35 People Who Wanted To Look So Tough, They Ended Up Embarrassing Themselves Completely
If you hear someone say, "I'm not scared of that," or, "I didn't want that promotion anyway," it doesn't necessarily mean they're mentally strong. In fact, there's a good chance it's just a facade.
To illustrate this, let's look at the subreddit which we at Bored Panda call "I Am Very Bad". From gun nuts to overly-protective boyfriends, this online community has plenty of examples to prove that overcompensation can be very, very obvious.
Here are the posts that got the most upvotes from the sub's 1.2 million members.

To learn more about "I Am Very Bad" we contacted its moderators and one of them, u/ergoegthatis, agreed to have a little chat.
"Some of the most popular ['tough' people on the subreddit are the ones who see] injustice in the news (e.g. someone being insulted or bear up), and say, 'If that happened to me I'd so and so and so and so!' With everyone on social media having a platform to air any opinion they have, this is incredibly common," u/ergoegthatis told Bored Panda.
"Also in the US, there are many intense political/social statements related to politics and guns. For some reason, Americans are religiously addicted to expressing their opinions on everything, in every possible way (including car decals)."
And Murdered By Words Of Another Vet
Ah yes, the 'us' and 'them' mentality. Also the result of brainwashing. If someone cuts in line, say something. You don't immediately have to resort to violence like a little coward who can't communicate his feelings like a normal adult. (edited the bad word to coward)
That's because a pussy is a body part that might slightly resemble a mouth, but can't say anything, which would be really advantageous for communication. Please stop using the word pussy as an insult.
Load More Replies...As a Vet myself I have to say this is not a Vet thing it's a @sshole thing.
ASDMSS is *parody.* It's soldiers making fun of the attitudes of drill sargeants.
Load More Replies...From what I've seen, the US military don't treat their soldiers like gods while serving, and I *know* vets weren't treated like gods after retirement at least into the 1970s... so where does this entitlement and superiority come from? Anyone know?
9/11 and the whole “thank you for your service” shít everyone does.
Load More Replies...The only service members who act like that were never service members, got kicked out of the service or served just long enough to get a honorable discharge and thinks they're entitled to the worship of everyone. I have family who served in Vietnam, my dad was an Army MP, his dad was Navy WWII just like my father in law. I have family from the Gulf War and currently serving stateside-fortunately. None of them brag about their service and some forget discounts they can get, like hotels! I worked with a couple younger guys who just got out of the military and were the biggest a-holes. I don't know their discharge status but they were very aggressive and didn't last long. I wish I had joined but what parents who had brothers in Vietnam would want their only daughter to join the military during George HW?😳
Yes, as an Air Force veteran I can tell you he probably didn't last long in service. In the military we have a saying "hurry up and wait". You are always hustling and then waiting around for EVERYTHING. I can't speak for other branches but I can't imagine that this type of hostility and impatience would be tolerated in any branch.
Load More Replies...THANK YOU! My parents, once out of the military... became CIVILIANS WHO HAD SERVED. Get over your entitlement, US military vets. You aren't all that.. I know. I'm your family.
How is it possible to identify you as a marine vet and what makes you more special then the rest of the world !
Probably still walking around with his crew cut hair and some medals
Load More Replies...This whole "I was in the military" crap has to stop. I simply don't care. Does not make you special or automatically provide you with revered status.
So this whole military and vet thing...it is/was a choice. It is right to appreciate you, but you're not entitled to anything because of your personal choice. BTW, I'm reading more about how vets abhor the whole "thank you for your service " so wtf? I'm an RN and started hearing that during the pandemic/now. It's not a selfless act. I get paid well, there are benefits. I'm not entitled to anything. Thanks are always great but, I made my point.
don't tell me...along with his veteran hat he has a red one as well. as a military brat, wife, etc., if any vet would go off on my based on his status of a vet he would get what he wanted - a conflict because, yes...you are now a civilian. kind of reminds me of when i was waiting at the military hospital for an appointment for my son and a woman came in as walk in. there was another military wife at the counter but the woman came up and demanded to be seen. when told she would have to make an appointment unless it was an emergency and needed to go to ER she went off on this poor corpman. she started screaming 'don't you know who i am? don't you know my husband is (enter officer's rank and name)?' and other things similar. after she had finished, expecting to be seen after that spectacle the military wife who was standing there said, ' well, i am third class (name) wife and i have an appointment. besides, you make your living the same way i do: you sleep with a sailor."
