Skittles Releases White Candies For Pride Month, And Internet’s Reaction Is Not What They Expected
If you walk into your local convenience store and notice that the packs of Skittles have turned white, don’t worry, you’re not tripping out, because for the second year running, Mars has ditched the iconic Skittles rainbow in honor of Pride Month.
“Only one rainbow flag matters this pride. Give the rainbow, taste the rainbow,” explains the back of the white Skittles bag. And as you can see below, it isn’t just the packaging that’s lost its color – the pride Skittles are all white too! Great fun if you like a bit of mystery in your candy; not so much fun if you hate a particular flavor. The vibrant confectionery first ditched its colors for 2016 London Pride. Still, while many people consider it to be a fun and harmless marketing campaign and an attempt to raise social awareness, not everybody agrees, and some have even complained that it’s racist. I'm seriously getting tired of this c**p. Everyone getting all offended for no damn reason "omg they picked white color, white supremacists! They hate blacks!" You can't do or say anything with white lately because you're instantly a racists who thinks "white" is more superior or whatever... Really have to think on what you say or do these days because there will always be someone offended by it, even if you're trying to do good -_-

Actually, all the colors combined make black. Which is why if you black on a sunny day, you're hotter- the color absorbs ALL of the colors. White, however, rejects ALL of the colors. I guess you skipped that day in physics class, huh? Anyway, it's called a marketing ploy. The only reason the skittles aren't black is because people wouldn't wanna eat them supposedly. (I would, but I'm gothic like that.) It's just to sell more candy. I'm unconcerned here about the racial connotations because people are extra sometimes... I don't like that it's supposed to mean inclusiveness in color, but I think the whole message goes over people's heads. Skittles without colors, are just...skittles...and if you couldn't judge until you "tasted" each person, like a skittle, then it'd be harder to judge. But it isn't that simple. People judge on size, shape, and everything else.

To me, white is more a representation to the lack of color. Plus, wouldn't it be a lot more artificial coloring to make black skittles? Just a thought. I don't eat skittles much anyway. I really think the thought behind this was in the right place.

The concept and final product is awesome. The people who made the stuoid comments about this being racist should stop playing the victim card and doing something productive instead. Or now they will say that when a kid is given a blank drawing and is asked to color de image, they will call that racism? Ask a child to color a black or brown page to see what happens.

In color theory, white is all the colors of the rainbow and black is the absence of all color. This was actually quite clever.

a) They do not have a black base coat because psychologically you are less likely to eat it. b) White people are not actually white, and black people are not actually black. c) Racism is institutional bias designed to prevent a race from having equal rights or opportunities- different from racial prejudiced. d) Racism is not just a black problem. e) We should be able to use colors without it being assumed it is about race. f) we should be able to talk about the race issue without pointing fingers and calling each other racist. If someone says something or does something GENUINELY racist- please call them out. But a white person can dislike a black person without it being a race issue, and vice versa.

Anyone who knows about how color works (in an ARTISTIC viewpoint) knows that "white" is the "absence of color" and "black" is "all of the colors" Skittles got it right, celebrating Pride's rainbow by taking AWAY the colors. AKA, using white. This has nothing to do with race, just color theory.

The idea of "colorless" Skittles to explain pride is not intellectually challenging, and the company explained the rationale quite clearly. That is, in fact, a good and harmless marketing idea and the opposite of discriminatory and racist. I´m a graphic designer and for your information, in the printing business, the absence of colour is white. Black is the mixture of all colours. I think that reactions like this only show the absolut lack of an open spirit and a all lot of prejudice. Just as an example if I'm singing in a working sunday "I don´t like sundays" is not because I'm ignorant and don't know "The Boomtown Rats" song lyrics. It´s because it's sunday and I'm working. So don't be ridiculous and loose your preconceptions. Good job Skittles... a brilliant and noble idea. You have my full support. Loved it.

I am saddened and sickened by this. The rainbow is a spreading out of light... showing that light (one thing) is made up of many colors. The "natural state" of light is "white", a blending of all colors. The same is true of humanity... all colors, sizes, shapes, hair and eye colors... one race of humans. Inside, on a basic level, we are all the same no matter what our outside looks like. We want the same things, need the same things. Food and clothing and shelter, to love and be loved. It SICKENS ME at how far this "Social Justice Warrior" movement has gone. We've got people screaming that everything that is white is racist. Skittles, a candy, are racist and white supremacist. What is next? Typing paper is racist? All white animals should be killed because they are racist? Anything made of white stone or painted white must be destroyed, because its racist? All people with pale skin should be killed, because an accident of birth, means they must be racist??

