Bullying leads to pain, sorrow, and can even make people lose their will to live. A heartbreaking video is going viral and it once again brought the topic of bullying to the forefront of most people’s minds.

In the video filmed by his mother Yarraka Bayles, 9-year-old Quaden cries and says he wants to take his own life because he gets bullied over having Achondroplasia, a form of Dwarfism, every single day.

The video even spurred some celebrities to lend Quaden a helping hand, including comedian Brad Williams who also has Dwarfism: he raised over 175k Australian dollars (and counting) to send the child and his mother to Disneyland in California. You can support the GoFundMe campaign right here. Bored Panda spoke with Dr. Tracy Vaillancourt from the University of Ottawa, an expert in children’s mental health and violence prevention, about Quaden’s case. Scroll down for the full interview.

We must warn you, Yarraka’s video of Quaden is very emotional and you should watch it at your discretion.

According to Dr. Vaillancourt, “The situation is now fairly unique because of the tremendous outpouring of support Quaden has received.”

“I am happy to see this reaction and I believe that Quaden and his mother will benefit from knowing that there are many people in their corner,” she told Bored Panda.

The professor added: “What is also needed, however, is the children and educators in Quaden’s immediate environment to also show their support for him and other children who are being bullied.”

Dr. Vaillancourt pointed out that those people who believe that Quaden might have an anger issue are mistaken. “The people who think Quaden has an anger issue are pathologizing a normal reaction to bullying, and this is wrong. When children and adults are bullied they either get mad or they get sad. Protesting poor treatment by peers is appropriate.”

You can watch the full emotional video right here

“What is not appropriate is watching someone get bullied and doing nothing about it. Quaden’s reaction may seem extreme in isolation, but against the backdrop of being tormented for years, it makes sense. In fact, his reaction is one that I have seen far too often,” the expert explained.

“There is evidence that some targets of bullying go on to be perpetrators of bullying. We published a longitudinal study of children and youth showing this (Haltigan and Vaillancourt, 2014). The way to resolve this cycle of abuse is to prioritize the reduction of bullying. This requires a cultural shift in which bystanders actively dissuade the abuse of power,” Vaillancourt said.

She also noted that being the target of bullying is “so hurtful” that people will “try anything” to avoid this type of abuse.”

“But herein lies the problem. It’s not targets of bullying who need to change, it perpetrators. Indeed, every child has a fundamental, democratic right to be spared from abuse and humiliation.”

Australia’s National Rugby League invited Quaden to lead out the Indigenous team before the All Stars game against the Maori team.

Yarraka and Quaden both live in Brisbane in Australia. The 9-year-old’s mother was so desperate for help that she uploaded a video of her son at his low-point on Facebook. The video has over 17 million views at the time of writing and it raised the issue of what the devastating effects of bullying are.

“I’ve just picked my son up from school, witnessed a bullying episode, rang the principal, and I want people to know—parents, educators, teachers—this is the effect that bullying has,” the boy’s mother said in the video. Meanwhile, Quaden talked about taking his own life in the video because he couldn’t stand the amount of bullying he received at school. According to his mother, he has tried to take his own life before.

While most people sent their love and support to the boy and his mother, some internet users were skeptical and wondered whether Quaden has anger issues, perhaps, as a result of being bullied.

Bullying is awful, yes. This kid may have bigger problems than bullies. His mom films him instead of hugging him and teaching him to ignore bullies. And the gun pic?!?!

Telling your child to ignore bullies never works. She has hugged him, she has gone to see teachers, she has spoken to parents, and nothing has worked before she did this.

This is so heartbreaking. Teen suicide is at record highs even though schools claim they have anti bullying policies and supposedly have zero tolerance. Schools can only do so much because of all the red tape and rules etc but it’s getting beyond a joke. My daughter was having severe suicidal thoughts last year and even started cutting because of bullying. She had someone telling her to do everyone a favour and go kill yourself, I wish you mum and dad killed themselves and you jump off head first into the concrete and die etc. We went to the police to make a report and there is no actual law where I live against someone telling someone else to go kill themselves. Bullies need to be held accountable and if they are responsible for a suicide they should be charged with manslaughter at the least. Parents also need to show a better example and speak to their kids.

