It’s good advice, though probably aimed at a specific population. It’s called reality testing. I’ve used it with clients who are awake and exhibiting symptoms of paranoia. I’ve used it myself when I used to experience sleep paralysis. I never looked in the mirror but I used to pinch my arm and when I realized it was a dream I would shut my eyes and push my arms into my chest, both as tight as I could (this worked 100% of the time). I experienced sleep paralysis nightly for about 4 years, so I got pretty good at waking up. Before realizing what it was, it was terrifying. Super fun times 🙄

Just before the alarm went off and scared me half to death this morning, I dreamt I was looking at myself in the mirror. I had black hair and dreamt it was my natural colour but still felt something was "off". (I did not realise I was dreaming. Maybe being blonde had something to do with it...)
