“Sister Says They Can No Longer Afford Gas”: Woman Begs Bro To Use His Electric Car, Gets A No
It’s incredible – how many times have all sorts of wise people said that you should not mock others, if only because then a situation may inevitably arise when you need something that you previously mocked? Hundreds of books, thousands of stories and fables are devoted to this topic – and still, generations change, and in each there are always people who again step on this very rake.
For example, like the younger sister of the user u/Impossible_Ad1842, the hero of this story of ours, who, for almost a year and a half, from the moment the man bought himself an electric car, mocked her brother’s decision until… it turned out that her gas bills were too hefty for her to afford a SUV. However, let’s talk about everything in order.
The author of the post has a younger sister who’s married and delivered a baby recently

The couple has two huge SUVs, while the author owns a small electric car

Since the very moment the guy bought his car, the sister and BIL had been mocking him and his vehicle

But then one fine day the woman asked to borrow the author’s car, as they can no longer afford gas for their SUVs

The man refused without hesitation, remembering all the jokes and puns towards him, while his mom asked him to agree
So, the Original Poster (OP), according to him, is the eldest son in the family, and he has two younger sisters. The middle child is 30 Y.O., she is married, and recently a baby was born in their family. The couple owns two SUVs, although the author of the post, as he himself admits, never understood why a family of two adults and a baby, where both parents work from home, needs two huge vehicles with seven seats each.
However, to the OP’s credit, he never voiced his questions out loud – unlike his sister and her husband. About a year and a half ago, the author bought himself an electric Audi, and since then, every meeting with his sister and BIL was rarely without jokes and puns directed at him and his vehicle.
The subject of jokes was the electric car itself, its small size compared to a SUV, and, as the sister stated, security in his masculinity, and so on, and so on… However, the man bore the ridicule quite calmly – fortunately, he truly believed that an electric car was a great investment.
And then, one fine day, the sister turned to him with an unexpected request. According to the woman, she and her husband can no longer afford gas for their two SUVs, so she would appreciate it if he would let them use his electric car from time to time. Of course, the spouses would be obliged to take care of the vehicle and charge it at their own expense… but the OP answered negatively. And here’s why.
The guy, as he himself says, could easily lend them his car – especially since he also works from home, there are several grocery stores nearby, and he willingly uses the bus. But the author of the post sincerely believes that months of ridicule must be paid for, and in this case the payment will be the refusal of the sister’s request.
The original poster’s mother thinks he is wrong and should agree, but his youngest sister expressed her massive support, demanding that her brother be left alone. However, as the OP admits, the younger sister does not drive, so she cannot fully assess this situation. So the guy decided to seek advice and support online.