That's not racist. Honestly. I have friends, who are white, telling me how they "hate white people (including themselves)", and it's so not okay. They don't realize that they're actually being racist towards white people. And even worse, many people do it because they'll be seen as racist if they don't, and will then see themselves as racist if they don't. Heck, I've seen white people at rallies chanting "Black lives matter!", and a black man came up and chanted, "All lives matter!", and they immediately receded and stopped supporting what they were. Yes, we should accept everyone. There should be equal representation everywhere. However, is systematically destroying the voice of a people how to gain your own? Why can't we all spread love, until that sort of hate is no more? Lead by example, instead of going with revenge - especially to people who don't deserve it.

I'm Caucasian... white is a silly label as I'm clearly flesh colour not white and that depends how long I'm in the sun I tan quick so I'll stick with Caucasian as a descriptor. I support BLM, not because I believe all lives don't matter, of course all lives matter, however BLM became a cause because so many instances proved that to some people black lives are seen as unimportant. That is wrong. No one denies the importance of "white" lives but when black people, especially young black males are gunned down it is not given the consideration it should be. When the law says there is to be due process for the first step in that process to execute a suspect accused of say selling loose cigarettes, petty theft or driving with a light out and is shot for reaching for the documentation the officer asks for, and then next to nothing is done to redress the situation, I say loud and proud BLACK LIVES MATTER. I do not however believe white skittles are racist.

White is the blending of all colors and is a color. Explanation: Light appears colorless or white. Sunlight is white light that is composed of all the colors of the spectrum. A rainbow is proof. You can't see the colors of sunlight except when atmospheric conditions bend the light rays and create a rainbow. You can also use a prism to demonstrate this. Fact: The sum of all the colors of light add up to white. This is additive color theory. SO, you small minded people that use Skittles campaign for your own idiotic agenda, learn something. I believe that if blacks can say "black pride" and Latinos can say "brown pride" and it's seen as alright and not racist, then it would be okay for a white person to say "white pride" without it getting twisted toward racism. I'm not a white supremesist but I'm proud to be who I am and proud of where I came from and what my family has done. My great grandfather was a German soldier and fled Germany when they started killing Jews because he didn't approve and fought for the US in the First World War. Then my grandfather fraught in the second. Racism is dying off and the some won't let it so they take the littlest thing and twist it just to keep it going. Let go of hate and start loving!

just because a marketing campaign was not thoroughly thought out and failed miserably doesn't mean it was an intentional slight. I'm thinking the idea was that since skittles is widely identified with the rainbow they sincerely wanted to put attention away from the brand and toward the cause. and they did donate to lgbtq (please add relevant knew letters)community. so anyway that's my tyhoughts on the matter.

this is so stupid I can't believe black people are butt hurt over something that is supposed to support the LGBTQ community. Honestly, get your heads out of your asses and get over it. Skittles was trying to support a wonderful community and black people made it about themselves yet again. I know that sounds rude, but if something isn't directed towards you, keep your opinions to yourself. They are not wanted and WILL be ignored.

Folks, NOT everything is about race... and the folks who are griping about the candy being white, for the record you are racist against white people because the candy is white... so just grow up and stop acting like children. You should also note that the bag is white AND BLACK and the *S* is also BLACK. Skittles is noting that NO ONE COLOR MATTERS MORE THAN THE OTHER, so if you can't get behind that, why not shut up?

Black, White, Brown or Red and every other color to describe a race. Unfortunately no full race is going to get along (even within its own). It is up to individuals to love one another (INDIVIDUALS), we can't rely on entire races to get along it will never happen. I live near Detroit and I am white, I see (correction, hear of) white on black and vice versa crime yes. I see (hear of) black on black (and know someone dear to me that was shot, killed and still unsolved), white on white and a lot of other races as well committing crime (murders/beatings/racism) here. But again it is it all up to us as Individuals we can't rely on entire races to come together, it will never happen. We need to love who matters to us, be they Black, Brown, Red, Yellow or White, Gay or Straight. And teach our children (or young people) because they learn from us.

