If you've noticed your bar of Toblerone looking rather small and a far cry from how you remember it in your childhood, rest assured, you’re not the only one. In fact, consumers around the world are increasingly paying more for a growing range of products in ways that don’t show up on receipts.

Think of shrunk portions, thinner rolls, lighter bags, smaller cans — in this way, companies try to offset rising labor and materials costs without scaring us all off. But are they really succeeding? Also known as shrinkflation, the phenomenon has surely been noticed and well documented by people don’t find it fair to pay the same for a lesser net weight.

One such online destination, a subreddit called “Shrinkflation,” is dedicated to sharing some of the most deliberate and annoying examples of paying more for less spotted in practice. Below we wrapped up a collection of posts from there.

Shrinkflation is a form of retail camouflage in which consumers pay more for a growing range of products without actually realizing it. By shrinking usual product sizes and net weight, companies and businesses aim to cover rising labor and material costs without increasing the prices.

According to Edgar Dworsky, a consumer advocate and lawyer who has authored a number of consumer protection laws, including the regulations under which the Massachusetts Lemon Law operates, consumers check the price every time they buy, but they don’t check the net weight. Dworsky has been tracking shrinkflation for more than 30 years, and he shares the results on his website Consumer World.

that's bad example, don't look at how big the bag is, look at net weight of stuff inside. so much air is needed so the chips won't break during transport.

You can't always get the last amount of oil out of the can before the pressure has gone. Leaving oil in the can that's thrown away. My experience has told me that the smaller cans (100ml) are the worse for this. I went through a phase of opening up the "empty" cans to see how much was left. Maybe I should have formalized the results and publicized them for widespread comparison. https://www.facebook.com/739827619/videos/3134983986753041/

“When the price of raw materials, like coffee beans or paper pulp goes up, manufacturers are faced with a choice: Do we raise the price knowing consumers will see it and grumble about it? Or do we give them a little bit less and accomplish the same thing? Often it’s easier to do the latter,” Dworsky told The Washington Post.

Dworsky also argues that when small bags of candy have been downsized, you are not likely to eat two bags instead. "But for orange juice, cereal, paper towels, toilet paper, peanut butter, whatever — consumers just have to buy it more often."

Although products don’t shrink by half and the changes are usually barely noticeable, these little differences add up to your pocketbook. If you're getting 10% to 12% less of a product, that's equivalent to a 10% price increase, and if you’re a regular consumer of that product, you will start feeling the difference pretty soon.

On the other hand, we can try to see the positive side of shrinkflation and argue that we may indeed be saving some calories. In the context of the obesity pandemic, this may be a small but important step. When six-packs of bagels go from 24 oz to 22 to 20 oz, the chances are you will still be buying the same number of packages but end up eating a lesser amount of food.

Royal canin is one of the most tested pet foods, which is why it is expensive. It has everything your pet needs. Recently, there was a grain-free craze where people were putting their dogs on random brand grain-free diets because they thought dogs didn't need grains, or had allergies. Many dogs ended up with severe heart disease because of this. These foods were NOT extensively tested for safety and to ensure they had all the nutrients your dog needs. This has never happened with a RC food and never will, because the company ensures their food is complete nutrition to protect your pet's health. I'm not sure what ingredients you think are "c**p" in them, but they are everything your pet needs to stay healthy.

I bought that for my cat on a vet reco. My cat wouldn't touch it. They reimbursed me for the entire cost and told me to just donate the food to a pet shelter. So, not a total loss, but definitely sticker shock.

The actual reason for the change in volume of food for Royal Canin was can availability. The reduction in volume wasn't the goal, though yes, it would be nice if they would reduce the price in accordance with the reduced volume. I'm a vet, I called and asked about it around 2 years ago. There was a big shortage of their canned food (at least certain types) for several months, then some types started to come back but were in a different shape can. Since supply chain issues have not really improved, I imagine they are just happy they have a can supplier at all and aren't going to risk going back to the original cans any time soon.

I’m a veterinary technician and I personally and professionally vouch for RC. This particular food is made to keep the pH of the cat’s urine at a correct point as to prevent them from forming urinary crystals (struvite and calcium oxalate). These crystals can cause cats major discomfort and (mainly in males) can cause the urethra to obstruct. This prevents the cat from being able to pass urine and is a life threatening emergency that is very traumatic and costly. Have 2 of my own cats that this is the only food I would feed. They have proven that other diets will not keep the crystals at bay. One of my males did have an obstruction; got through it though. Another cat I have eats strictly RC Ultamino due to severe food intolerance/IBD. He would be dead if not for RC’s Rx diet. Don’t get me wrong though; the price kills me.

