Nobody enjoys being cut off or bumped into, yet these things happen all the time — both to and because of us.

Experts say that such behaviors instigate a self-perpetuating cycle, hampering our productivity, our happiness, and our health along the way.

So incivility is like a virus. Contract the stuff, and there's a big chance you can spread it without even consciously wanting to.

Interested in which of its forms are the most common, Reddit user MaximumHemidrive asked others on the platform to share what people say and do without realizing it's actually quite hurtful.

30 People Hold Nothing Back Discussing The Rudest Behaviors They Hate Seeing Asking when you're going to have kids.

My fiancée had a hysterotomy a few years ago because reasons. We're planning to adopt and we're both fine with it. There's enough people in this world and we don't need to make more ourselves. She gets asked a lot when we're planning to have kids and she replies, completely deadpan, "I'm infertile" and the uncomfortable look on their faces when they don't know how to respond gives us both great joy. We hope it helps them think twice before asking someone else. I can't wait to marry that woman.

In a similar situation, I used to be asked why I only had one child. Or told I was "selfish" for only having one. Or, in a slightly more positive way (I guess), "Your daughter is so gorgeous! I hope you're having another!". Yeah, well my daughter is the only surviving baby out of 10 pregnancies. I had 9 first trimester miscarriages, some of which became seriously life-threatening, so I consider myself pretty lucky to have one child, actually.

When I was skinny I was told I needed to eat more. Now that I'm slightly overweight I'm told I need to"lay off the mcCain frozen cakes", in which I haven't eaten those in many years. People just need to stop. Weight is often used as a weapon against someone over an unrelated argument online in my experience. If someone resorts to weight shaming, especially blindly, then they've already lost the argument.

I once had someone call me a stick because of how skinny I was, and then proceeded to say they were jealous, as if that made it any less rude. They didn't realize I had randomly lost 10% of my body weight and I was undergoing a lot of medical testing (including for cancer) to find out why. Thankfully it didn't turn out to be anything severe. Vanity and narcissism aren't the only things that make people thin.

I had a period years ago when I lost a lot of weight. I was out of work for a bit over a month. When I went back to work, I had people commenting about my weight loss. Um, you didn't see me for a while, I was in the hospital for a month. You don't understand that people have weight changes due to medical issues, and medications. There's no way a healthy person can lose a third of their weight in a month without something being wrong

The only time it's appropriate to comment on someone's weight (and you're not that person's doctor) is if they have a specific goal of gaining/losing weight and are succeeding.

I used to be terribly skinny. Seriously, about 1 in 3 people felt the need to tell me how skinny I was. If I got on an elevator with 9 people, 3 of them would have to comment. I had people talking like, "and she actually told her, right to her face, 'well, you're fat.' And I ... Whoa, you're skinny!" And as a guy, skinny is ALMOST as bad as being fat is for a woman. I suck at a lot of sports, but I remember the jaw-dropping discovery when I started to gain some weight that I'm actually naturally pretty good at soccer. Never knew that throughout school, because no-one in anything but a 1-on-1 game ever kicked the ball to me. But while I can't shoot a basketball, or get a baseball over the plate, apparently I can aim a soccer ball with surprising accuracy.

I always think you can figure out how it feels by swapping the person around. If you think for example that hotpants are ok, visualise your dad in them and ask whether they're ok. No, they're not. They're lechy. Now, do the same thought with the above. Swap disabled person with black person. "Oh look how inspirational, a black person in a store!" ... f**k off. So if your gut reaction to the person swap is "ewww gross" then yes, ANY comment on ANY person in that scenario is "eww gross".

I get this, but having just lost 20kg I’m a bit disappointed that people haven’t commented on the loss,or that I’m looking fit/healthy/slim. Am I just permanently a fat person in their eyes and nothing will change the perception?

Saying to a non-native speaker that their english needs improvement or that they don't speak it well. If it's true, they already know that.

This even applies to when you compliment them on their English being good. This only implies that you expected it to be worse and surprised that it is not or that 'their people' are bad at it. The only time it is appropriate is when they themselves initiate the topic of English not being their native toungue or apologize for it being bad.

People used to ask my mom all the time if I was her “real child” cause she’s blonde and I’m brunette lol. So extremely and terribly rude.

I hate compliments like "OH your hair looks so much better now" or "You look so much better now that you've lost weight" or "That paint color is so much better than your last one."
Like thanks for letting me know you thought the things before were hideous.

I get the point, but 'better' doesn't mean the previous was hideous. A cheese & tomato pizza is really good, a pepperoni with extra cheese is much better. And sometimes, such as when people are actively trying to loose weight, they like/want that kind of encouragement.

Someone accomplishes something and they respond, "It's never too late!!" No, dude, just say congrats.

Eh, I usually do the opposite, I usally put myself as example and say: See, it's never to late to start doing [this], I started only 2 years ago. (And still haven't mastered it but I am having fun trying to)

A stranger asking when your baby is due but you’re not pregnant. Why would you ever ask someone that??.

I did that once when I was a young man. I learned my lesson, she wasn't pregnant or very happy with me.
