Who doesn’t appreciate a funny and well-timed joke? Those who love comedy know how hard it is to come up with a hilarious and smart joke that doesn’t offend anyone. There are all kinds of comedy that individuals appreciate, and some of them especially enjoy roasts. Having this in mind, a subreddit called r/RoastMe was created. Here users invite others online to take an opportunity and to come up with hilarious roasts. What these people do is upload a picture of themselves with a piece of paper with r/RoastMe written on it to make sure that they agree to this and provide a short bio of them. The subreddit has 2.3 million users who don’t miss a chance to show how well they can make fun of someone.

For some people, roasting might seem closely related to bullying and insulting. Who would want their flaws noticed and commented on by some strangers? To avoid any cruel and harsh comments and behavior, the moderators of the subreddit came up with 13 rules that the users have to follow. Main rules include making sure that the people in the picture actually agree to being roasted and someone isn’t using their picture, and the roastees also have to be at least 18 years old. It is extremely important to understand that all of this is done to brighten people’s day and make them laugh and not abuse someone, so it is crucial to evaluate one’s abilities not to cross that line.

Even with all these rules that protect people from being bullied, why do people agree to risk it and expose themselves to being a target of mockery? Very often people remind themselves that it’s healthy and even necessary to learn how to make fun of yourself in order to ease up on yourself as sometimes we tend to look at things too seriously. Making fun of things people don’t like about themselves or the situations they are in help to ease that tension and even see how ridiculous it all actually is, or how little it all really matters.

I always liked the story of when a suicidal man when on r/roastme saying “give me a reason to end it all”, and everyone offered encouragement and support. It’s good to remember roasts are good natured

I love the idea of roasting when it's people who are clearly there for it. But there seem to be so many broken people, or just really attention-needy people who probably won't benefit from to-the-bone humorous comments. I guess it's a choice, isn't it.

As to people who don't get why this is a thing. I think a lot of this is people who want to see how clever of a burn someone can put on them. An it's all in good fun I think because I don't get any hatred vibe from any of it. That's just my opinion though. So I could definitely be wrong.
