Pancake Ice Has Formed In A Secluded Bay Near North Avenue Beach
Holy carp, that's a real thing! According to Wikipedia: "Pancake ice is a form of ice that consists of round pieces of ice with diameters ranging from 30 centimetres (12 in) to 3 metres (9.8 ft), depending on the local conditions that affect ice formation. It may have a thickness of up to 10 centimetres (3.9 in).[1] Pancake ice features elevated rims formed by piling the frazil ice/slush/etc. up the edges of pancakes when they collide, both due to random bumping into each other and because of periodic compressions at wave troughs. Pancake ice may be formed in two ways. It may be formed on water covered to some degree in slush, shuga or grease ice. Alternatively, it may be created by breaking ice rind, nilas or even gray ice in the agitated conditions.

That may not be related to the cold (at least not directly). Looks like poor adhesion between the thermoplastic and the pavement when the markings were installed plus normal traffic or maybe a snow plow.

If You Go For A Run Today, This Is What You'll Look Like
I have always despised winter. I live in Montréal and it gets cold, here. Really, really cold. But this year, whilst everyone else is complaining about the freezing weather, I am actually very grateful for it! It has made my newly acquired pre-menopause hot flashes much easier to deal with. Thinking about moving to Alaska, actually. For real. #naturalcureforhotflashes
It's so cold that my washing machine is frozen and I haven't been able to do laundry in a week. I'm out of underwear and pants so I stayed home from school to avoid any incidents in gym class.
Love that [people took the time to share some photos from their homes, cool stuff!
Meanwhile in southern Arizona it's been in the mid seventies.... (aka the reason I moved here from Boston 25 years ago....I'll take hot over cold any day!)
WOW this is a lot of snow and ice, but the pup with the winter jacket... :) :O :O :O
One time it was so cold in eastern Washington that the soda cans my brother kept in the back seat froze and burst. He had soda ice crush all over his back seat.
Meanwhile, here in Australia where I am it is 44* Celsius (112 f). The bitumen is melting on the roads.
One day a friend told me that in his country was so cold that if you make pipi in the street you could make a arch of pipi from penis to the floor. Now I almost believe him. 🙈
He was from Luxemburg and I was never saw snow at that time.
Load More Replies...Municipal pipes are deep enough underground to be insulated from the cold. The water going into your house is constantly moving, preventing it from freezing. If a building is vacant though, the water can indeed freeze and burst the pipes. That's why if you were to leave for a lengthy winter getaway, you'd have to empty your pipes and water heater completely or else your basement will be an indoor pool when you get back.

Time to show your stupid president what the global warming ( in which he doesn't believe) can do.
Serious things are going in the world. Here in Europe we don't get real winters anymore. Seriously, it was +15C in Cologne on 31st of December. Even in more Northern regions the temperature is around zero degrees Celsius right now. When I was a child, January used to be the coldest and the most snowy month of the year with temperature dropping down to -35C on some days. And now, Eastern USA is freezing...

I live in Erie and have more pictures of the record snowfall but don't know how to post them
I don't know what to say. I live in Phoenix Arizona and its still in the 70s. We are not having winter at all this year. Flagstaff has no snow. We haven't even had rain in almost two months. I would love for whatever these people are having weather wise to move southwest .
Seeing all the pictures of snow makes me really miss it snowing in Ky. It used to snow here all the time when I was a kid, and now we get maybe a dusting if anything. The worst we ever had was 30" back in 1994. Louisville was shut down for 2 weeks. My kids would love seeing something like that.
Just like every winter was, when I was a kid. Nowadays there is hardly any snow in winter. Looks like, it moved transatlantic…
Okay, I surrender. Please show some pictures of someplace warm. On second thought make it someplace HOT!
Global warming, just ask the politicians who have that as one of their favorite causes.
Global warming refers to average global temperatures rising, not the temperatures of specific places. In addition, the cycles of el nino and la nina cause significant variation in weather for different years.