So sorry to read your story. Hope she is feeling better about herself now, I can understand the depression it causes and sometimes the future looks bleak. But - bullies are ultimately cowards, your daughter is not. Hope the sun is shining now in your lives.

This should not be posted by his mother and frankly I think Board Panda should avoid picking stuff up like this. Especially not with his name. I think that is irresponsible. This will haunt this kid into adulthood.

Bored Panda should avoid picking stuff up like this, and worse, the stories of people who crave attention of the world and post "Poor me" accounts about their "suffering", but BP will pick up stories like that, because, believe it or not, many, many people enjoy seeing others in pain and distress, it just makes their day, of course nobody will admit it. But think about how popular violent shows and films are.

If this is fake..shame on the parents and the people that supported it. If it's true..there needs to be better laws in place to protect these kids and give them the ability to bring charges up against their attackers. I know there is a freedom of speech thing, but it doesn't apply to harassment and hate crimes. People with medical and mental conditions need to be protected from these bullies. Sometimes creating laws that take away the attackers money and freedoms are the only way to get through to them that their behavior is not acceptable.

This is terrible. I have two boys just a little older than him and if I found out they were bullying kids I'd put some kinda fear in them. At the end of the video the kid threatened to kill his bully, and the mother did some threatening too. And I also see the kid posing with a gun. Makes me suspicious.

If my son was being bullied at school every day, the hell would I keep him in the school! I would either home school him or find some kind of alternative. Yes it's heartbreaking but the solution is not to post a video of your traumatised child online for attention. People all over the world suffer from bullying, it's not just her son going through this.

I am 63 years old, my school life was horrible. Mine was an mental disorder. Hyperactive, couldn't stand the noise and, for me the confusion of school. Always told I had a high intelligence and was just spoiled and lazy. Cried every day before and during school. Difficulty learning. I was bullied by the kids daily. Followed walking home from school. Parents loved me but didn't address the issue. Went to psychologist etc, only my behavior was addressed. At 8 years old I would lay in bed at night thinking if I concentrate hard enough I could stop my heart. By 17 I quit school and was agoraphobic. Had a suicide plan. Then my dad and sister got cancer and I felt I had to stay for my mom to help. They both died within months of each other. I stayed for mom. Those kids and the non responsive school system made a life that was already difficult, almost impossible. How many kids have to die before bullying is addressed. Not just once a year at an assembly but daily with severe consequen

People on here saying that this video is just going to make the kid more humiliated, no it's not. It's going to show people that there are much bigger affects to their actions than they realize. I agree with this mom. This whole anti bullying s**t is doing nothing. Telling kids that they need to say sorry and be nice is not doing ANYTHING. They. Don't. Care. My 6 year old son is bullied every day for the way he looks. Yes, he does need to learn that not everyone is going to be his best friend, I completely agree with that. BUT that also does not mean ignoring the bullies and doing nothing about it. Kids like Quaden are suffering so much that they are threatening to kill the selves and y'all think that the solution to that is to just ignore it and give him a hug? No. Because now that bully is just going to find another victim. Pathetic.

    1. In Australia there is only one public school you can go to based on where you live. To go to another school it's typically expensive as it's private, and typically impossible if your child has a disability because it requires a lot more services and costs to be provided for the disabled child. 2. So only influencers can create an imaginary happy/wealthy/gangster life to portray to the world? Seems normal to everyone else, why not him? 3. This boy has been threatening suicide from the age of 6, a mother has been desperately trying to save him from bullies and depression finally recorded the frightening things her child says and posts them online is humiliating him? No he has been humiliated by bullies his whole life and she is trying to take control back. Well done it worked!!!!

