Parrot Gets A Brand New Beak After Being Rescued In A Horrible Condition

It’s a new year and we all hope it brings good news into the world. Here’s a story of an amazing parrot rescue mission to start off the wholesome news and warm your heart.
In Brazil, a parrot was found with a severely damaged beak that put the bird’s life at risk. Needless to say, a healthy and strong beak is a key to parrots’ quality of life as it plays a major role in eating, climbing, manipulating and crushing objects, and protection.
The hopeless parrot got a second chance at life when professionals at the Planura-based Animal Rehabilitation Center called “Renascer ACN” were able to reconstruct an impressive and fully functioning beak so the bird could survive.
Paulo Roberto Martins Nunziata, the founder of Renascer ACN, told Bored Panda about how they managed to rebuild a perfect beak for this parrot.

“This parrot was found in a terrible condition and had totally lost its beak. Together with veterinarian Maria Ângela Panelli Marchió, we rescued it as soon as we found out,” Paulo Roberto Martins Nunziata, who founded Renascer ACN 3 years ago to help all types of animals, told Bored Panda.

Handmade out of polymethylmethacrylate, this brand new beak would take a chainsaw to remove

“The process is completely handmade. The material used, polymethylmethacrylate, has a quick hardening (three to five minutes) and is so resistant that it would need a chainsaw to be removed.”

The parrot has now recovered and is able to carry on with its normal life

“Today it has a normal life. However, it just can’t be returned to its natural habitat because even though the prosthesis is resistant, there’s a risk of it falling over time, as these animals use their beaks for everything.”

I assume the photo of the skull is just to show what they used as a model for the prosthetic.

Anyone who spends the time and energy making our smallest animals better again is a hero in my book. So often the smaller they are the less likely they are to get that kind of treatment so It made my heart smile seeing the lil birb with his new beak.

Won't the old beak Keratin still grow and deform the new plastic beak, or even push it loose eventually? The anchors will probably hold for awhile at least but The Keratin is like fingernails and they'll keep growing underneath. Depending on the pressure it exerts, it may become impacted like wisdom teeth.

To whomever posted this, thank you from the bottom of my heart (or should I say, obrigada demais!). People used to bring me sick parrots & parakeets to heal back in Honduras. These were birds that could no longer survive in the wild after getting injured by illegal poachers (but nobody would buy, either, due to their injuries). Dad taught me to heal them and built a huge walk-in aviary in our backyard. This was over 30 years ago and I now live in the US. I needed to see this story. It brought so much hope to my heart, that there's a lot of good people still out there, doing selfless acts for others. Thank you!