To all of you offended by the skittles being white, got news for you in case you don't know this but when you take away all colors you get white it has nothing to do with racism. Just like if you add all colors you get black. Since Skittles removed the colors of the rainbow from the skittles they are going to be white and that is just the way it is.

A basic science education would help people understand that the combined light waves on the spectrum produce...white light. Simple physics, and there's no politics there at all. Skittles had a great marketing campaign, and white is probably the way to go because it's neutral, not racist. I'd not eat black skittles or black anything...except drinking Coke or Pepsi which I'm not fond of either. They also donate a portion to LGBT groups or whatever, and I'm sure this is made easier with NOT using so many colors or any color at all on the packaging or the product itself. I'd buy these "white racist supremacist skittles" to support lgbt month, to support my curiosity and to p**s of all the people who see "RACIST" everywhere. Usually those very same butthurt people who call people racist are racist themselves. I hope they choke on their stupid agendas. Light has spectrums of color which you can see as a rainbow. When these spectrums come together they turn white. That is why Skittles are white without color. F*****g people need to read a book.

The packaging makes me thing of coloring books, as in pick your own colors and as many as you want. But really, given that if you suck on a skittle, it turns white, so they probably just went with the easiest single color to mass produce

Rainbows aren't about race. It's a symbol of all the different colors coming together to make something beautiful. It's symbolic, not literal. The rainbow represents everyone. That's why I don't really get why brown or black are added because clearly blue, purple, etc weren't representing non-black/brown people. Just like white skittles isn't representing white people. It's Skittles saying focus on Pride and what the rainbow really means during pride. It shouldn't be about candy. Some people just want to see offense and exclusion everywhere they look.

Nope. White is the absence of color. Black is the absorption of all colors. So if you are wanting to remove color, white is the logical choice. Now if someone wants to make it about race, it is just silly. People are not white, people are not black. But they are pale, yellowish, shades of brown and even almost purples. It is a candy.... Not a person. Let's just enjoy the fact the are honoring Pride, even I it is just a marketing move.

Skittles is trying to "give their rainbow to the LGBTQ community" to celebrate gay pride this Pride Month, and people freak out saying that the Skittles company is "racist" because the candies have gone white. Everything is about race nowadays. There cannot be a white or black product without someone pitching in that it's racist. Might as well call the paint company racist for selling white paint, might as well shame the licorice company for selling black licorice. The only other alternative (for what it seems they were aiming for symbolically) would be to have black skittles. Black is the absence of any color at all, physically speaking, so probably represents the wrong thing. The fact we use the terms 'black' and 'white' to refer to human beings (who are neither) is just unfortunate.I get ya #skittles, see what you were trying to do. Good effort!

All they've done is not added the colouring to it, rather than intentionally painted them white in order to give off racist connotations. Dumbest article I've ever read

Here's a little art lesson for the dipwads having a problem with why they made the white skittles and packaging. In the art world white is known as the absence of color, hence the reason they chose it. If everyone could just stop and think, and maybe do a smidgeon of research, they could understand the real reason behind the thought process. And stop making the assumption that it's racism.

white can be interpretated as every color, in rgb or "light" mode, or not a color at all, in cmyk (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) or "print" mode. the package doesnt represent any color, as it is printed in cmyk. But its kind of obvious that the reaccion in front of this campaign was goin to be bad, because the first two readings you get from it are: the lack of variety (represented by the non existing colors), and the additional racism that pretends to represent white as the only "correct" thing, and that has been criticized in a lot of ways before. "Inclusion" could have been represented in many other ways, for example, creating a rainbow colored package that contains all the flavors in it, as mixing everything, from colors to tastes... we are all different, but we are all the same as well.

I think that this is a very thoughtful thing. About the color all I can say is that white is just a color and has something to do with light and spectral composition...or whatever It has nothing to do with the color of somebody's skin - I have never seen someone with WHITE skin. If you draw all color from something, all that is left is white or transparent depending on the material. I am sure that Skittles had no racism in mind when they did that. If you want to see racism in that, feel free to do so, if you are that vain and dying of boredom or just want to get attention.