Considering the fact that I am also feeling suicidal and that I also feel horrible for the kid, looking through the comments y’all are posting about the pictures, I realize that they, yes in fact, do seem f****d up. But, y’all have no idea if they were from years before or taken right before. So I wouldn’t maybe make the kid feel worse and put more s****y thoughts in his head that he ain’t good enough. I may only be 14 but I’m old enough to know that all your actions toward those is unnecessarily inappropriate. Remember this for the future when the same thing or something relatively close in situation pops up. Good day

It's because todays parents think their spawn is infallible and invulnerable! Their kids are the ultimate and they are fighting every single little fight for them. They don't care about the bad behavior their kids have at school and if the teacher informs them about bullying behavior, the most you can expect from them is sanctions against the school, not their kids. A kid like the one in the video is just collateral damage. It pisses me off so much. If my kid would treat others like that, other kids, disabled, elderly people, I would show him/her what respect and integrity is, till it's burned-in in their silly brains! I teach this to my godchilds whenever it's needed and wouldn't tolerate bullying in any possible way. I hope the boy has the strength to overcome this traumas one day and the school is pushing consequences to the bullies. Poor little soul

STOP BLAMING SCHOOLS. They do try their best to minimise bullying (teacher of 15 years). We are not heartless monsters who turn a blind eye to every bullying incident. In my opinion, it is a complex and case by case issue. Some kids just do not have the emotional resilience to handle the inevitable downfalls we face in life (is that our job to teach them? If so, which subjects do we remove from the curriculum to do so?). Some kids bring the bullies home with them on their devices (is it our job to ensure they know how to safely use them, or the person who bought it for them?). Some kids are trapped in a system that try's to integrate them into a class full of peers who are at a reading/writing/developmental age of ten years above theirs (would you be happy for us to take time away from your child's learning to help them?). Some kids have been taught that they aren't kids, they're young adults, that they deserve respect without earning it and that they are always right. Is it?

I suffered from very harsh bullying at school from teachers & students, I come from a family of psychopaths where abuse was the norm, I am not a bully, I am schizophrenic & bi polar , & other mental illnesses, I am under a psychiatrist now for 15 years & have two boys who have suffered under a mother who had no clue how to be a mum. They are seeing mental health experts, & have & are learning to deal with their issues. My abuse of them wasn't extreme, but enough that they were scared sometimes in the past of me. I am fortunate that I am able to own up to, & continue to be a supportive loving & caring mum. Both my boys see mental health experts who address their issues as I cannot. We love each other, we join each other around the dinner table to "break bread", to speak to each other without fear, which sometimes they felt during the episodes I suffered. Many of my son's friends & my husband's family as he as well have seen the change in me. My boys are the world to me

my youngest has autism & delayed learning skills, as he wasn't high on the spectrum I put him in a "normal" school, without telling me he was bullied from prep, in year 8, he told me I want to kill myself then it will be all better, he was already seeing a speech pathologist but wouldn't discuss this with her, I was able to have him see a physiologist, it was a slow recovery for him, thankfully I was able to place him in a school with parents, children & teachers who were so supportive. Everyday I would ask him how did it go today? there were a few issues that ironed out, eventually he told me I didn't have to ask him anymore & would tell me if there were. I cried when the school accepted him, today he is 22 nearly 23 & is a chef in a classy restaurant, he still had bulling issues at work, but his father, myself, his brother older than him & his psychologist encouraged him to walk away from that, he had a relaxing holiday at home with his family for 6 months.

The issue of bullying is real; it seems that most of it in school settings. School systems should be active in prevention; creating a strong message on a regular basis to the student body; even grade school, but especially Jr high and high school, are vicious societies. The impulse drive to pick on the weak or different, has been around, but it's always diabolical. If it is possible, safety measures and alarm methods could be developed; i.e. Patrol systems, alert wrist bands for victims (that have a signal button) I've seen posts that said this was a con set up by the mother; but it doesn't matter, bullying is real. The idea of sending vast amounts of money is confusing; it could turn a good kid into a power brat; but the attitude of wanting to help is great.

He is such a cutie. I am so sorry to see him so sad. People are animals. Quaden you are a handsome dude, don't let anyone tell you differently. You are all right, those bullies have no right to exist. Stay strong. 😄👍⭐ I think Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage has helped us all to view folks with dwarfism as simply part of normal life. I was in a nursing home for awhile, and my roommate was a dwarf. Merle was the most fun person, and I miss her terribly. We pretended we were princesses. I just do not like that photo with a gun. Take that ish down it is wildly inappropriate.

