Employee Worked For A Company For 4 Decades And Got His Vacation Time Cut So He Took His Sweet Revenge
Working in a company for many years, decades even, can be a great thing: you know everyone and everything. You’re an expert in the job that you have, you have respect from others and most probably are satisfied with the pay, working hours, and other things that go into the contract.
So if those things are changed, for example, when the company is sold, it can really be a deal breaker, especially if those changes have to do with vacation days. Reddit user Rusticwhiskey shared a story of how an employee that had worked for the company for four decades got his revenge for reducing his vacation days.

A person that has worked for a company that gave generous amounts of vacation time shared how their coworker got revenge when the new owners reduced his time off

A person on Reddit under the nickname Rusticwhiskey shared a story of his coworker in the subreddit MaliciousCompliance. He titled his post “Get rid of my vacation? Have fun replacing me” and more than 61k people upvoted it.
The narrator begins his story by saying that he worked at a company that, in comparison, was generous with the vacation time they allowed. And especially people who had worked there for a really long time were valued and awarded 10 weeks of time off in total.
The company owner sold his business and the new owners started changing everything
One of those people who had worked for a really long time was Jimmy. He was a loyal employee for the company for 43 years and the 10-week vacation was a norm to him.
But like all good things, this policy didn’t last forever. The company owner was ready to retire and sold his corporation. He promised that there wouldn’t be any big changes, but the new owners proved him wrong.
The first thing they did was reduce the maximum vacation time to 4 weeks
They also fired a bunch of people, including Jimmy’s backup
Jimmy was mad and instead of coming to train his new backup, took 10 weeks off
The new owners started by changing the vacation policy. Now everyone would get maximum 4 weeks and if someone had more that they hadn’t used up, they had to do it before the end of the year.
They also fired a bunch of people, including Jimmy’s backup. Jimmy and his backup were the only two people who knew how to make a specific part and now Jimmy was left alone. But the new owners quickly found a trainee who he was supposed to train. However, Jimmy decided he wanted a vacation and took his 10 weeks off.
Three days after his vacation ended, he was nowhere to be seen and then called to say he quit
During those weeks, Jimmy wasn’t on an exotic island enjoying the sun and sea. He was searching for a new job and managed not only to find one, but had already started it.
He wasn’t planning to come back and train the new employee. He was really mad and didn’t care how the company would function without him. And he called to announce he’d resigned only three days after his vacation was over.
At the end, reducing vacation time cost the company a considerable amount of money

The company then had to contact the previous owner to ask him to teach new workers how to produce the parts that only the fired person and Jimmy knew how to make.
The previous owner was not happy about how the people to whom he sold his company were managing things. And he charged a lot of money for teaching new workers to produce the parts. He probably wanted to teach them a lesson, as the other option was to close down, so they had to pay.
People in the comments were on Jimmy’s side, saying that he had a right to act like this after being mistreated. What do you think of this story? Let us know in the comments!
People seem to agree that Jimmy was right to teach the new owners a lesson
That works out well, because they sure took it up the butt on this one

Conservative here, laughing my ass off at that company and wishing I could've afforded to hire Jimmy. A genuine capitalist would understand that you can't get more profits this way. A true conservative/capitalist understands that an unfettered, solely-for-profit business model cannot sustain true growth.

I am always amazed at just how much CEO-level parents way overestimate their kids’ business acumen. Most don’t make the one or two kids who are most interested in, and most capable of, running the place work summers in the mailroom (or whatever the lowest level job is) while in high school, then progressively give them harder jobs with more responsibilities as they go through college—-on a business-related major ONLY—-so that, by the time they graduate they can be brought to work in different departments in the office in full time. Then, when the parent(s) finally decide to retire, the kids know the business bottom to top, and have the education and training to keep it running smoothly, instead of running it into the ground.

