Good manners can get you far, opening doors that might otherwise remain closed.

For example, a courteous tone and a simple please or thank you can inspire call center employees to go above and beyond, even bend the rules to make your day a little brighter.

But as one story from the subreddit r/talesfromcallcenters reveals, some also use politeness with malicious intentions in mind. So be careful not to expose yourself to people too much, especially when your relationship is just transactional.

Scamming food delivery companies, is, unfortunately, a thing

Earlier this year, a spokesperson for one of the third-party delivery giants told Food On Demand that while not super common, “the unfortunate fact is that there are people who falsely claim that they didn’t receive their food in order to get a refund.”

The businesses are taking active measures to counter this dirty practice. DoorDash, for example, announced that it will require some customers to provide a four-digit code upon receiving their order — mainly targeting those who frequently report problems with their deliveries.

At the Food On Demand conference, restaurant operators expressed frustration over having to issue refunds when they’re not at fault.

“We know there are times that there’s a mess-up on our end where the guest genuinely deserves cash back,” said Sean Thompson, VP of information technology at Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. “But we know how people have learned to game the system and eat food for free.”

Freddy’s reported that chargebacks are rare in some areas but common in others, with an average of 1.5 to 2 percent of orders resulting in refund requests.

Riskified, a company that provides fraud and chargeback prevention solutions, said that a lot of what we know about food delivery fraud comes from the dark web, where fraudsters brag about their spoils and share tips on how to hustle a hot meal.

“Fraudsters targeting delivery apps often cover their tracks by erasing their cookie histories and using voice-over-IP (VOIP) manipulation as they test out stolen CCs [but] delivery policy abuse, also classified as liar buyer fraud, is a hot topic too,” Riskified wrote.

Additionally, fraud prevention is somewhat deprioritized because average order values are relatively low. Due to high volume, relatively low values, and easy accessibility, online food is tempting serial fraudsters and random opportunists alike.

People who have read this story are happy that this fraudster got what was coming to them

Yes, all call centers can still hear you when they place you on hold. You hear the music, they don't. They hear you grumbling. They hear you farting, taking a quick pee, all of it. Mute your end of the call when you're on hold. And don't be a scumbag scammer.

Whenever I order with Just Eat or Domino's they send me a 4 digit code I have to give to the driver so they know I'm definitely the one who ordered the food.

I've ordered for years, and have never had a problem with it being left at my door. COVID you know. Until one crazy Karen driver tried to fight the wrong delivery she made, and I'M flagged for it. The picture even showed the wrong house number!

In my area doordash takes a picture of the order outside your door. On my last order, it clearly wasn't my door, and wasn't my house number beside the door. I got the order re-sent to me, but the driver doubled down and fought it, even though the photo clearly showed the wrong house number. She even texted to harass me about it. Now, I'M flagged because of it. I have to give a PIN number to the driver before they release it. That defeats the purpose of ordering delivery! Leave it at my door while I get out of the bath tub. I use GrubHub now. Doordash are scammers.

When I have issues w uber eats they usually take care of it fully or partial. Grub hub is new for me so getting used to it. But DoorDash omg...so one order was wrong. Yeah the credited for that. Few orders later a diff issue an they won't fix it. So apparently you get one free they f****d up and then suffer outta luck. Honestly I had tried them first (DoorDash) and after that mess I wasn't going to use any of them again. But uber came through. I do screen shot the driver a car and plate because I have had drivers go get the food. Never mark it picked up and run off with it. Then they cancel and a diff driver goes to get it an there's nothing there. And once I had an employee at a place get my card info somehow and had to cancel that card. It's tough but it's hard to get across town where I am for food. If someone is there willing to bring it for a fee a tip that's fine. Grub hub highly discounts fees with Amazon prime accounts I just learned and so started to try them. Diff optiosn

FIVE YEAR OLD POST. Thanks so much B.P. for wasting my time. Nothing like reading something that is not only fake but was posted over 5 years ago. This is no longer relevant and those people who are posting advice like the original poster is going to read this are morons.

Oh, I know, I mean, once a situation happens ONCE, it NEVER HAPPENS EVER AGAIN, right? So why would ANYONE want to give advice on a situation that will only ever happen once, to one person, in the entirety of time/space? I mean, NO ONE ELSE will EVER try to scam customer service/a food delivery company ever again. Events like that only occur once in all of time/history, obviously! /major sarcasm in case it wasn't clear

People lie constantly. We delivered a mysterious bag to a customer on DoorDash. A very small bag of 'sushi' picked up at a filthy car repair place, probably d***s. The man was so eager to get his delivery he came out of his house to get the bag, my partner who was in the car took a picture. The customer then called DoorDash and said the order was never delivered. Also, pictures taken by our car dashboard camera saved us hundreds. A company said their records indicated the truck that hit us was in another state that day. Our picture proved otherwise.

If you hear silence you’re on mute and we can still hear you. If you hear music or a recording then you’re on hold and we can’t hear you.

Just be sure to note on the account exactly what you overheard when they were on mute. I love that we can hear what people are saying when they’re on hold and think we can’t hear them. I used to work customer service and have caught a lot of scammers and liars out. I always made detailed notes on their accounts, so they can’t just hang up and call back trying to fool another agent.
