There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
Pineapple on pizza. It’s delicious, and if you hate it don’t s**t on people who like it.
Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Sleeping with stuffed animals. You’re never too old for that.
The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Honestly, you have every right to think that way, since Islamic governments are not spreading the true image of Islam and most Muslims don't even believe in them being rightful. And the media (doing their job) are consequently presenting the false image as the representation of Islam. please don't confuse the true Islam with the version you see from the countries and the media. Regarding women's rights, Muslims are THE ONLY GROUP who have required actual verbal consent from women before being able to even lay a finger on them; or have treated colored people as equals as others (believing in no difference among humanity in terms of race or gender) for more than 1400 years, where other human beings treated women and the colored as slaves until even the past 100-200 years. Even in these years, they are under various pressures, even in the modern liberal countries. These are the things no one knows about, and you have every right to think that way.
Load More Replies...All religions promote peaceful coexistence. It’s just that people with an agenda cherry-pick passages from religious texts, and use them as a cover to justify their violence, bigotry, greed, and lust for power and control.
The true meaning of Christianity is to respect and help others as you do to yourself. Not kill others if they are different. It is the same meaning with all Christians.
Load More Replies...I cannot agree more. But this does need to come with healthy criticism of religious practices (of any faith not only Islam). Not all Muslims are conservative but (as many other religious groups) many are. It is important to talk about this as well. As soon as we acknowledge that other religious are equally conservative.
a recent scientific poll showed that only 15% of Iran's Muslims are radical... the younger generation wants the older radical people that run the government and everything else to lighten up already... they don't realize it, but the mullahs have lost the younger generation by being unnecessarily strict & hard... someday these old men will go their way... what then?
There are many different sects of religion with various levels of dedication. It's ignorance of those sects that's a problem. It's like asking a Catholic woman who goes to church only on Christmas how many sister wives she has.
Agreed. A few years ago I worked at a fast food place, and someone asked me something about prayer (bible belt). I said I wasn't christian. What was their first horrified assumption? "You're not MUSLIM are you???!!!" Like, wtf. What if I was (I am not. I'm an atheist which is worse in their minds). Just leave people alone.
Try saying ur agnostic, it's about the same as atheist except with confusion and suspicion of satanism 😂
Load More Replies...I'm a Christian and even I think this is true. There are bad people who use religion as a means to an end in every religion. They make the rest of the world look down on that religion and that is wrong for so many reasons.
I once had a really long wait at an airport. I noticed a Muslim man in a corner praying, soon after a stranger walked up to him and got down to pray too. They did their thing and once finished shook hands, took a selfie and went their separate ways. It was heartwarming to see two strangers share something in the moment.
Oh god if they make that movie I'm going to be sick. It's making money in a most despicable fashion 😡 (if you want it here's the link to the petition to stop it: https://www.change.org/p/filmnation-entertainment-shut-down-they-are-us-movie-which-side-lines-victims-of-the-march-15th-terrorist-attack)
Load More Replies...There's always a few batsh1t crazy ones who spoil it for the rest. Extremists bring the hate on themselves, the rest (majority) are people, with their quirks and flaws and wonderfulness and uniqueness.
And the media does nothing to help stop assumptions. It seems like they exacerbate the divisions between religious groups.
Load More Replies...Sorry, but that's not true. Not everywhere. In US, yes, but not in all countries. For example, Spain is very proud of its muslim past and its culture. Even nowadays some muslim, jewish or christian (...or mixed!) traditions are proudly followed and preserved by Spanish people, having or not any religion.
Misunderstood, why, because if you don't know anything about them you can't understand them learn about your fellow man, remember we are all equal.
I have no more or less against the Muslim religion than the Christian religions. But the fundamentalist Muslims who keep their women as slaves can go f**k themselves. Same with fundamentalist Christians, though we don't have whole countries of those who forced the women into slavery at gunpoint.
Agree, universally all religions promote kindness and goodness towards all human
nods. anyone who can find beauty in their own religion, and just....fails to see it in other religions....really can't profess to honor the things they say they believe, i think..
It kills me that Christians s**t on everyone bit nobody more than muslims and to be fair Islam is basically Christianity dressed in the clothing of the peoples culture. We are brothers.
We are. Nobody of value shits on anybody anywhere.
Load More Replies...Don't want to sound racist, but from all the stuff that happens were the Islam is involved it's justified to be suspicious. What many people don't realize is that it isn't only a religion but also a political ideology
Oh yeah, like that's the only religion that a political party has ever twisted *eyes roll right out onto the floor* Islam is a religion. Christianity is also a Religion. Some political parties use a twisted selective view of 'Islam' to justify evil. Some political parties use a twisted selective view of 'Christianity' to justify evil. Remind me....why did the pilgrims flee England? To escape Islam?
Load More Replies...I see there's a lot of work to do for #13. The comment sections are self-evident. I am a muslim woman, working a very stable job, not driving tho because of health issues but my husband drove me around or I get Grab or taxi - and i dont have to ask permission everytime, have my own bank account, and soon going to own a house on my name, not my husband, i contribute actively in society, my in-laws are Christian and I love them to bits, and I try to understand Christian as much as I try to explain Islam to them. I just dont understand the blind hate ... without the curiosity to learn more... i just dont get it...
I have no problems with Muslims. At least they don't come knocking on my door trying to convert me. I'm looking at you, Jehovas witnesses.