It's simple just to say that the new owners were profit-driven and wanted to streamline the business as much as possible, and that's what it looks like on its face, but the original owner sold because he was old and wanted to retire, not because the business was failing. Anyone coming in and acquiring the company should take a loooooong good look at how things work, and why they work, before they go messing it all up (or maybe fixing it up). Bless Jimmy.
I knew someone who bought a small company. There were problems with under-performing employees, but she made the changes gradually.

smh - yup! New owners of my old company decided they could hire three kids fresh out of tech school for what I was getting after 25 years on the job. So in one greedy, self-serving move, they lost 25 years of experience knowledge and loyalty, plus they needed to pull one or more of the remaining overworked department employees off their work to train the newbies. I agree with both. I barely have a 14 days paid off leave a year and this dude gets freaking almost 3 months. Then the new owner obviously cuts it to one month. It's still a lot. The employee was a little unreasonable although that is somewhat understandable. I'm jealous. I want 4 weeks paid off too :( I wanted to go to a honeymoon and after all of the holidays (where the company declared it wasn't working) after working for a year all I got if 5 days paid off! 5 days! and this guy complains about 30 days of paid off leave...
Hmm, don't have people contracts stating the amount of leave days? So new owners would need to make workers sign new contracts accepting fewer leave days?
The basic error of bosses who think their staff needs them (and the job) more than they need their staff. And while the assumption might be true in many individual casses, overall it really isn't.
Yeah, had a similar thing happen to me. Owner treated his workers well and benefits were above average in the field. He then said one day that he was selling the company. I knew it was going to go downhill from there. He took a golden parachute and said nothing would change. The corporation, cut 401k, cut pto hours, etc. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), I decided to stay. 4 mile commute, reduced responsibilities and an easy job. I'm getting on the sunset of my career, so I am not looking to move. Of course they could have cut our pay, but they weren't that incompetent.
8 weeks for 25 years? Seriously? And that is generous? Maybe I misread something, but in any European country 4 weeks a year is normal. How is USan example to anyone?
It's illegal to change employment contracts eg by removing leave entitlements, at least where i live. Go jimmy
I was a technical writer for the IRS, and was putting together user manuals for various departments. I called one guy to explain how his department worked and he said, "Thank God! I'm the only person who knows what has to be done, my boss doesn't know or care, and I'm retiring in 3 months."
Firing people of retirement age isn't illegal in "right to work" areas. It may be the reason they fire you but they don't have to even tell you why they're letting you go.
I am guessing someone else can do his job now that he left since he did have 10 weeks when someone else had to do his job while he was on vacation.
Read the article again and pay attention this time, they had a backlog of the parts he produced to hold them over during his time off.

He needs to sell the business, but he won't because he knows whoever buys it will "cheapen" everything and we have 90 employees who depend on us for their jobs. He goes into work EVERY MORNING at 5:30 am and doesn't come home until almost 6:30 pm. He does late night pick-ups and deliveries when it is necessary. We own a rental store. And we know when he and our son are no longer taking care of business it will begin to fail. He is upset about that because he, literally, built it from nothing. But, there you go.
Someone else on this thread suggested selling such a business to the employees. Have the two of you thought of that?
Load More Replies...Unless the new owners reneged on the specifics of their sale, it sounds like the old owner may have messed up. These things are usually negotiated during a sale, especially if the owner actually cares. At my company, when a building or site is sold, if our employees are kept on we make sure their outstanding PTO liability is carried over to the new owner or is completely paid out by the old owner. And their accrual rates never change.
So many in the US who are 5-15 years away from retirement being pushed out, forced to quit and train their offshore replacements. All the great tech jobs going to Asia while we fight for factory jobs to come back and to raise the minimum wage. Tech and IT jobs are the high paying, work from home jobs. The golden jobs of now and the future. And we are quietly letting those jobs leak out, to be gone forever.
]sarcasm here[ That's not true, when Biden shut down the pipeline, John Kerry said that these people who lost 150,000 dollar jobs will have no problem, all they had to do was get jobs with solar panel factories, so he isn't worried about these men losing their jobs, their paychecks, their homes, nope, he's not worried at all.

Load More Replies...My husband and I own a business. He is 77 and I am 75.

Illegal? How? He used up his vacation time and then quit after they changed the terms of his contract. Nothing wrong here.

Why are you here? Seems like you're voicing your rage at people that don't exist. Are you ok? Therapy is for everyone delusions and hallucinations are dangerous I would get diagnosed ASAP
