Hurricane Harvey is currently devastating southeastern Texas, including the city of Houston. Disastrous flooding, winds gusting up to 95 km/h, and even tornadoes have already caused billions of dollars in property damage, and have reportedly claimed at least 9 lives. Since Harvey made landfall at Rockport, Texas, in the early hours of August 26th, the Internet has become inundated with harrowing photos and stories from affected areas - stories of tragedy, rescue, community and generosity. We're bringing you the ones that are making headlines, and stirring hearts, worldwide.

Do you see a fence? Nope. Having lived in TX, fences are better for cattle. If it is foggy or rainy they prevent the cattle from wandering into culverts or rivers. They also find fences to help guide them home if they can't see. Yes, this one specific flooding incident makes fences 'bad' but no fences would be 1000 times worse.

This is pretty sad and all, but if I'm not mistaken POTUS denounced the Paris agreement because global warming is BS and there's no hard scientific proof of this global warming nonsense. Well, there's part of your proof, mr. Trump. Probably more to come. But hey, it's not global warming, it's God's will.

One my best friends went to Houston to visit her mom right before Harvey hit. She's now stuck in her house (house is not flooded but neighborhood is so can't leave) and can't return home for several weeks. Another friend of mine is down there with his boats and jet skis (owns a rental company) and is rescuing ppl. Meanwhile, I'm stuck in Ohio. I've been super sick for about 2 weeks now and I can't do anything but read about what's happening from online 😔 Born and raised 7th generaton texan I know how strong Texans are and that if anything this will bring us closer together. I hope and pray everyone will be ok, stay safe.

I have a question- this happens in US a lot...Why do people still build their homes from wood which get blown away & destroyed so easily? I know someone explained to me that wood is cheaper...But is it worth to keep losing everything every time this s**t happens? Im not from there, and dont know all the details, so please someone explain this to me. (Prayers go out to all people in Texas)

Well, the damage from this storm came from excessive rain and flooding, and so unless you built your house on stilts, nothing would prevent the damage. For wind damage from hurricanes and tornadoes, the answer mostly lies in less expensive construction. You can get a lot more house for the money with wood than with stone or concrete. Although in South Florida after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, building codes were changed to require more concrete. Also, developers are often to blame, and lax codes, basically greed. Everyone's just gambling that the worst won't happen to them.

I lived in Houston for many years. It's a wonderful city, however, there are not enough exits out of the city. When evacuating over 6 million people, things get tough. Some people can't get out even if they want to. Unfortunately they didn't expect the hurricane to act as it did plus they listened to the mayor who said to stay home. This is a good reminder, if your gut tells you something else, listen to it.

Most people opted to stay put in, for example, Rockport even though they were told to evacuate, believing/hoping that it would not be so bad. Everybody knew the hurricane was coming.

No, this is just people taking care and issue of their own. as Im sure they are doing as well. both in taking care of themselves and giving little to no attention to us. yes we are all one, humans, but theres not too much we can do there. But we can do a whole lpt in our own communities. I live in CC and while we got hit, we are incredibly lucky we didnt get it as bad as some. But going through all these have literally brought tears to my eyes because the way people have come together has truely given me a bit of pride and hope in that maybe we all arent as bad as some people like to think and maybe we arent doomed to kill ourselves. it shows that no matter how bleak things may seem that we all do still have some love and compassion in there sme where

Money to Disasters--good people in charge of FEMA and NASA. Restore these people and all others Montana and L.A. are on fire and Irma is headed for Florida, State of Emergency has been declared. Houston did not need a dumb-a*s telling them "have a wonderful time." Forget American Red Cross and their paddy lunches ---8 cents of every dollar goes to victims.

I am flipping through all of these pictures and it is pissing me off that healthy adults (unfortunately particularly women) are ABUSING the fact that these people are here to rescue them. It actually is pissing me off seeing these stupid women who are young and capable of walking through waist deep water and they are being carried by the rescue workers...like ffs..its water..if this man can walk through the water and doesnt dip down and sink bc of a dip in the road or whatever..then why cant u at least walk through it and hold his hand for support as he leads you out?! like ffs...the only people that should be carried by rescue workers are the elderly and little children...not healthy appearing normal male and female adults....These rescue workers are working tirelessly to help those in need, the ones that aren't in danger and/or are capable of walking yourself then do it!