His classmates have spoken up now, his mom definitely is in it for the money. Apparently the kid bullies other kids and cries wolf when they stand up for themselves. I don't know.. this is fishy and I kinda hope they spend that 200k on something worthy..

I don't know if this is real or fake but I do know that bullying is a serious, heartbreaking issue. Bullies bully because they are emotionally hurting and their way to feel better is to hurt someone else. Hurt people hurt people. I believe the victims, as well as every human being, needs to be taught how to love themselves enough so when life hits them, they are not knocked down by it. We can not expect to be able to control what other people say about us. But we can learn to control our reaction to it! We can only control, to a certain extent, another ones behavior. Physical violence can be controlled in schools, but I think emotional abuse, or bullying, needs an entirely different approach. The pictures of this kid, with the gun etc. is sad. He should not be taught that he needs to change himself to fit in or to be accepted. That will weaken him. A bully will ALWAYS find something else to say about you regardless of what you try to change. LOVE YOURSELF! And to hell what others think

I feel for him, but I don't think this is the right response. Putting it all over social media for forced pity from strangers isn't going to help him. The kid needs actual therapy, and help and guidance into finding people who truly value him. It's alright if his mom posts nice pictures of him being "confident" but the gun one was over the top and a little questionable because violence on others is sometimes born from situations like this. Being bullied into social reclusion can go two ways; a person can become violent towards themselves or towards others. A gun shouldn't be put in his hands right now.

I know people who have dwarfism, some were bullied some were not, the key is how the school and the parents of the other children handle it. Anti-bullying laws and campaigns have zero effectiveness and do not work. Working with teachers and parents and holding bullies accountable is the only way. And this kid should know there are many great people with his condition and similar, actors like Brad Williams, Peter Dinklage (who actually has the same version of Dwarfism as this kid), Sport Stars like Rico Abreu of NASCAR (has a special modified car), muscians like Rap Pioneer Bushwick Bill, scientists like Charles Steinmetz who pioneered modern electricity and AC currents, even introduced Tesla to it (and Tesla admired Steinmetz as a visionary) and is responsible for most modern day electrical sciences. And so many other people. If people knew more about people with Dwarfism people would view them differently

The gun photo is from an app where you take a previous photo taken and photoshops your face onto premade photo layouts available. He isn't really holding a gun.

But the message is the same. At the end of the video he threatened to kill his bully and he himself is suicidal. So putting up a pic of him holding a gun, real or not, sends a terrible message.

No, the mother should not have posted a video of him crying, but that's not really the issue. The issue is that this 9 year old boy is being bullied over something that he has no control over.

Schools are denying that bullying is a problem and they simply refuse to take any action against bullies because of the bad PR it may get them. Teachers punish victims that are standing up against their bullies but at the same time turn a blind eye when they see that pupils are bullying one child. That's what creates schoolshooters.

Shame on both the mother for prarading her kid's trauma for the world to see.... and shame on every single teacher at that school who is clearly negligent. I know that teachers "can't be everywhere", but for this to go unnoticed, un-checked, and unresolved is inexcusable.

Some people have mental illnesses and other issues that make them “lack a sensitivity chip,” as Jennifer Anniston once said of Brad Pitt. They may not feel empathy when they see a child cry, and don’t forget there are also people with their own prejudices who love social media commenting. You just have to remember that. I am not saying everyone has to agree, but you can tell by what they say and the way they are saying it that these are the people who make fun of Blu Ivy’s looks like it’s their day job, and others just sound like they were bullies as kids. This kid deserves to be treated nicely. Every kid does, so who would criticize that online? I think you already know. The way they talk about it is like they are being scammed and they are just too smart for that, which is exactly what people who lack empathy say. Kindness is weakness. Sympathy/Empathy is being a sucker. Anyway, watching this video is a good psychopathy test. I wish this kid and mom all the best.

