8 Powerful Posters That Showcase Stereotypes About Women And Then Shuts Them Down
Words are powerful. They can knock someone down or, on the contrary, inspire them to carry on. Highlighting this, South African company PPS has launched a campaign titled “Women acknowledged.” Aimed at both, young, up-and-coming as well as established women professionals, the campaign opens up a dialogue about the stereotypes that women face in the workplace.

“With its provocative and honest style, the campaign tackles the labels that disempower women by re-formulating them in an empowering way, challenging age-old bias,” PPS wrote on its website.
“Each piece in the ‘Women acknowledged’ series commences with a disempowering statement, which is then countered by an empowered statement. The campaign will focus on women in some of the main careers that make up the PPS membership base, namely engineering, academia, accounting, architecture, law, medicine, and dietetics.”
“Irrespective of their qualification, female professionals are not treated as equals to their male counterparts because they are seen as women before being seen as professionals,” Ayanda Seboni, Group Executive: Brand, Marketing & Communications at PPS, said.
“PPS is passionate about women and their success across industries. With this campaign, we hope to encourage women to break the glass ceiling and to create a community of professionals who can benefit from each other’s successes regardless of gender. At PPS, we believe that success is better shared by helping women to achieve their financial goals for prosperity, ” Seboni added.

Good post though, it reminds me of that old riddle - A father and son get in a car crash and are rushed to the hospital. The father dies. The boy is taken to the operating room and the surgeon says, “I can’t operate on this boy, because he’s my son.” (the surgeon is his mum, it's amazing how many people couldn't figure it out...)
That one in med school... you should have seen the faces around me (I'm female)... Oh. My. Goodness....

Perhaps they felt that would be stereotyping police officers? Stereotyping engineers to be an overthinking bunch is of course OK - the nerds don't count. Right?

I really needed this post because of irritating and embarrassing micro-aggressions at school. In high school, many of these gender stereotypes start forming and are embodied by female students. I used to be ashamed of my excitability and assertiveness, since other students and teachers would always be taken aback by a loud, intelligent, outspoken, thin girl. But now, I am finally starting to fight back against stereotypes, and be myself...this great campaign really reinforces that :)
This is such a great article and I think inspiring for all the young ladies in the world. However, I come to the comments and once again I see that some people are upset because they only showed women and others are upset because they think the article is about bashing men. Not everything is about bashing men and in these times with the INCEL movement so strong we are just trying to lift up women just a little bit. I am sorry for all of you who think women love to just attack men. We don't and these things have been said to women many times.
I don't see why these are female stereotypes. Most can be said about both genders (excluding the kitchen and child one).
Because traditionally when a man talks too much, he is just seen as loquacious. When a man argues, he's just debating. etc etc etc Women who have opinions, argue, have careers, basically just use their own mind have been villainized. They were ruled crazy and locked away, they had their children taken away, they were chastised and ostracised for not being womanly enough. While it may not be as obviously bad anymore, there are many men who think a woman being assertive is just being a hormonal b***h, and will dismiss her just as easily. It is important to change the narrative and the language, to continue to move forward and to be a truly equal society. There should also be posters showing male role models who are capable of more than the 3 accepted male emotions, and emphasize that men in nurturing careers etc are still real men. However, they're choosing to start their narrative with the traditionally dismissed element of their society. There's nothing wrong with that.

I'm gonna be downvoted again, right? People only see what they want to see.
Does this too mean that women will finally stop asking for alimony?? Because, if they plan on kipping their husband's kids, then they should be the ones paying for their child support without bothering the spouse, don't you think? Too many women gets preggo hoping for the guy to maintain a 'love child' that they didn't even asked for.
My father was born in 1910. You would think he would be old fashioned, and misogynistic. He and my mom had 3 girl in the early 30's, my brother in the late forties and me in 1956. I was not exposed to any of that. My dad was a bulldozer operator and took me to work with him. When I told him thats what I wanted to do too. He never batted an eye. Said he would contact the union and check out the school. We weren't ever told where we belonged. What girls should or shouldn't do, well except my mom, no cussing for girls! I never persued my dream. He and my eldest sister got cancer and died the same year. I got derailed. But my point is that not all men are the same. My brother wasn't like that either. I know this is a problem, my sister ran into it daily when she worked for a police dept. She started in early 60's. But she was tough and confident, as my parents raised her. She retired, well known and well liked after 30 yrs. I do dislike the "all men are." they're not.
This kid in my class made a rap song for this math project we had and at the end, he said "unless you're a girl then you belong in the kitchen". This reminded me of that.
Is there something wrong with supporting traditional female roles - like motherhood?. I see no poster supporting stay-at-home Moms.
No problem with stay at home mom, just showing women have more options. I love what what they did, but think they should keep going and show men and women doing more jobs.

Considering this campaign originated in South Africa, where it is a patriarchal society, explains why it was created. You have to always remember the context of where these posts come from.

It probably won't change the opinions of those around her. heck, it probably won't even inspire her that much. But now she knows that there is an alternative. That she can be something other than what people are telling her to be. It doesn't hurt to give people hope, even if they won't take it.
