With winter just around the corner, I started thinking about making my big kids something warm and cozy to wear while they are out and about. I was reminded of the poncho my grandma made me when I was just a kid. Remember how everyone had a poncho in the ’70s?
This got me feeling nostalgic, so I mentioned making one each for the girls and…I got laughed at! So I set out to prove that I am so awesome I can make something drab very cool.
First I decided on two different colorways for the ponchos. One in blues for the youngest and one in purples. Then I just started crocheting. I had an idea in my head what I wanted the poncho to look like but I didn’t have a pattern. It took me about 6 hours of crocheting and frogging to get a look I loved for the basic square pattern.
(Frogging is a crochet term for when you have to undo the work you have just crocheted because of a mistake or you when you simply just don’t like it… Rip it, Rip it, Rip it! Crocheters say. )
Once I had the square design done I just had to make more. Each poncho is made up of four squares. It took about 3 hours to make each square and I needed 4 for the body of each poncho and 2 more because the girls wanted me to add a hood. That’s 6 per poncho!
This poncho is one of my favorite things to make. All you need is 8 balls of yarn, a few beads for decoration, some time and lots of patience.
I taught myself to crochet when I was about 8. After many years of sitting and watching my grandma stitch away, I was intrigued. Once I figured out how to actually crochet, I was… wait for it… HOOKED! I have had a love affair with crochet ever since. Dolls, toys, clothes, blankets you name it, I can make it. To me, crochet is just another form of sculpture and self-expression.
I am happy to report the girls LOVED their ponchos and they wear them all the time! Yay me! And as more proof of how cool the ponchos really are, I have had several of their friends hint that they’d like me to make them one too. Looks like this mum is cool after all! I named it the ‘BONNIE BOHO PONCHO.
