As all humanity, we have to make significant changes in our daily routine. We have entered a period in which we have to drop many of our habits that we’ve acquired throughout our entire lives and most importantly, give up most of our social life. Now, all humanity has a common invisible enemy, regardless of religion, language or race. This enemy is called COVID-19 and known to us as coronavirus, has surrounded us both physically and mentally.

It is difficult for all of us to witness such a big, sad event in human history. We all do our best to be aware of the reality of this situation we are in and try to cope with it. But even if we take all the precautions physically, the fact that everyone is talking about coronavirus with fear affects us psychologically. Even if you are staying in an environment where you are completely safe from the virus, because of the content of this communication, you can have the psychological side effects of this disease.

Coronavirus causes us to make changes in all the activities we do throughout the day. Our daily routine and healthy habits are one of the most important factors that strengthen our mental health and keep us alive throughout the day. To leave your home, which is at the top of this daily routine list, is also at the top of the measures taken against the corona virus spread and we have to quarantine ourselves. Therefore, people whose routine is disrupted from the very beginning have a hard time maintaining their mental health. Due to this epidemic of corona virus, we protect ourselves and others by putting social distance between us and we have to reduce the contact to zero with other people. The isolation we experience with this social distance disconnects us from nature and creates a situtation that requires us to hinder our most basic insticts.

Besides being a social being, humans are always hungry to explore, observe and be in touch with nature. However, modern human has a weapon to fight with this hunger. In the 21st century, where our lives merged with internet and technology, exploring, observing and being in touch with nature have been carried to a different dimension for us. It is possible to carry out all these actions within the “virtual world” created by humanity using science and technology.

In addition to the pleasure of discovering something new, it is also possible to restore the daily routine and perform the same activities we do outside, within our home in this virtual world. The screens of mobile phones, tablets, laptops and smart TVs are able to transfer high resolution images. This is a technology which succeeds in reflecting the environments we desire to see or are accustomed to seeing.

Although our eyes are an easily deceived organ, our ears are much more developed and sharp. We have enough technology to give our ears, which are more successful in distinguishing the truth from artificial, with a sense of reality within this virtual world. Since the quality of the sounds we hear is directly proportional to the way that the sounds is recorded, we can fully experience this sense of reality when we listen to natural sounds recorded using correct and high-quality equipment, using over-ear or in-ear headphones.

The experience offered to us in this virtual world, which we have reached through current technology, is at a level to compensate for the freedom we have temporarily lost in isolation in order to protect ourself and others against the coronavirus epidemic. In order to stay with nature without leaving our comfort zone, it will be sufficient to listen to the sounds of natural environment and watch the images suitable for these sounds.

In these days of isolation, we have to break our daily routine and stay away from nature even fore a temporary period. We should be able to protect our mental health as well as the measures we take to protect our physical health. We can continue our activities at home by listening to the sounds of natural environment and watching the images accompanying these sounds.

You can sit by a lake and feel immersed in the landscape while the surrounding nature life envelops you. You can listen to the seagulls accompanying the sounds of the waves as you watch the waves of the ocean hitting the shore. You can isolate yourself from the outside world and soothe your mind by listening to the joyful environment sitting on the river bank, where the sound flowing water mixes with birds chirping.

Meeting with the natural environment you miss in the virtual world and sharing your experiences with others will reduce the bad effects of social distancing.

My name is Violeta and I am an editor here at Bored Panda. I love reading memes for a living. It’s obviously much more than that, but I appreciate the variety of topics, information, and pics I get to see every day and share with the world! Those funny memes really make my day too. Being born in the ’90s in post-Soviet Lithuania speaks more about me than I’d like to admit. I’m still learning about the world and myself, but I do love my friends, traveling, art, and my cat. My favorite fact to share about myself is that I used to hide meatballs in my friend’s pockets at lunch so I could go play outside. I wish all those meatballs could find their way back to me someday.
