While most people can barely watch horror films like Paranormal Activity without going into a full-blown breakdown, aka putting all the lights on in the house and not being able to sleep for days straight, some people like the thrill of it. They sleep like babies, never flinch and have the guts for the scariest things.
If you’re one of them, the two notoriously bone-chilling corners of Reddit known as the subreddits “Weird” and “Oddly Terrifying” must ring a bell to you. The latter one is home to 2M members who enjoy watching all the oddly terrifying content posted there.
So thanks to them, today, we have a great selection of terrifying photographs that prove a single shot on camera can be worthy of thousands of nightmares. Get ready to roll up in your blanket like a burrito (trust me, it helps!) and enjoy the list at your own risk.

It's A No For Me
Imagine waking up in the middle of the night only to see two gentlemen on the wall appreciating your sleeping beauty.
Bored Panda reached out to S. Elizabeth, writer and creator of the “Unquiet Things” blog, as well as the author of “The Art of the Occult: A Sourcebook For The Modern Mystic”. She has been interested in scary things that freak others out ever since she was 5 years old. “I saw a Dracula on an episode of Scooby Doo. I’d never even heard of vampires before, let alone seen one, and learning that there were blood-thirsty creatures who hover outside your home, just awaiting an invitation inside so they could poke their fangs through your neck and drink you up like a platelet-flavored Capri Sun scared me so badly that I’ve never been the same since.”
But at some point in her childhood, S. Elizabeth realized her panic and fright regarding the bloodsuckers and monsters from outer space had turned into fascination. “Whereas I would once hide my face behind a pillow when something scary was happening, I now began to feel the itchy urge to peek.” As she grew older, S. Elizabeth said that her fascination with fearsome things turned into a full-blown obsession. “From literature and film, to music and art, from that time forward, I was hungry for all things unearthly and strange, ghastly and ghostly, gruesome and grotesque,” she said.

Great, just another Australian thing to keep me up at night! How do you people live in terror? 😱
Last Thing A Fish Sees In Antartica
S. Elizabeth argues that there are things people are deeply fearful of now that they were many hundreds of years ago. “No doubt they will strike fear into the hearts of future generations. Death and loss and aging, war and sickness and disease. Fear of the unknown!”
Having said that, she believes that the details change with the times. “Maybe those fears take different shapes, but until we figure out how to stop the aging process and become immortal (like those vampires!), unless we get a handle on our violent human tendencies, unless as a people we learn to become more compassionate and empathetic—none of those things are going to change, and those fears will continue to plague us in some form or another.”

S. Elizabeth also explained: “maybe it seems like we’re more scared now than we ever were, what with our smart phones and a million apps with a million social media accounts bombarding us with all of the horrors of the modern world, 24 hours a day. As a lifelong horror enthusiast (and someone who is afraid of a lot of things, like A LOT), I feel that I’m not too far off.”

A Mother Hiding Her Face As She Puts Her Children On Sale (Chicago USA, 1948)
It was not common to sell your children in 1948. The picture is real, but it attracted nationwide media attention because it was as bizarre and horrifying to people then as it is now.
Load More Replies...In 2008 a woman in Mississippi tried to sell her grandchild and they had a hard time prosecuting her because there were no state laws in place specifically for that. Not that long ago.
But then to have them sitting on display on the front steps... Weren't people aware of pedophiles then? I cringe to think what happened to those kids.
Strangers molesting children, while a regular if gruesome news headline nowadays, would have been an unaccustomed topic to people's experience/world view 80 years ago. Less media coverage in that day & age, less news reports in general. Displaying the kids is the least problem, since childten had a lot of freedom of movement then. Sent out to play, called back for meals, no idea, where exactly they are in between. Anyone ambitious enough to grab a child would have been spoiled for choosing, with or without seeing them "advertised" beforehand. Also most child molesting takes place within kids' families/familiar surroundings (these days, too).

this is a really famous photograph. in seventh grade history, we had an entire week where we just analyzed this photo.
Whats creepy? The two in the back look like me and my sister and the boy in the front left looks like my brother...
I am a real chicken and yet I’m looking at these pictures. But this one has upset me much more than all the others. I could cry.
There's a long story behind this photo. It was initially done for publicity and money, but she did eventually sell her kids. She gambled and drank the money away. The kids all had hard lives - I recall that one of the boys was a slave laborer. All of the children reunited later in life though, so it was a happy end for them!
Reproduction reduction awful I'd rather you sell yourself brave momma!
One idiot mother for sale! Like there is nooooo other way but this! Shame on her!
Looks like she could have gotten a job in the graphic arts industry. That’s pretty nice lettering.
"In this tragic picture, the four children are seen on display on their front stoop as their mother hides her face from the photojournalist. The woman, Lucille Chalifoux, was only 24 years old, but pregnant with her fifth child at the time. Lucille and her husband Ray, age 40, were facing eviction from their apartment at the time. Ray had lost his job as a coal truck driver. Faced with the prospect of being homeless – and the daunting task of feeding so many mouths – they chose to auction off their own children." - https://www.ranker.com/list/story-behind-photo-of-children-for-sale/1499368817867 - story is there.

Why is it that the type faces on signs in those old, black and white photos where always done with such uniformity. Easy to read text with a clearly stated mesage, no cluttering with unnecessary graphics. Simple.
sell them right into sex slaves or servants. How do you think the kids felt having that sign up to show they weren't loved? Damn Shame.
Mom may just be crying feeling she had to give up her children because she couldn't take care of them any longer.
So what did a child go for back then? I know Americans believe in capitalism but that is just wrong.
I saw a sign just like that in the mid-1950s. The mother wasn't joking, she just couldn't afford to keep them. So sad to read this sign. All of these kids had hands around each other, look at that the mother on the top step, she is truly $$ desperate.
There was a book written about that called "Sold on a Monday." by Kristina McMorris.
Heart wrenching, for the distraught mother and her innocent children. Speaks volumes about our lack of community support at the time.

I guess u have to have some pity for those living in such dire straits of poverty which would compel them to try making money like this
Sad. Not as awful as the pic with the kkk at the fair. This mom was probably trying to provide a better life for her babies. I hope they got that, and they loved their mom for doing what was undoubtedly a very painful sacrifice. Can't imagine.
According to the story in the link that DaVo shared, the mom just wanted to have a social life. And two of the kids were bought by a horrible couple & treated like slaves. Here's the link if you want to have your heart broken: https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/4-children-sale-1948/
Load More Replies...This occurred often in the 1930’s during the Great Depression as people could not afford to feed their children. So, they would sell them instead.
1948? Surely more like ten or more years earlier, in Depression days.

Load More Replies...Why is this shocking in a country that had slavery? Is it because they are white or she voluntarily gave her kids away? The story behind this picture is sad. https://www.ranker.com/list/story-behind-photo-of-children-for-sale/1499368817867
And she sold the one she was pregnant with in this Pic. If you can't feed em, don't breed em 😱
You know that birth control was not real great then, right? Where's everyone ragging on the kids' father(s)?
