I first heard about The Mr Mo Project when I photographed an adoptable blind senior bulldog named Bella from the Newark Humane Society. I didn’t have much hope for her because I know all too well how overcrowded inner city shelters are (just take a peek at my 25 Reasons to Adopt to see why). So when I heard that a rescue group pulled her, I had to find out more about this group, The Mr Mo Project.
I loved what they did – not only pulling senior dogs from shelters but also covering all their medical expenses for the rest of their lives. Many people don’t want to adopt senior dogs because of those expenses, so without that burden, many more “forever foster homes” opened up. These forever fosters still have to be strong enough to handle the emotional end of life journey of a companion they have bonded strongly with.
After looking a little closer at the group, I was thrilled when I realized they were based in Saratoga Springs, New York. My husband and I were living in New Jersey at the time but always planned on moving back home at some point – and home for us is in Saratoga. I wanted to feature what they did using the best way I knew how – through photographs. So when we finally did move back to the area I got in touch with Mariesa about a photographic series and she was thrilled. The local foster families jumped on board and here are the results! To donate to the project so they can continue to save and support senior dogs, go here.
