What would you get by mixing elements of pop culture and dark humor? You'd get Ben Chen illustrations.
Ben Chen is a Taiwanese artist who creates clever illustrations, inspired by movies and illustration books. He describes his style as "dark, humorous and full of imagination" and it's clear why.
The illustrator takes characters from movies, TV shows, fairy tales and video games and combines them in unique, unexpected ways to create surreal situations that are twisted, weird and sometimes even horrifying.

They are all part of US culture: tv shows, cartoons, fairy tales, video games, etc. Sometimes the comments give hints as to what is referenced (i.e., Cookie Monster is a character on the tv show "Sesame Street.") I had to look up the video games, as they're not my thing.
