As a muslim woman do you have an idea how many others in your family and community wear it out of obligation/expectation and how many do it because they want to wear it? I'm really curious about this. It should absolutely be a woman's own choice - like everything else that affects our lives and health and well-being.

If it's a woman's choice - go for it. Dress as you want, cover your face if YOU want. But I very much doubt that all these women chose to cover their full body. What is disgusting is men choosing what women can wear, how they can live, what thay can/cannot study, and what they can/cannot do with their own bodies - oppression is disgusting; choice is beautiful.

I agree. This is a way to express faith, the way they have learned, hopefully feel comfortable with and the way their culture is providing. I am a Dutch, atheist, young, working woman and I feel uneasy with people who cover their faces. But I do not condemn them. Whenever the opportunity is there I try to talk to them and just ASK. Doesn't always go well, but hey, talking to a hardcore Christian isn't always easy either. We can't change the world when we shut out people and their beliefs from the get go(first time using that expression, always my favorite in books :))))

What is your reason for wearing it? If you are wearing it because of religion, may I point out that religious rules are pretty much controlled by men. Why (and I ask this in all sincerity) does your god not like women's faces to show? Or hair? What possible reasoning does your god have for this?

I, as a woman, only object if it is not the individuals choice. If a woman wishes to wear a hijab, then I will support her choice.

Here here! I couldn't agree more and was going to write similar before I read your comment. Just for some people to say "disgusting" is overriding all of the positive facts you mentioned and also to overlook that a lot of Muslim women choose happily to wear the hijab due to their religious beliefs NOT because they are made to wear them. Yes, it would be great if those women that chose not to wear a hijab for whatever reason wasn't punished for it, but as you rightly point out Debbie, this is a real move forward in a country that didn't even allow girls a basic education when young, to now having schools and a university. Don't hate the religion, or the people, or the dressing culture...hate the radicals, the terrorist regimes and the corruption of power in that country, because the everyday people I have met from there, both male and female, are very warm, thankful, humble and loving.

It's not faith. It's abuse. To dehumanize women this way - to be allowed to ignore her facial expressions, so that her smile or her sadness is of no consequence to anyone - comes out of the minds of depraved perverted men who want to use women as objects, not people. Yes, there are women even brainwashed into thinking they want it, but that is the same with any cult or cultish aspects of a society. It is absolutely disgusting to dehumanize women this way.

I do very much respect a woman's choice to cover, or not, as she pleases. However, the vast majority of them are most definitely indoctrinated into believing they have to for fear of punishment. You really cannot support a woman's (or girl's) right to have a choice without also recognizing that most don't actually have the choice. Some do, yes, and I am very glad that they do. But most, especially in places like Afghanistan, just don't have that choice, they are not given options, they do not get to have opinions. You're right that anyone who dictates what anyone else should wear is just as bad as others who do it, in either case, it's wrong. So, yes, it should absolutely be a choice, but the observation and knowledge that it most often is not one, is truly sad indeed.

I upvoted you, it is just your opinion. I think you should be free to wear a hijab, but the covering of the face is different in my opinion, being able to see each other is a natural part of human communication. Further more the covering of the complete body deprives you of much needed vitamin D.
