When We Picked Up Our Hedgehog We Thought He Hated Us, But Now He Won’t Stop Smiling
Meet Rick, the hedgehog who is always smiling. When we picked up this shy African Pygmy hedgehog from the breeder, he didn’t show us much joy. We used to think, “This hog hates us”...
But then, slowly he opened up and became the most cheerful little fellow who makes me smile even on the worst days. I started taking photos of him because I think he is the cutest thing on earth. Rick always works the camera like a supermodel.
These photos are too adorable not to share. Prepare yourself for a serious cuteness overload!

Bath Time!
Quick thing, if you have a pet hedgehog please don't bathe it like this. Take a damp washcloth and wipe down all their quills, but don't ever put them in a situation where they have to swim or float. It makes them very sensitive to ear infections, and they're not a species meant to swim.

These pictures are cute, but I'm really not sure how I feel about hedgehogs as pets. They are wild animals, not domesticated ones. If you find an underweight one and feed it up during winter, you are supposed to release it back into the wild come spring.
These are wild animals that need their habitat preserved. Far too often wild animals are "harversted" by destroying habitat, slaughtering parents, and then stealing the surviving young animals / eggs. #2 Do you really know what this animal's smile means? Really? It could just as easily be a sign of stress....
Hedgehogs are very difficult pets. I have my Felix because he was bought by a 12 year old girl who didn't believe me when I told her they dont warm up to people well. He was purchased and then left in a dirty cage because he didn't like being handled. I took him home, and keep his cage clean, feed him a well balanced diet. He let's me pet him behind his ears and rub his chin. But boy is it a pain in the a*s to clip his nails or give him a bath. Get a rat. They're smarter, more friendly and actually enjoy human interaction.
Hedgehogs aren't pets and certainly shouldn't be sold by "breeders". This whole thing is cruel and should not be encouraged.
These are adorable. I wish I could have one but, of course, you can't have a hedgehog legally in my country. Cause they're endangered or so.
I think they're illegal in the USA because they're not indigenous. :( otherwise I REALLY want one!
Load More Replies...He looks adorable. If he is coming from a breeder, he never had a chance of knowing what being a wild animal means. He was raised as a pet, and probably his family has been treated as pets for generations. That is how the domestication process works. I would never release him in the wild. He will simply die.
Do hedgehogs really enjoy being held on their backs all the time? Seems unnatural but I know nothing about them.
Just what I thought. I don't think that expression on his face is a smile either
Load More Replies...We got my hedgehog, Franklin, recently, so he's still warming up to us. I've gotten a few cute pics, though! They're so photogenic. <333
Oh God I love hedgehogs so much. They are the most adorale animals next to hippos. Imagine a cross between hedgehog and hippo. A very big Hipphog or a little Hedgepo 😍 Yeah, I'm being weird again.
These pictures are the sweetest pictures I have ever seen! I loved every one of them and he is so cute you just want to gob him up. Thank you so much for sharing them with us.
Most animals do not have a "smile", they don't have the muscle or bone structure or an emotion attached to facial expression, we have many more muscles in our faces that allow us to smile. Hedgehogs DO NOT smile. This is complete s**t.