Take your child out of that school! Would you stay with your spouse if they were abusing your child every day, just because the abusive behavior is from other kids doesn't mean it's not abuse. Emotional abuse is extremely damaging especially for young children while they are still developing, this is literally changing his brain chemistry/personality and setting him up for lifelong problems with anxiety, depression, ptsd, low self esteem....unfortunately the damage has probably already been done.

Some people think he's actually 18. Or at the very least a good actor. It's not the first time a parent/person uses a disability to fool people to get free stuff and attention. For as sad as when these things actually happen, it's even sadder when people do these things just for attention and ruin the reputation of those who are actually struggling. Take everything, especially videos like these, with a grain of salt. Google search "Is Quaden Bayles 18", do your own research. Form your own opinion. 18 or not, this appears to be a scam. https://nypost.com/2020/02/21/quaden-bayles-internet-questions-whether-bullied-australian-boy-is-really-9-years-old/amp/

This video looks heartbreaking, but shame on BP for not doing research. This turned out to be staged. Although this kid had been yelled at that day, it was after he used slurs and bullied other students. Him and his mom are notorious at their school for causing problems, insulting faculty, students, and parents.

I was bullied hard. And i know what it does and how makes you feel. First you hate your self, can't deal with it cuz you think it's all your fault. After that you hate everyone. You become antisocial and have many anxiety problems. And depression.

I've been bullied by my own husband for 25 yrs. I completely understand your viewpoint and hurt. No matter how I changed myself, he always found something else to put me down over. BUT I have turned it into a positive and have learned to love myself despite what ANYONE thinks of me. And you can too with practice! You are stronger than you've been led to believe! Replace the thoughts of the bullies with your own loving, powerful thoughts and with time, you will be happy again. You are loved! You are special! And you are powerful! Every human being needs to believe this :)

Jesus F****** Christ to all the people who thought this was a put up and that Quaden actually had money and guns! One comment said this child is suffering anger issues. Well damned right he is; he is frustrated because no-one except his mother is listening to him. Others are not doing anything, teachers, principals. As a human who suffered god awful bullying, abuse, torment understand the feelings never go away; you learn to live with them. That's all. Be kind to each other.

Same message gets across. In the video he threatened to kill his bully. It's a circle of violence that never should have started. People just need to treat people how they want to be treated.

There is ONE, and only ONE reason behind every single one of the comments crapping on either the bullied child or on his mother: The commentators are trying to ease the burden of their own memories of BULLYING OTHER PEOPLE! You need to STFU and start dealing with the FACT that your own bullying had HORRIBLE effects on YOUR VICTIMS!

Nobody has been "crapping on the bullied child" and nobody is (that I could see) dismissing the harm the bullies are doing. However, the natural reaction of most parents of a bullied child is to reduce the exposure to bullies (by talking to the teacher, moving class or similar). Sharing the story on social media increases the boys exposure to bullies, hence people questioning the actions of the mother.

This is legit bullying. I wish there was an easy way to categorize what "real" bullying is because stories like this get lost in the sea of stories about pussies who just need to suck it up. Too many people try to play the victim which dilutes the pool and causes people to not pay attention actual victims.

I don't know all the facts behind this, but that poor gorgeous boy looks like he's genuinely in a lot of pain. It just breaks my heart that someone could see such a sweet boy, and be cruel to him.

Why does it matter if he wears high end clothes, we don’t know if they were a gift, hand me downs, second hand or if they are fakes etc and the photo of him holding a gun is a photo filter. He isn’t actually posing with a real gun.

The saddest thing is Quaden is an 18 year old actor who staged this whole thing. Yes it brings the sad face of bullying to the forefront of the media, but he should not have been making a fortune from it and conning celebrities out of their support. There are real kids being bullied out there that need real help! https://is.gd/ZuNDEk

Please open your eyes. This might be a "nice play on emotions" of regular persons. I am aware that the disability is awful and nobody would have any kind of disability. However, it seems to be a scam as the child is a celebrity (driven by parents). It's disgusting to use a person for profit:O Please have a look on: https://www.starnow.com.au/quadenbayles/