Rescuers are trained in dealing with flood water. They navigate through murky water to avoid debris that can injure you. Flood water is also full of really bad bacteria that can infect a wound or make you incredibly sick if accidentally ingested. Rescuers have the propper gear on to keep them warm and prevent illness, everybody else does not. Use some common sense.

As Climate is changed so parents must teach children to swim well - to be ready for such the disaster! The weather is horrible this year everywhere! Now it is raining and flooding the health resort Sochy, near the Black Sea. The several ctrong floods happened in Europe, South America and China. The central Asia has been tormented with the heat and the drought. Almost all harvest lost. The food will grow in price this year...

The sad thing is.. how many people left their pets in their houses to drown? Or chased them outside and then fled and left their pets behind? I know the people's lives do come first, but like that dog that was tied up. The quote about that dog was "He barked and barked for help as the waters got higher. He was tied up and couldn't escape. Then the barking stopped when the water got too high. So, obviously, this poor, terrified, pooch tied to the pole struggled and was screaming for help and was forced to helplessly watch as the water came up around it to drown.

This is where I live. And the oddness of it all? We didn't even have water in our DRIVEWAY. In the gutter, yes, but not in the driveway. Palm fronds blew down, but no other damage to our home. We never lost power, either. Mama's house in Alvin is fine, but my aunt whose house is less than 100 yards away? Flooded more than a foot deep in the house. I'm VERY thankful that we came through this unscathed.

I just cannot wrap my brain around what is happening in Tx. I don't think anyone who has never lived through something like this can . They now have lost everything except the one thing that is the most important they have their lives . Now everyone who is safe and dry in your homes dig deep and help them out because it could be all of us next time !

These pictures are heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you. If I had millions of dollars, I would donate it all. Did anyone help that poor dog in picture #30? Or that poor dog in picture #2 with his food? My heart is breaking for all of the animals. But I really did not need to see a picture of a dead dog in #58. Think of how the owner is going to feel (if their alive) when they see that picture. And why, knowing a major flood is coming, why in the hell would you tie your pet to a pole and just leave it???

I really would love to donate but I'm on a fixed income & barely keeping my head above water, But All I can offer is my Prayers to all of who are effected by the flood. If I was asked to go down & volunteer my help I'd be first in line. It is A devastating thing for Mother Nature to bring upon so many poor ppl in need. And Animals as well. this shakes me. my heart goes out to these people. suddenly I realize how lucky it is to live in a desert. Sure, there's some flash floods now and then, but it relatively safe from natural disasters

I spoke with a woman who had to flee the flood and almost broke down in tears when she told me she had to leave her two cats. They ran out of her apartment in all the chaos and she couldn't find them. She didn't have a choice :(

Although in South Florida after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, building codes were changed to require more concrete. Also, developers are often to blame, and lax codes, basically greed. Everyone's just gambling that the worst won't happen to them.

I lived in Houston for many years. It's a wonderful city, however, there are not enough exits out of the city. When evacuating over 6 million people, things get tough. Some people can't get out even if they want to. Unfortunately they didn't expect the hurricane to act as it did plus they listened to the mayor who said to stay home. This is a good reminder, if your gut tells you something else, listen to it.

Most people opted to stay put in, for example, Rockport even though they were told to evacuate, believing/hoping that it would not be so bad. Everybody knew the hurricane was coming.

