"Although there are several studies that measure introverts and extroverts, the Myers Briggs Typology Inventory – a popular personality measure – found in a global study that 56.8% of the population are introverts," says Joanne Broder, a practicing psychologist and fellow of the American Psychological Association."
While there is no single characteristic that defines an introverted person, generally speaking, introverts prefer being alone or among a few people rather than larger crowds.
Introverts frequently seek out and enjoy opportunities for solitude and often choose activities where they can be alone or in small groups such as walking, hiking, reading, photography, DIY projects, playing video games, writing, gardening, drawing, or listening to music.
It's not that they detest spending time around others, it just requires more effort out of them, and they get to a point where they need to take a break and recharge by being on their own.
Did this this morning. Ended up mis timing and we both ended up having to go back to the apartment for something. She said morning I said keys.
According to Dr. William Irwin, who is a professor of philosophy at King's College in Pennsylvania, to be an introvert is not necessarily to be shy, though the two can go together.
To be shy is to be diffident and unassertive, to be reluctant, and oftentimes regret it later.
An introverted person might be none of these things. As Irwin put it, they are not agoraphobes; they do not fear or avoid all societal interaction, and they're not necessarily hardcore loners or misanthropes.

Broder adds that introverts are people who are comfortable enough to be in their own skin and are simply happy to be alone with themselves. The psychologist says that people with the personality trait are also generally more selective in who they invite into their world, "which tend to be genuine and true friends, as opposed to casual peers."
The nice thing about speaking Portuguese as my first language, while living in the USA, is that I can just say to everyone "desculpe, não falo inglês". I even answer all phone calls with "alô", so I can quickly tell them I don't speak english when they start talking to me. It gets me off of a lot of call lists. This is more useful than speaking Spanish, because a lot of Americans can speak Spanish too. Portuguese is far less common here.
Ultimately, it’s perfectly okay to be an introvert, Broder says, "because introverts are comfortable, authentic and independent, rather than molding themselves to the crowd to be included with others."
I think this thread is mixing concepts AGAIN. Being an introvert doesn't mean being shy or having social anxiety. I'm an introvert. I can speak about myself, but I don't want to. I'm not scared of people, or nervous. I just don't like people in general. I prefer being with my dogs and cats, but I can talk to people if I have to. People make me feel tired after a while, but never anxious.
Me don't morning word leave please alone. I have a downvote gremlin lol 😂😂😂
I have a face that somehow encourages strangers to talk to me. Not the cool, funny, popular strangers - more the weird psychos and old people who want to share their life's stories. It's especially bad when I'm on the train after a long day. I always wear headphones to show I'm in no talking mood, but some people are just immune to this kind of signal...
Introversion is not the same as social anxiety. I'm extremely introverted and have no problem asking for what I need. Why does BP confuse introversion with mental health issues ALL THE TIME. Introversion is a temperament shared by 50+% of the population, it's not an aberration!
Oof, not me. I am happy to talk to people, but I'm not about to give out private information to people I actually meet in real life. I don't care how long I've known you. My few friends don't even know my middle name, and most don't know my last name. I had a friend for years who only discovered I had kids last week. My oldest is in college. I only talk about myself here because my name isn't really BeesEelsAndPups (it's actually Beelzebub, but don't tell anyone). So my door isn't "heavy", it's welded shut, entry denied. All conversations shall be kept superficial, thank you.
As an Introvert, First Class, and something of an empath, today was an uncomfortable day. Go to dentist, tooth filled, three strangers, one of them telling me her dog had been hit by a car, but he has a broken leg. Go to next appointment at SpecSavers, more strangers, the young person telling me her 17 year old cat had passed, on to have my covid and 'flu jabs, more strangers, only to be told by the pharmacist that he has to attend a funeral on Friday. What am I? some sort of empathy dump? Being an introvert is exhausting!
Reply to self, I have warned my husband that I probably won't get out of bed until tomorrow afternoon!
