I’m Jarryn Dower, a 22 year old artist from Ocean Grove, Australia, who turns old surfboards that would previously be destined for the rubbish tip into works of art suitable for wall mounts or display.

Having grown up around the Bellarine and Surf Coast, the beach and surf culture has had a large influence on my interests and lifestyle. Accompanied by a passion for drawing from a young age, it was only natural that the two ingredients would meet!

I purchased my first boards earlier this year in February, with what seemed a simple idea that it would be cool to find some old surfboards and chuck some artwork on it, something different to the tradition canvas. Armed with a few Posca Pens, I was met with the challenge of how I was going to apply the paint to the surface. After some trial and error, I settled for a stippling technique. It’s incredibly time consuming, but the detail is worth it!

Depending on the amount of detail involved, these unique boards take anywhere from 25 – 70 hours to finish. Once the artwork is complete, I seal it with a clear coat for protection.

I’m now onto my 10th board. I really enjoy doing it, upcycling these old boards that have usually been sitting for years, covered in dust, or ready to be thrown out, and then turning them into these great pieces of art!