Has anyone noticed that over 1200 people in southern india died this week from flooding? No matter where this type of thing happens it's a tragedy, but i find the lack of attention on that part of the world pretty disgusting

No, this is just people taking care and issue of their own. as Im sure they are doing as well. both in taking care of themselves and giving little to no attention to us. yes we are all one, humans, but theres not too much we can do there. But we can do a whole lpt in our own communities. I live in CC and while we got hit, we are incredibly lucky we didnt get it as bad as some. But going through all these have literally brought tears to my eyes because the way people have come together has truely given me a bit of pride and hope in that maybe we all arent as bad as some people like to think and maybe we arent doomed to kill ourselves. it shows that no matter how bleak things may seem that we all do still have some love and compassion in there sme where

I am flipping through all of these pictures and it is pissing me off that healthy adults (unfortunately particularly women) are ABUSING the fact that these people are here to rescue them. It actually is pissing me off seeing these stupid women who are young and capable of walking through waist deep water and they are being carried by the rescue workers...like ffs..its water..if this man can walk through the water and doesnt dip down and sink bc of a dip in the road or whatever..then why cant u at least walk through it and hold his hand for support as he leads you out?! like ffs...the only people that should be carried by rescue workers are the elderly and little children...not healthy appearing normal male and female adults....These rescue workers are working tirelessly to help those in need, the ones that aren't in danger and/or are capable of walking yourself then do it!

Rescuers are trained in dealing with flood water. They navigate through murky water to avoid debris that can injure you. Flood water is also full of really bad bacteria that can infect a wound or make you incredibly sick if accidentally ingested. Rescuers have the propper gear on to keep them warm and prevent illness, everybody else does not. Use some common sense.

As Climate is changed so parents must teach children to swim well - to be ready for such the disaster! The weather is horrible this year everywhere! Now it is raining and flooding the health resort Sochy, near the Black Sea. The several ctrong floods happened in Europe, South America and China. The central Asia has been tormented with the heat and the drought. Almost all harvest lost. The food will grow in price this year...

The sad thing is.. how many people left their pets in their houses to drown? Or chased them outside and then fled and left their pets behind? I know the people's lives do come first, but like that dog that was tied up. The quote about that dog was "He barked and barked for help as the waters got higher. He was tied up and couldn't escape. Then the barking stopped when the water got too high. So, obviously, this poor, terrified, pooch tied to the pole struggled and was screaming for help and was forced to helplessly watch as the water came up around it to drown.

This is where I live. And the oddness of it all? We didn't even have water in our DRIVEWAY. In the gutter, yes, but not in the driveway. Palm fronds blew down, but no other damage to our home. We never lost power, either. Mama's house in Alvin is fine, but my aunt whose house is less than 100 yards away? Flooded more than a foot deep in the house. I'm VERY thankful that we came through this unscathed.

I just cannot wrap my brain around what is happening in Tx. I don't think anyone who has never lived through something like this can . They now have lost everything except the one thing that is the most important they have their lives . Now everyone who is safe and dry in your homes dig deep and help them out because it could be all of us next time !

the situation there is bad really really bad and the people and families have my prayers and maybe these sites should give these people a little bit more privacy f.x in picture 73 she might have just lost her friend and in my opinion those pictures should not be online but i understand that they are just so people can see how grave the situation is

These pictures are heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you. If I had millions of dollars, I would donate it all. Did anyone help that poor dog in picture #30? Or that poor dog in picture #2 with his food? My heart is breaking for all of the animals. But I really did not need to see a picture of a dead dog in #58. Think of how the owner is going to feel (if their alive) when they see that picture. And why, knowing a major flood is coming, why in the hell would you tie your pet to a pole and just leave it???

I really would love to donate but I'm on a fixed income & barely keeping my head above water, But All I can offer is my Prayers to all of who are effected by the flood. If I was asked to go down & volunteer my help I'd be first in line. It is A devastating thing for Mother Nature to bring upon so many poor ppl in need. And Animals as well. I'm so sorry for all who are in need.

This is pretty sad and all, but if I'm not mistaken POTUS denounced the Paris agreement because global warming is BS and there's no hard scientific proof of this global warming nonsense. this shakes me. my heart goes out to these people. suddenly I realize how lucky it is to live in a desert. Sure, there's some flash floods now and then, but it relatively safe from natural disasters

Living in the Netherlands, I can't imagine how devistating this must be. We get rain and an occasional inch of water in basements or the gutter, but this is terrifying!

I spoke with a woman who had to flee the flood and almost broke down in tears when she told me she had to leave her two cats. They ran out of her apartment in all the chaos and she couldn't find them. She didn't have a choice :(