Dr. Lisa Pierson has a recipe for home-made catfood which (using bone-in chicken thighs (another uses rabbit if you can source it) and is cooked enough to kill bacteria,. Adds in taurine, fish oil, egg yolk, chicken liver (or beef in a different ratio if you cant get chicken liver), vitamin e & b complex. Receipe can be found at catinfo.org, she also helped with the feline diabetes forum nutrition section - a cat's diet contributes so much to their health, and generally any wet (canned) food will be nmbetter for their kidneys than dry, but the less unnecessay ingredients, the better.

And for everyone claiming this is good food that "the doctor ordered", it has “animal by-products, cereals, oils and fats, vegetable protein extracts, vegetable by-products, minerals, sugar”. So meat LEFTOVERS (by-product is skin, bones, horn and hooves), cereal and even more added sugar… for dogs, who are not only carnivores, and should have herbal food added in only minor percent, but for a sickly dog at that! Compare it with for example (not gonna give you brand name): “46.6% broth, 22% beef hearts and lungs, 20% chicken hearts and fat, 10% potatoes, 1% minerals, 0.5% salmon oil, 0.1% potassium citrate (Protein source: beef, chicken)” – food that gives you exactly the list of products they used, and you can see it’s not minced bones. If you don’t question so called authorities this is what you get.

It gets even worse when the 5.5 oz is sold out but they have the 3 oz. The 5.5 oz of even the Chewy Brand (American Journey) is about half the price of the Wellness at $31/24 pack (sold out since December) but the 3 oz pack of American Journey is a whopping savings of approx. $4 at $27.08 for 24 cans (this is also never sold out because it's a ripoff)

Those I know for a fact are two separate products, I work for a vet and we get both in, the large ones aren't discontinued you just have a choice in size. This shrinkage is a real thing, less than half the examples on here are not examples of shrinkage but dumb shoppers.

This is incorrect. You're thinking of the 3 oz cans which are not in this photo and are still an option. However the 5.8 oz cans shown in this photo were indeed replaced by 5.1 oz cans which are also shown in this photo. For those who don't know, pet food manufacturers were impacted by shortages and supply chain issues during the pandemic.

I'm not a vet, I did extensive research on phosphorus content to preempt my adopted elderly cat's renal issues. RC is one of the only brands (apart from Hills) with lower phosphorus, and is one of the only brands suited for pets with kidney problems and other medical problems. I'm not saying its the best ever, but there is hardly any competition here in Australia (apart from Hills, which is pretty much the same as RC). I'd like you to state your research if you think RC is trash. It is literally life saving for some pets.

Yup. BW3 changed that a long time ago. You used to get a dozen wings for a certain price. Now you only get 10 wings, unless you pay quite a bit more, and then you get 15. You cannot buy a dozen wings anymore. So, I no longer patronize BW3. Those with a local business have much better deals and I prefer to see them succeed. Not my job to fund the stock payers of large corporate-owned businesses.

They have been doing a lot of these things lately. In 2019 Coke decided from one second to the next, that 500ml bottles now had a filling of 450ml for the same price of course. Didn't fly so well with the biggest grocery chains in Switzerland. They decided to boycott those products and Coke got kicked out of the stores. Later they actively circumvented the general importer and bought coke directly from Poland, where sizes were not yet changed. Same happened to some other big companys like Nestlé... The companies negotiated and now we're back to 500ml bottles. So boycott works, but only if the big stores help. Most people don't realize the problem bc the changes are not that easy to spot when shopping.

It's true; the holes are for even cooking like donuts. And the holes aren't made with a hole punch that recycles the dough back. They're needles that smoosh the dough away a little. *I'm talking about the major brands in the US though, no idea how it might be in, say, China.

You are comparing boards with different specifications. The 1920 is sawn timber (50 mm), 1960 is levelled (48 mm) and the 2019 is planed timber (45 mm). Those specifications existed one hundred years ago and are still available today, and there is a difference of 5 mm from the "biggest" to the "smallest", and it's allways been like this. Most "hobby carpenters" can only get hold of levelled or planed boards.

Well, if you trust the Italians with beer making you just get what you deserve! German, Dutch, British, to name but a few.

I've noticed this one. Every so often the 32 Oz. will pop up and I try to get them when I can.

🧐Lemme check... I have one in my pantry bought yesterday... edit: nope, ours are still 250g packages 🤔 and it seems the two packages here are not the same thing. One has the biscuit inside in a row, the other one has each biscuit seperatly packaged. We need to compare same things not two different versions.

So I was right! I asked my husband the other day, if he too thought something was wrong with the ice cream I bought. I had the feeling the container had less volume. But of course the price was the same! 🤬
