Human DNA is programmed to be unique. Our bodies contain about 20,000–25,000 genes responsible for giving you brown hair instead of red or a small forehead instead of a big one. They define your height or lactose tolerance, your risk of heart disease, and how fast you can run.
Even though we are all special, some of us are born with even more genetic diversity. Multiple-color eyes, unique birthmarks, albinism, and vitiligo are to name a few.
To celebrate these differences, the Bored Panda team has collected pictures of people with these (and other) unique features. They remind us to avoid judgment and accept everyone with their own beautifully distinctive qualities.

The most influential effect of mutation is its role in evolution. Without these changes in DNA, organisms wouldn’t be able to develop further. Genes in certain or different conditions can improve themselves to help the organism adapt. If proven successful, they can be passed on to other generations.
Contrary to common conceptions, human evolution hasn’t stopped. In countries without good healthcare, people who survive infectious diseases can pass on their genetic resistance to their offspring. DNA evidence shows growing resistance to illnesses like malaria and Lassa fever, which saves people’s lives every year. We may also be adapting to unhealthy diets, as our blood pressure and cholesterol are lowering as a response to our fat and sugar-induced diet.

Vitiligo Appreciation Post. Took Me 28 Years To Realize That I’m Blessed
My Brother Was Born With Brown Eyes And A Slice Of Blue
Some genetic varieties have become so common that we don’t consider them to be unique anymore. The mutation that gives people blue eyes is actually quite recent in the history of humans. This change in genes removes the brown pigment from the iris and makes it blue. Researchers were able to trace it back to the first time it occurred in a Spanish person who lived a mere 7,000 years ago.
Red hair is also among the most well-known genetic varieties that people have. While we all might know a person with fiery locks, they are still pretty rare, as only 5–8% of people have this feature.

Humans Have Relics Of Growth As A Fetus, Representing Cell Division And Trails. They Are Invisible Under Normal Conditions But Can Become Apparent On The Skin Due To "Genetic Mosaicism"
Unique genes have very useful effects on an individual’s well-being. For example, most people in the world are lactose intolerant, but due to mutations, it has become possible for them to digest dairy. Lactose-tolerant individuals often originate from northwest Europe and some parts of Africa, where farming became a major source of food.
Additionally, some gene mutations explain why some people don’t get sick. Numerous people have avoided catching diseases during COVID-19, HIV, and other outbreaks. Hyperimmune people can be studied to discover medicines and new ways to treat diseases.

Numerous superheroes in comics, books, and cinematic universes attribute their magical abilities to genetic mutations. Even though it’s largely fictitious, there are specific genetic variations that allow us to have some “super qualities”. For example, a LRP5 gene mutation can increase bone density to the point where it becomes impossible to break them. The bones are known to crack baseball bats and withstand car wrecks.
People with the “short sleeper” mutation naturally need only four hours of sleep to feel totally energized. The lucky 1% of the population can sleep less than the recommended seven to eight hours without feeling sleep deprivation.

A mutation that’s just for the ladies allows them to see a wider range of colors. Known as tetrachromacy, it’s present in about 12% of women, giving them “supervision” to see hues undetectable by other people. That’s why sometimes for men, “all the colors look the same,” while women can’t choose their favorite one.
Moreover, the “sports gene” mutation gives people super speed because it controls fast-twitch muscles, allowing them to flex faster for running and other physical tasks. A study in 2008 found that the majority of top runners and athletes have this mutation. Well, it seems that sometimes it all comes down to your DNA.

I Have Always Had The Ability To Bend My Legs Backwards - So Easily, In Fact, That I Sometimes Do It Without Noticing. Most People Seem To Find It Alarming
Looks like EDS (I have the same hyper mobile form) or at least hyper mobility syndrome. I thought this was a fun party trick, along with other flexible joint stunts, now I'm a full time wheelchair user
Yeah this is really, really bad for your joints to do. If you can bend them this far back, you are hypermobile, and chances are this hypermobility stems from for example from having EDS. And if you are hypermobile regardless the cause, putting pressure on the joints like this can cause permanent damage to them.
Load More Replies...Looks like my legs. Btw. if your knees bend like this, you shouldn't do it too much especially while standing, bc it can wear down the connecting tissues and cause joint pain later (as told by my physical therapist). Great for the shock value tho 😅
I didn't realize I did this until I saw myself in a photograph, knees locked back like that. I was maybe 12 or so. I thought it looked gross and even now when I stand still I make the conscious effort to not overbend. (Am now 30+.) Turns out it was a good call haha
Load More Replies...Or just hyper mobility. You can have hyper mobility without having a connective tissue disorder
Load More Replies...When this happens accidentally, OUCH. (Source, mine do it at random sometimes. Fûçking agony.)
Yep. I had to quit my last real job because they moved me to being only a cashier and after standing in one spot for 4-5 hours at a time (with my legs like this, I found out later), I wouldn't be able to get out of bed the next day. I still have to correct myself if I have to remain standing in place somewhere (which I try to avoid doing).
Hypermobility. Both myself and my daughter have this. She was 26 months old before growing. Super flexible hips, knees and ankles. Unfortunately I shattered my ankle when I stumbled and after surgery was left with nerve damage. My daughter only wears shoes that are very supportive. Dr Martin boots are perfect
My youngest has hyper mobility she can turn her feet around and do creepy leg stuff but she is also flatfooted so lots of problems walking without stumbling
There was a gymnast and she fell during a landing and her legs bent like this…..😖😖😖
I can do this too!! Not quite this drastic but it is noticeable. I stand like this all the time without noticing, it's just how I normally stand. My girlfriend says I have bird legs... haha
There was a guy in my martial arts school that used to be able to do the same thing to his arms. Always gave me the heepie jeebies.
I used to be able to do that but I can’t anymore. I remember I used to sit so weird in school.

I Was Born With A Double Thumb But It Was Surgically Removed
Having an extra (partial) finger is uncommon, but not nearly as uncommon as most people think, it's just that most people will get their child surgery at a young age, so that's why we're not used to actually seeing it. Numbers vary in different studies, but it's somewhere around 0.1% of white people and 1% of black people.

This post was awesome! Most I see are repeated and its nice and informative to see new examples about how amazing our bodies can be. Good one BP.
I wholeheartedly agree <3 I'm up to #5 and came down here to say how pleased I am that so far no trolls are to be found. Yay!

Load More Replies...people with vitiligo are so freaking pretty I swear. Like there’s just something so otherworldly and gorgeous about it. I really like how this post shows vitiligo as something beautiful instead of just a skin condition ❤️
As someone with Vitiligo I don't see characters on TV with it. It would be great seeing a main character on a TV show have it. Disabilities and conditions are still mostly invisible on TV.
Yes! For something that seems fairly common I never see it. I'm lucky I'm quite pale so mine isn't quite so obvious but I get so excited when I see someone else with it!!
Load More Replies...Again, with all due respect (I probably will be banned again), this post feels it was made after somebody said: "Show me the creeps". Shame on me but I didn't enjoy or at least learn much.

Disappointed by all the people reacting with being unsettled or scared by some of these pictures.
A lot of Ehlers Danlos and Marfan syndrome symptoms where show. These are (together with Loeys-Dietz) syndromes where the collagen is affected causing all kinds of weird and painfull problems. But indeed very interesting. Unfortunately there is no cure and you can die at an early age.
In this sometimes unkind world where if you look different you may be treated differently, I wish all those in the photos, commenters, and anyone with something going on, will continue to hold their heads high and consider themselves as extra special.
I don't know why you would think that. Yes, many of these people are beautiful. However, some of these people suffer from serious health side effects and extreme bullying due to their unique features.