“To be honest, I understand this man perfectly and, although I don’t drive a car myself, I still share his decision,” says Irina Matveeva, a psychologist and certified NLP specialist, whom Bored Panda asked for a comment over this case. “After all, if his sister wanted his brother to lend her his car, why didn’t she start with an apology for the plentiful ridicule? At least with a formal apology, just to show that she realized that she was wrong.”
“But no one did this – neither the woman nor her husband. You know, this behavior is common among young children when they do various pranks just to see how far they can go in their bad behavior, to ‘test’ the boundaries of parents’ patience. And the behavior of this adult woman is somewhat similar. After all, if they cannot afford to maintain two SUVs, there is always the opportunity to sell at least one for good money,” Irina summarizes.
The vast majority of people in the comments to the original post also completely agree with the author, and also share the expert’s point of view. In the end, according to many commenters, the money from the possible sale of one SUV can pay for gas for a second one for a long time. “If they can’t afford to drive two SUVs, they should sell one. Problem solved,” one of the commenters wrote.
And also, according to commenters, the sister does not so much want to make a wise and balanced decision, but escape from some of the consequences of her previous poor choices at the expense of her older brother. And this desire, as some commenters believe, reveals her to be an extremely immature person, even if she’s married and has a kid herself. “You are under no obligation to provide a fix for her choices,” some person aptly noted in the comments.
Well, our siblings and close relatives often try to take advantage of us to solve their own problems, both in childhood and in adulthood. Another example of such a story is this recent post of ours, about an elder brother who actually wanted to make his parents or siblings pay for him, going back in forth while arranging a family vacation. And we are almost sure that you also have similar examples – so please feel free to share your own tales in the comments below this post as well.
However, the common opinion online is that the author is right in his decision, while his sister looks very immature here
She can sell one of her SUVs and buy an EV or an economy car. This sounds like a bunch of wealthy people complaining about money, the irony is palpable. They probably have 100k in vehicles sitting in their driveway but they can't afford gas?
10 bucks says they’re upside down on the gigantic gas hogs, and would have to pay someone to take them off their hands…
Load More Replies...My mom always said, never lend anything you can’t afford to lose, and never borrow anything you can’t afford to replace. I don’t think the younger sister could afford to replace your car immediately.
The feeling of entitlement is ridiculous! My grandparents went into the nursing home and my cousin asked if he could "borrow" my grandfather's small pickup occasionally to save on gas (since it wasn't being used anyway). He and his current wife both had huge gas guzzler SUVs and didn't like paying the gas on them. My grandfather would NEVER tell a grandchild no so he agreed My cousin basically took it home and used it all the time - while the insurance was coming out of my grandparent's social security every month!
Or a fuel efficient car that uses gasoline (I'm not opposed to electric cars; just wanted to make the point that they aren't the only alternative here).
Load More Replies...Her other option is to sell AT LEAST ONE of the SUVs and learn to live within their means.
From the 90's on IMO. Borrow 100% or more to buy a house. Same or close enough for two vehicles. Then buy a boat or a couple of quads / dirt bikes.... and holy c**p are you running pay cheque to pay check .
Load More Replies...Why do that when she can just take advantage of her brother and run down the resale value of his vehicle instead?
Load More Replies...She is 30 years old, married with a child. Her and her husband need to figure their own c**p out. Way past time to start adulting and stop using other family members because you want to have it your way fgs.
One of my friends was essentially told that she and her husband had to figure out how to buy her a new car and that now that she was married her dad wasn't shelling out for one. To me, this was rather odd that she even asked but it's good that he clarified things from the start.
Load More Replies...Electric cars have nothing to do with saving the planet. It's for saving the automotive industry. They pass the costs of destroying our planet onto us and then profit from it.
So, as someone who takes the bus, do you advocate for expanding public transport? That WILL improve the environment without kissing car manufacturers’ asses, but too few people are really interested.
Load More Replies...Her "masculine" SUV driving husband can sell his oversized ego vehicle and buy an electric one.
Have him by a Ford Lightning and then add the aftermarket testicles to it and he'll be fine. :-D
Load More Replies...They could "gasp" trade in their cars for electric ones one just one to share. Honestly they abusing the Audi. Adding miles decreases the value. And what about tires and general maintenance for it? All your problem. They need to stop and you have to stop letting them. Tell them you will be going out an need the car. Then just hang around and say your plans were canceled if they ask.
I have a couple of questions about electric cars that maybe someone can answer. Please understand that I don't have an agenda with them. They are only requests for information. #1. Are they less expensive to operate than a fuel efficient vehicle that uses gasoline? I know you don't have to buy gas, but electricity isn't free either. #2. Are they better for the environment? I know the cars themselves are, but the more of them that are on the road, the more electricity needs to be generated. Is electricity generation better for the environment than the exhaust from gasoline and diesel engines?
#1 - in many cases, yes. But it depends on what your electricity costs in your area, and what car you are comparing to. If you can charge at home the answer is almost always yes, because your home rate of electricity should be fairly cheap, and cheaper than filling with gas. But you can't compare say a Hummer EV with a gas Prius and pretend that comparison makes sense. #2 - Yes. Many studies have shown that it only takes about 40-50K miles of use before an EV is better for the environment than any comparable gas car, and that's even in areas where the electric grid is the most polluted. So, given that most cars last well more than 100K miles (usually more like 200K miles), EVs are much better for the environment than gas cars.
Load More Replies...We don’t drive in SF (part-time home), so our car sits in our driveway. It’s available if my mom needs it. We live off-grid on an island most of the year, so need a truck bed. Anytime we need to run to do shopping it’s an hour RT. Monthly, we have to go to the other side of the island for shopping and it’s a full day trip there & back. Our issue was finding an EV or fuel efficient vehicle that has the range and could actually charge given our location. Also, many cars aren’t sold on-island, particularly direct sales. So, we bent a few rules. We ordered the Rivian R1T to our Cali address then paid to have it shipped transpacific. It wasn’t our first car we’ve moved on/island, so we knew the drill. The issue was our charging station. We have solar & residential wind turbine. In order to power the charging station, we had to dedicate the turbine to the charging station. Ideally we’d like to do a full-roof solar like Tesla does. EV is the way to go!
Was just behind a Rivian on my way home today; how do you like it?
Load More Replies...I wouldn't let them borrow it. I DO wish however the motor industry would make smaller SUV vehicles again because as the OP said 6 and 7 seater SUV and an 2 adults and an infant. They seem to think everyone who needs or desires a SUV needs that many seats.
Lots of smaller or mid-sized SUV or 'crossover' type vehicles available in Europe, so it's not so much the industry per se, but market forces. Of course the industry is happy to make and sell bigger more expensive vehicles than necessary, but it's people like the OP's sister with not one but two oversized monsters that keeps the status quo going.
Load More Replies...There are not adequate words in human language for how much NTA or how hard and utterly that entitled twat can go F herself. There is no way on earth I would EVER let them use my car. And the pestering and entitled nature of it are just the icing on the terrible person cake.
It never fails to amaze me how other family members come out of the woodwork to tell you how unreasonable you are being for not letting another family member use you. At the same time, they won't let the family member use them. So…?
What is it with people thinking they are entitled to the fruits of someone else's labor. I never let anyone borrow my vehicle or anything else I own, your desires are not my responsibility.
Both my sister and my brother borrow my car, and I hate it. I work from home these days and now im saving so much mileage on my hoopdee, just elongating its life spand. then these two that keep wreckingcars, or cant affrod to buy one keep using mine. And since im the oldest and I cant help but take care of them since our parents are out of the picture. its exsuating. Just keep a job and get your own car. I am not made of money. Sorry im basically just venting. have a nice day lol. This article just trigged some outburst in me...
Rights and wrongs of vehicles be they diesel, petrol, electric or fairy dust powered is irrelevant. If you want to use a vehicle then rent, lease or buy your own, then tax, test and insure it, it is what I did, I chose the car I could afford to buy and run, it’s mine, that’s why it’s staying on my drive next to my flat. If I trash it or damage it then that’s my problem, if you were to do that it’s still my problem and I’m in no place to keep fuelling or fixing what you damage.
I suspect that they owe too much on the SUVs to make selling them worthwhile. But OP should not loan their car - the insurance could be a problem, there’s mileage and general baby mess. The sister is an adult and needs to figure it out. If the parents want her to drive an electric car, they can provide one.