Skittles aren't coloured in the first place, the shell is. All they did was skip the food colouring, it wasn't an active "let's make them white"; they'd be white regardless without the coloured shell. It's literally a lump of flavoured sugar. I love how upset people are over this though and it will amuse me to the day they stop producing these.

Wow people in the comments really don't get why they're calling this racist... It's White Pride... If you don't know what that means, it's directly tied to the KKK, a group of White Supremacists that hate black people. I don't know if it's really the message that Skittles was intending to send but when I read Skittles go white for Pride month the first thing I thought was Skittles are racist. It didn't even occur to me that this was in support of the LGBT community. Even the praise there's only one rainbow that matters is kind of confusing because not everyone view the rainbow as a gay pride thing and might not realize what that means. Maybe instead of changing the color they should just put the letters LGBTQ on them in place of the usual S to make it more clear what message they're trying to send.

Actually, all the colors combined make black. Which is why if you black on a sunny day, you're hotter- the color absorbs ALL of the colors. White, however, rejects ALL of the colors. I guess you skipped that day in physics class, huh? Anyway, it's called a marketing ploy. The only reason the skittles aren't black is because people wouldn't wanna eat them supposedly. (I would, but I'm gothic like that.) It's just to sell more candy. I'm unconcerned here about the racial connotations because people are extra sometimes... a) They do not have a black base coat because psychologically you are less likely to eat it. b) White people are not actually white, and black people are not actually black. c) Racism is institutional bias designed to prevent a race from having equal rights or opportunities- different from racial prejudiced. d) Racism is not just a black problem. e) We should be able to use colors without it being assumed it is about race. f) we should be able to talk about the race issue without pointing fingers and calling each other racist. If someone says something or does something GENUINELY racist- please call them out. But a white person can dislike a black person without it being a race issue, and vice versa.

That is, in fact, a good and harmless marketing idea and the opposite of discriminatory and racist. I´m a graphic designer and for your information, in the printing business, the absence of colour is white. Black is the mixture of all colours. I think that reactions like this only show the absolut lack of an open spirit and a all lot of prejudice. Just as an example if I'm singing in a working sunday "I don´t like sundays" is not because I'm ignorant and don't know "The Boomtown Rats" song lyrics. It´s because it's sunday and I'm working. I am saddened and sickened by this. The rainbow is a spreading out of light... showing that light (one thing) is made up of many colors. The "natural state" of light is "white", a blending of all colors. The same is true of humanity... all colors, sizes, shapes, hair and eye colors... one race of humans. Inside, on a basic level, we are all the same no matter what our outside looks like. We want the same things, need the same things. Food and clothing and shelter, to love and be loved. That's not racist. Honestly. I have friends, who are white, telling me how they "hate white people (including themselves)", and it's so not okay. They don't realize that they're actually being racist towards white people. And even worse, many people do it because they'll be seen as racist if they don't, and will then see themselves as racist if they don't. Heck, I've seen white people at rallies chanting "Black lives matter!", and a black man came up and chanted, "All lives matter!", and they immediately receded and stopped supporting what they were. Yes, we should accept everyone. There should be equal representation everywhere. However, is systematically destroying the voice of a people how to gain your own? Why can't we all spread love, until that sort of hate is no more? Lead by example, instead of going with revenge - especially to people who don't deserve it.

I'm Caucasian... white is a silly label as I'm clearly flesh colour not white and that depends how long I'm in the sun I tan quick so I'll stick with Caucasian as a descriptor. I support BLM, not because I believe all lives don't matter, of course all lives matter, however BLM became a cause because so many instances proved that to some people black lives are seen as unimportant. That is wrong. No one denies the importance of "white" lives but when black people, especially young black males are gunned down it is not given the consideration it should be. When the law says there is to be due process for the first step in that process to execute a suspect accused of say selling loose cigarettes, petty theft or driving with a light out and is shot for reaching for the documentation the officer asks for, and then next to nothing is done to redress the situation, I say loud and proud BLACK LIVES MATTER. I do not however believe white skittles are racist.