Not all soldiers have been saving lives, and not all older people deserve respect
My brother-in-law is a retired Marine. The only thing he expects from his service is the veteran benefits he was promised, like the medical care needed to keep his body functioning after all the damage it received during his time in service. He does not call other people civilians like it's some sort of curse word
You may be ex-military but you're still active duty asshole.
So many things intentionally created to divide us. Or make us think we are somehow better than or more valuable than the next human being. People actually buy into it to. Thinking because your a CEO or military, cop, governor, or doctor. That you are somehow more valuable as a person. Or more deserving of something. It's called humanity and everyone from the homeless person right up to the CEO deserves respect, decency, dignity, love, kindness, healthcare, education, and to be treated well. . This whole world is so awful and I'm tired of people who can't see how heartless and awful they are.
When a 'veteran' talks down about 'civilians' (which most of them tend to) it's with all the condescension of a superior being to a molerat. Maybe what this supposed "Marine" needs is PTSD meds to stop his explosive level of intolerance.
PTSD is a f****ng burden, illness and can feel like a curse AND has nothing to do with the described behaviour!
Load More Replies...His wife hustling him out without buying anything suggests that she's concerned about his anger issues. His threat to be violent to the next stranger suggests that she's right.
Load More Replies...Mmm, no. Once you're military, you never return to the 'civilian' mindset. And as military (former or current), you're automatically part of my 'family' now. Doesn't mean you're a great person or a horrible person, just that we have a strong shared background and mindset. But that doesn't mean that we are permitted to be abusive. I'd be upset too, getting cut in line, but is that really worth going to JAIL for...?
I'm married to a lifer. They usually DON'T call attention to themselves. Don't look for handouts, don't look for recognition. This is embarrassing.
We don't have this blind worship of anyone who has served in the military, and rightly so, this is clearly evident that just because you served doesn't mean you're a good a person and deserve respect, buuuuuullshit to that.
Woah, jumped up super fit guys with fight training, full of their own importance. Just what the world needs right now.
Even serving military personnel in the UK don't have this sense of entitlement.
Umm ... cutting ahead of someone in line is rude regardless of whether that person is a Marine combat veteran, a handicapped child, or an ordinary middle-aged guy.
I was also led to believe even the highest ranking military person is still lower in rank to any civilian. Saying that guy who pushed in font was a d**k.
Actually, being a vet means you can be recalled to active duty at any time. Those who thought they were civilians had a rude awakening at the start of the Gulf War. Also, being a vet provide access to military installations and resources not granted to civilians.
Once a Marine- always a Marine! But regardless, it is not ok to cut in line. You have to speak up for yourself. However, it could've been an honest mistake.
Yeah my entire family are Marines and none of them talk like that.
Load More Replies...If you frequent theme parks, you know about people trying to cut in line. I find facing the person, pointing, and saying firmly and clearly "The line starts back there" has been successful 95% of the time. No need to threaten violence or swear - it just makes YOU look small.
'Excuse me, I was standing here.' 'Excuse me, can't you wait for your turn?' 'Excuse me, the end of the line is over there!' No need to curse and make a drama.
Time you learnt how to speak to people. I don't care if you are the reincarnation of the messiah, being as rude as claimed is just not right and being a vet. although commendable, does not automatically give you the right to be so obnoxious.
That guy carried a gun? Yikes! Threatening to do something bad enough to go to jail because someone took his turn in line?
How about "people shouldn't cut in front of other people." Just saying...
Dude thinks the whole world revolves around him. What I do in those situations is to simply say I was there first. Most people will step aside if you point that out.
I'm not impressed by the masculine toxicity and the inability to simply be assertive. I always cut veterans slack, but you're in the wrong here.
No part of this post including the comments made any difference. Move on. Nobody cares.
Exactly. Let me guess, his wife expects a military discount everywhere, too.
He’s such a “special tough guy” …of course the “civilian” was still wrong for cutting in front of him but that’s not an excuse for him to puff up his chest and act like he’s entitled. My dad was a Marine but he never acted like he was better than everyone else
In my opinion it has nothing to do with your military status....has to do with bad manners on the part of the person that stepped ahead in line.
No... veterans are NOT civilians... they are veterans, they were civilians BEFORE they enlisted, but the changes that take place when becoming a member of the armed forces can never be undone. That being said, there are an awful lot of civilians out there that pretend to be service members and veterans because they think that status brings them some kind of reward... it doesn't. Serving our country is a choice that we make for reasons we don't need to explain to others - we don't do it for recognition, and we certainly don't do it for reward, because military pay is amongst the lowest hourly rate in the world.