All societies have radicals and dangerous ideas. Would be nice if everyone could be peaceful and generous.
Everyone is different. An individual act should not project for a whole group, if it is any form of a believe, or profession.
You wanna know what's nice? I have never had a Muslim person show up on my front door step trying to cram their religion down my neck or piling it in my mailbox.
I had my fair share of Muslim protesters in my hometown trying to do just that. More so than your usual run of the mill JW or Mormons.
Load More Replies...Islam is actually very peaceful religion that encourages meditation and peace of mind but it was wildly misused lately.
From what I have learned about Islam, that sums it up for me. I wish everybody would acknowledge the beauty of Islam and Christianity.
Load More Replies...It's amazing how people who would be horrified at the idea of anti-semitism are casually anti-Islam
Maybe not generalize if you’re not prepared to accept other people’s generalizations as well.
Load More Replies...They are just the villains the media makes them. I know several as close friends. I suggest others try too. They’re just people.
the muslims I've met in the UK are lovely. I'd have to disagree with this one. also, check out the writings of Rumi all about tolerance, peace and compassion.
I was horrified to read the prayers' translation on TV in the Maldives!
I have never understood why people don’t like Muslims, I respect their religion just as I do any other and I only object religion when people are trying to force it upon me
i'm not a big fan of any organized religion these days, but as long as people do no harm to others, and don't proselytize too much, live and let live.
The problem with Islam is that it's not only a religion, it's also a culture, it's a law (sharia), and it regulates every aspect of your life down to how you should use the toilets (I'm not kidding)! Most Muslims don't know their religion well enough to distinguish between what's religion and what is antiquated superstition, or nobody's business but your own. And why don't most Muslims know their religion? Because they don't all speak classic Arabic, and the Quran isn't supposed to be translated (as per Muhammad, who was illiterate). So kids in religious schools learn the Arabic alphabet and learn to "read" the Quran by rote without understanding a word. They have to believe dubious authorities who tell them what the Quran says...
It is not the majority of Muslims who are the problem, they are not. It is the extremists who believe that there should be no other religion.
Are they? Ok. Let's talk. Really, please let's talk. Feels like important thing to do.
F**k all religion and your imaginary friends. No-one is born that way. If you cannot be nice to people or act normal without the threat of eternal damnation or just because god says so there is something wrong with you. So don't use it as an excuse.
I hate to think what would happen if aliens really did come down. They'd better not be black or half the world would go insane, and if they had a god they expected us to worship...what then?
To me, it seems that Muslims are incomparable with almost all ethnic races on this planet.
Reading many of the comments below, I can see that there is a lot of confusion regarding what a religion actually is. Is Islam/Christianity/any religion what is written in the sacred foundational books? Well, many of these were written centuries ago in very specific historical circumstances and locations, in response to very specific cultural crises or issues......even if they do have universal messages. Or is a religion the cumulative tradition that has grown up around these sacred texts? A tradition is a living, changing entity. A text is static. A tradition includes additional texts, commentaries, etc. But it is even richer than that. Because it includes peoples' actions, choices, values--and isn't it really more the case that all of these combined are what a religion is, and what it "teaches"? So, yeah. Every religion includes many loving good people and teachings. And every religion includes some really horrific actors and values. And both extremes are still part of it.
A brief study of the faith will clear up most of this. A deeper study of this faith may make you a better person.
I knew that this post would have the most comments. Gather here if you read every comment. ✌️✌️
You only need to believe in Yourself. In the journey towards the apex, all you need is an indomitable willpower.
Why didn't distance the peaceful members themselves from their violent members?
They're misunderstood even among themselves, these are the real guilty for their "bad fame" around the World.
They are the only religion that espouses mass murder as a form of conversion and encourages their acolytes to blow themselves up...but other than that...death to America!
Seriously??? Do not confuse politics with religion. Murder and suicide are forbidden in Islam. There are radicals in every religion though.
Load More Replies...The religions itself has some AWFUL s**t in it. If you are super devout, you are a d**k. If you just casually take the best parts, the kindest parts, and use them to govern your life? Good on ya.
Really unfair generalizing those who are devout as d***s. I take my Christianity pretty seriously. Can you tell me why that makes me a d**k?
Load More Replies...People fear what they are unfamiliar with and once one group does something radical everyone is lumped into that group. Funny it's not the same way with radical christians
Read carefully and learn that everything applies to every religion. It is EXACTLY like that with Christian fundamentalists ruining the reputation of christiandom.
Load More Replies...Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
There are 2 kinds of people. 1 People who do what the hell they enjoy and don's give a s*** what anybody thinks. 2 People who do what they do, and post and share it everywhere. Once it is out there in the public, the public has a right to respond. Be a 1.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

All of these that where mentioned just remind me how great it is that people enjoy different things. A lot of things I wouldnt learn or hear about if someone didnt introduce me to it. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same, acted the same and liked the same things. Love and embrace our differences but try not to be an asshole if someone is not like you or likes things you dont.

I worked as an hourly worker in some chemical plants & refineries... I got a bachelor's degree in humanities... I was hated everywhere I worked because the workers didn't have any education beyond high school, and they were jealous and offended that I would dare to work in "their plant". They would tell me to my face that I was a fool for working there with a degree. I got tired of telling them that I was making three or four times what I could get with the useless degree...
