The group of 7 best friends decided to retire together and here’s how they made it happen
It all started as a joke among this group of friends, because who could have the guts and even resources to attempt retirement planning of this scale? But as it turns out, these women have exactly what it takes. After one of them found a 700 square meter house in the suburbs of Guangzhou, their plans of living together have been put into action.
They have known each other for more than two decades. These closer-than-siblings friends have been thinking about spending the last days of their lives together for over a decade. “We [said that we] would get together when we were 60 and find a place to retire,” one of them told Yitiao.
What could have forever stayed just a dream was turned into reality last year once the group put together 4 million yuan ($580,000) and bought the house.
The abandoned redbrick house was swiftly turned into a beautiful modern mansion by clever home renovation. The three and a half story estate surrounded by beautiful hills, forests, and a garden promised these young women a calm retirement with a companionship of life-long friends.
The retirement home features shared space on the ground floor and separate bedrooms for each of them on the upper floor. The furnishing reveals an excellent taste for interiors, with most of the furniture imported from India and Morocco.
All of the women share a love for tea, so it was a no-brainer for them that their house must include a lovely tea pavilion that is connected to the house via a wooden boardwalk.
While the house is rather secluded, located an hour away from the nearest town, women aren’t going to feel lonely and will make sure to keep themselves occupied. “We’ll probably cook together, barbecue in the fields, sing and collect food in the village,” the friends say in the video. “We joke that each of us should practice one skill so that we won’t be lonely and fight with each other ten years later… Some can cook beautiful food, some know traditional Chinese medicine, some play instruments, and some grow vegetables.”

Share on FacebookI'm not afraid to admit it - I'm totally jealous. Not of the house in particular, but that sounds like such a wonderful way to live - in an intentional community.
Yes, I recently bought what will be my retirement home and it only has room for me and two cats! I hope I don't get too lonely!
Load More Replies...Wait, what happens if they get partners in the meantime. Will they move in too or will they leave the partner to move in with the friends?
Lowkey, I've wanted to do this with my friends for a while. When you find people you feel that close to? Hell yeah. Oh, and there'd be little cats around the place too
They must be some of China's elite to afford almost $100,000 each. Love the garden on the top tier. Beautiful setting.
Nah. You're probably not up to date with Guangzhou real estate market in the past 10-15 years. Apartments in the city often cost more than this...sometimes even double!
Load More Replies...They each have their own private space. I'm sure they will be alright
Load More Replies...The house is beautifully remodeled and it is very hard to come by a relationships such as them. God bless. Even with own bloodline sisters and brothers are sometimes hard to reach an agreement to buy one house what's with living together. And the financial conflict may arise later on.
I love this idea it's like choosing a place where you and your loved ones and grow old together
The Chinese people, being in the most populous country, are more socially and community oriented. While most of my friends in the US are still working hard, my high school friends back in China are most retired and are playing mahjong together, traveling together, dancing together regardless of their social levels. I think in general they look happier despite their living conditions and problems, etc.
I'm assuming it because they had to fix it up, but I agree. My sister just bought a three bedroom where they live and they're paying 300k.
Load More Replies...This will be more common in the future as prices go up and incomes go down.
Would be nice to have that money at that age, where is it coming from?, daddy i guess.
When he was a kitten, Dougy used to join me at the computer and do this... dougy-at-t...8cb4db.jpg
I hope it has LOTS of bathrooms. I wouldn't want to share a house with 6 other women unless we each had our own bathroom! Can you imagine how much use it gets during that time of the month, you know they are all going to sync up.
They're not living there now, it's for their retirement. It would be safe to say they would have all gone through menopause by that time.