Happened with in Sprouts. I was next in line. Cashier next door opens and says: Next in line Please. The dimwitted yuppy wannabes behind me scooted in front of me. I got behind them. I joked about being next until they were paying. I looked at them maniacally straight in the eyes and said: Get the f**k out of here you 2 bit fake yuppies. They ran. Left their change. I hit the parking lot and they screeched their tires to get away. Props to my Marine brother and menopause.
Jumping the queue is considered sacrilegious in Britain at least, i would have murdered anyone that does that, but you don’t hold more rights because you were military, if anything, the whole post paints you as a f****n douchebag, and quite the hot-blooded messy embarrassment to even call yourself a marine 🤦♂️🤦♂️😂
Next is next, and any of us deserve to be next if we're next, but I feel a vet is a vet, not a civiliian. A vet's been there, a civilian has not.
No. We are not civilians. We are military veterans. Most of us can be assertive and not agressive, but some of us had experiences that lead us to go from 0 to Mach 1 in a nano second. This is why it's so important that help is readily available.
My father is a National Guard vet and would never think to behave like this. This wasn't about this guy being a vet, it was about him being an asshole.
Vaping In Front Of A Water Service Vehicle Thinking It's A Cop Car
Even though it's not a cop car, why would it matter if he was vaping in front of one. Is it coz he is possibly under-age or something?
According to the moderator, the subreddit's 'characters' usually overcompensate due to their fear of a scary, unpredictable, and hostile world.
"It depends on society too: we rarely see these ... expressions coming from Europe, the Arab world, Southern and Central America, Russia, China, Japan, etc. America is witnessing social, political, and economic implosions, so this seems to be a way for them to cope with that," they added.
The subreddit's community, on the other hand, is way more diverse. "It's heterogeneous, [and has] got all sorts of people," u/ergoegthatis said. "I don't think there's any common factor in our userbase, except the desire to have fun and laugh at people who take their purported [toughness] to comical levels in public."
A Birthday Well Wish Escalates To ”there Will Be Consequences”
Even My Local Police Department Had To Call Out This Guy's Bulls**t
I'm wondering in this scenario, what's the motivation of criminal nr 1000 to go test the door, when there's already a stack of 999 corpses festering in the spring sunshine?
While acting tough may meet a person's needs in the short term by artificially boosting their ego or by getting others to back off, it's not a good long-term strategy. In fact, one study conducted by psychologists at Rutgers University found that guys who act tough may suffer serious consequences.
The paper, published in The Journal of Health Psychology, found that these men visit doctors less often. They're also less forthcoming about their medical symptoms when they see a male physician (interestingly, these same men were more likely to choose a male doctor because they believe male doctors are more competent than females).

If You Have To Advertise It, It’s Probably Not True
She Always Told Me He Was Jealous But Dang
Researchers suspect that delaying medical appointments and minimizing symptoms could be one of the reasons why men in the US die, on average, five years earlier than women.
If you want to see whether or not you have a tendency to act this way, this article by Inc. provides a 7-point checklist that could help in evaluating yourself.
If you're also putting up a fake exterior that helps you feel superior, consider the toll it may take on your life. Instead, try to invest in building mental strength, so the way you feel on the inside matches how others see you on the outside. As your mental strength increases, your need to act tough decreases.

Too bad we hear more about the f*****g wankers of the male species.
Yes, parents need to think carefully about how they raise their boys. In general, boys often don't get the attention that girls do during childhood, unless it's BAD (Negative) attention. Any child psychologist will tell you that children will do anything to get your attention if you're ignoring them. Often bad behavior is the trigger a parent is most likely to respond to.
Load More Replies...I stopped reading halfway through. I get tired of people that puff their chests out and act all macho. It's old...it's tiring..and it's pointless. Anyone who threatens violence like this just because they can...well you have some serious mental health issues that need to be addressed and you're not impressing anyone. All this shows me is that you are really insecure and you are starved for attention.
So many people are so violent, even if it's just in their heads. It's not healthy if your go-to emotion is anger/rage.
they did some studies where people like this who have underdeveloped forebrains get frustrated with their inability to deal with their problems with reason and logic (i.e. words), so they lash out in violent and aggressive ways very similar to a caveman.

What is wrong with these people? How insecure must one be to carry 3 guns? To threaten to kill anyone for pretty much no reason at all? To believe they are above any laws or proper social behaviour just "cause I lift bro!". Is half of America fresh out of juvenile prison? I understand that most of these pictures are either trolls or like-bait on social media, but some are actual humans in real life.