I believe that if blacks can say "black pride" and Latinos can say "brown pride" and it's seen as alright and not racist, then it would be okay for a white person to say "white pride" without it getting twisted toward racism. I'm not a white supremesist but I'm proud to be who I am and proud of where I came from and what my family has done. My great grandfather was a German soldier and fled Germany when they started killing Jews because he didn't approve and fought for the US in the First World War. Then my grandfather fraught in the second. Racism is dying off and the some won't let it so they take the littlest thing and twist it just to keep it going. Let go of hate and start loving!

just because a marketing campaign was not thoroughly thought out and failed miserably doesn't mean it was an intentional slight. Black, White, Brown or Red and every other color to describe a race. Unfortunately no full race is going to get along (even within its own). It is up to individuals to love one another (INDIVIDUALS), we can't rely on entire races to get along it will never happen. I live near Detroit and I am white, I see (correction, hear of) white on black and vice versa crime yes. I see (hear of) black on black (and know someone dear to me that was shot, killed and still unsolved), white on white and a lot of other races as well committing crime (murders/beatings/racism) here. But again it is it all up to us as Individuals we can't rely on entire races to come together, it will never happen. We need to love who matters to us, be they Black, Brown, Red, Yellow or White, Gay or Straight. And teach our children (or young people) because they learn from us.

Skittles had a great marketing campaign, and white is probably the way to go because it's neutral, not racist. I'd not eat black skittles or black anything...except drinking Coke or Pepsi which I'm not fond of either. They also donate a portion to LGBT groups or whatever, and I'm sure this is made easier with NOT using so many colors or any color at all on the packaging or the product itself. I'd buy these "white racist supremacist skittles" to support lgbt month, to support my curiosity and to p**s of all the people who see "RACIST" everywhere. Rainbows aren't about race. It's a symbol of all the different colors coming together to make something beautiful. It's symbolic, not literal. The rainbow represents everyone. That's why I don't really get why brown or black are added because clearly blue, purple, etc weren't representing non-black/brown people. Just like white skittles isn't representing white people. It's Skittles saying focus on Pride and what the rainbow really means during pride. It shouldn't be about candy. Some people just want to see offense and exclusion everywhere they look.

Here's a little art lesson for the dipwads having a problem with why they made the white skittles and packaging. In the art world white is known as the absence of color, hence the reason they chose it. If everyone could just stop and think, and maybe do a smidgeon of research, they could understand the real reason behind the thought process. And stop making the assumption that it's racism.

white can be interpretated as every color, in rgb or "light" mode, or not a color at all, in cmyk (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) or "print" mode. the package doesnt represent any color, as it is printed in cmyk. But its kind of obvious that the reaccion in front of this campaign was goin to be bad, because the first two readings you get from it are: the lack of variety (represented by the non existing colors), and the additional racism that pretends to represent white as the only "correct" thing, and that has been criticized in a lot of ways before. "Inclusion" could have been represented in many other ways, for example, creating a rainbow colored package that contains all the flavors in it, as mixing everything, from colors to tastes... we are all different, but we are all the same as well.

I think that this is a very thoughtful thing. About the color all I can say is that white is just a color and has something to do with light and spectral composition...or whatever It has nothing to do with the color of somebody's skin - I have never seen someone with WHITE skin. If you draw all color from something, all that is left is white or transparent depending on the material. I am sure that Skittles had no racism in mind when they did that. If you want to see racism in that, feel free to do so, if you are that vain and dying of boredom or just want to get attention.

Skittles aren't coloured in the first place, the shell is. All they did was skip the food colouring, it wasn't an active "let's make them white"; they'd be white regardless without the coloured shell. It's literally a lump of flavoured sugar. I love how upset people are over this though and it will amuse me to the day they stop producing these.

Skittle ms are made with dyes or lack there of and not made of melatonin, thus no one can try and parallel these two things. It's comparing apples and oranges. Wow people in the comments really don't get why they're calling this racist... It's White Pride... If you don't know what that means, it's directly tied to the KKK, a group of White Supremacists that hate black people. I don't know if it's really the message that Skittles was intending to send but when I read Skittles go white for Pride month the first thing I thought was Skittles are racist. It didn't even occur to me that this was in support of the LGBT community. Even the praise there's only one rainbow that matters is kind of confusing because not everyone view the rainbow as a gay pride thing and might not realize what that means. Maybe instead of changing the color they should just put the letters LGBTQ on them in place of the usual S to make it more clear what message they're trying to send.
