Russian Artist Paints Monsters

Soviet atmosphere is almost gone in big Russian cities, but when you go a little away and further you will find it. And it inspires me much to paint post apocalyptic scenes. Rusty bus stops, abandoned industrial buildings, broken machines – I love stuff like that, I try to see the story that stands behind it, like in a movie when the picture changes and shows you the past.

I’ve come to painting of scary creatures to accelerate my imagination for 100%. It is fun to see something mystical or strange in ordinary objects and surroundings, it keeps me curios and creative just like a kid. It really makes me happy, I often laugh when I’m drawing another monster. I guess my imaginary creatures are my army against reality, they protect me like music and books do.

My name is Masha SadMe, I am a dark artist and the leader of alternative rock band SadMe based in Moscow. I like to supplement the surrounding reality with fictional scary creatures. When I do this the usual things are more fun. Since I remember myself, I liked to scare and make people laugh. And I find it great that this habit does not go away, that in my art I do not become a person who takes himself and everything around too seriously. I don't find my characters scary, they can also be vulnerable, funny, ridiculous. When I describe my works, I often leave the choice for the viewer, how will the situation shown on the painting be resolved? This is kind of a game, an open ending as a test for your imagination, and a way to tickle your irrational fears and to have a little fun. In contrast to all the difficult situations in human life, we are given humor and art. It would be stupid not to use them.
