40 Times People Had Such ‘Genius’ Solutions To Various Problems, They Got Posted On ‘Redneck Engineering’
Don’t you ever feel like we take things too seriously? I mean, if the heating stops working, there are many very questionable, yet bizarrely ingenious ways to go about it—like putting a fan next to the oven. It’s totally not smart, not safe, it doesn’t work, and it’s basically a plain horrible idea.
But in the bizarre and crazy world of “Redneck Engineering,” things are always far from the norm. Before we step into the Reddit community r/RedNeckEngineering, I should warn you not to try this at home under any circumstances. Because safety will likely be breached, and the gadgets you’ll see will raise an alarming level of suspicion.
So let’s see what the buzz is all about in this hilarious subreddit with 354k members that has been rolling since 2013. Whether it's a curse or a blessing, we will find out.

Bored Panda reached out to the founder of r/RedneckEngineering to find out more about their community. It turns out, the term “redneck engineering" is open for interpretation, but the redditor assured us that it's also “the kind of thing you know when you see.”
For example, “It can range from something as common as using a hand mirror to replace a side-view mirror to something complex like building a backyard water slide with a loop-de-loop.” The members of the subreddit give “bonus points if it'd make an OSHA inspector cringe.”

The biggest difference between now and the old days in 2013 when r/RedneckEngineering was created is growth. The founder said that he used to be responsible for most of the posts, but the community has become really self-sustaining over time.
When it comes to submissions, you’ll see all kinds of bizarre makeshift gadgets and very questionable workarounds. Most posts generally come from people finding “low-budget workarounds to everyday problems with a few high-effort engineering projects and other submissions sprinkled in.”

2 korean student's made a raft out of potato chip bags to prove they have too much air in them.
It annoys me every time I hear people complain about the amount of air in snack chip bags. 1.) The air is necessary, because without it, the chips would get crushed during shipment. 2.) THEY'RE SOLD BY WEIGHT. It doesn't matter if there's empty space in the bag, 5 ounces (or however much in a given bag) is 5 ounces. Learn to read labels
And the gas in them actually helps them from going stale. I never understood why people don't get that they will be crushed without the air, I worked that out when I was a a child...
Load More Replies...The air inside bags of chips is Nitrogen, it helps keep them from going stale, and also prevents the majority of the chips from being crushed during transport and stocking.
So, they'd rather chips be vacuum packed? Enjoy your bag of crumbs, idiots.
Why does nobody here realise that too much air in each bag is the issue, not how many chips are in the bag or how they're stored. Most chip bags are over full with air. So more air=less bags in the carton=more cartons in the truck=more trucks to deliver more cartons. Its about reducing the amount of Carbon Monoxide in the atmosphere from the amount of trucks on the road. One truck won't make a lot of difference but 10 million will.
They can't overfill them too much or the bag will pop. The cartons are a set size that hasn't changed in my years handling them, and the cartons have a set number of baggies in them by brand that also hasn't changed in my years handling them. If that box holds 32 bags and 32 doesn't fit in it then the box won't be sent and the machinery adjusted. All of this stuff is so tightly regulated and standardised that your situation will not happen.
Load More Replies...They should start making chip bags without air. People will soon be begging to get that air back.
but the air is there to protect the chips from getting crushed... I never understood why people have a problem with this
Very cool, but doesn't prove there's too much air in them.
This would be a great recycle/use for empty plastic bottles
I've seen it done during one of those 'Anything Goes' regattas people seem to have all summer (in regular years, anyway.)
Load More Replies...They proved that air floats and that the chips were still fresh and waterproof after the test. The air is in the bag for a reason, fresh, unbroken chips.

Could always buy chips in a tube... although the Pringles tube are a nightmare for recycling too (although they are trialling an all-paper version of their tubes in the UK at the moment).
The courage or audacity that it's needed to prove your own ideas some times, admires me, I hope it was in summer
Pretty sure they have nitrogen in them so they don't go stale, the "air" also stops them all being squashed and broken

Grow up poor. You make do or do without. Mock at your own peril. Assume at your own peril, as well. I've seen crazy-as-eff hacks in more than one nation. Also, ti's not just about money. Sometimes it's about "need it to work until I *can* replace it after I'm off the clock and finish the laundry and feed my kids and can get to the place that has them..."
Poverty should never be mocked. For the most part the ingeniousness is being honored.
Load More Replies...In NZ we refer to 'redneck engineering' as 'No.8 wire ingenuity ' (No.8 wire was/is a common fencing wire, handy for a lot of quick farm fixes I guess, probably how we got the term)
My dad was an engineer. He would say if someone else can fix this, why can't I? We never paid for a repairman. If a specific tool was needed, he'd make it with what we had. Since I was his "helper" from the time I was little, I've had the same feeling. I maybe the only woman in the auto parts store or the tool area of a Lowes but we have saved a lot of money doing things ourselves, plumbing, patching, electric wiring, painting, minor car repairs (used to have VW, Dad and I pulled the engine 3x's) if it's on YouTube or I can find a manual I'll give it a try. The only time I worry looking at some of these repairs is if they look unsafe. Some risks aren't worth it. Be safe.
Many of these are not unsafe, and show an amazing ingenuity. How do people think many of the slick, mass-produced tools we have today got invented?
Why is it called Redneck Engineering? From what I see you don't have to be a Redneck to come up with this kind of stuff.
