We're all about fair pay. But we're also aware of greedy companies exploiting people and cutting corners wherever they can for maximum profit. And while it's ridiculous to pay $5 for a T-shirt, as there's no way in which it could have been made ethically, it's also absurd to pay $140 for insulin in the US.

And it's not just companies selling products. In the last 3 years, rents have increased by 2.61% on average per year, which is 169% faster than the real average wage in the US. Also, in the last decade, rent inflation outpaced currency inflation by 40.7%. And it feels like we can do nothing but watch. One Reddit user, Coach_Carter_on_DVD, asked people what things are so overpriced, it sounds (and in most cases should be) illegal. The users were eager to vent about the most insanely expensive things, with prices that have no explanation but disgusting greed.

Over 21.2k comments later, Bored Panda selected the most popular responses on this topic. And even though they're infuriating, we hope that they can also serve some educational purpose. Maybe you've been paying this insane amount of money without ever thinking about how unfair it is, or maybe they will encourage you to take action, vote for politicians who are doing something about the cause, and look for cheaper and more ethical alternatives. Either way, don't forget to upvote your favorites, and be sure to share anything infuriatingly overpriced that we missed on this list!

Looking through this list, one thing sticks out: pharmaceuticals and everything medical is over the top expensive in the USA. I can't understand why anyone still wants to live there.

Someone Asks People "What Is Criminally Overpriced?" And Here's 35 Insightful Answers Human pharmaceuticals. My dog needed a chelation medication that my vet specifically said was on the pricy side but recommended a pharmacy that she worked with. I called with prescription in hand, and they quoted $3,000+ for a month’s supply. Then the rep stated they accidentally read the cost for humans. Dog cost was actually $60. Same dosage, same pill count, but adding chicken flavor and putting a little dog on the label dropped the price 98%.

According to Hitched.co.uk, the average cost of a wedding in the UK is £17,300. This is excluding the honeymoon, which can add a few thousand to the bill. So, basically, marriages begin with unnecessary debt.

Nice dress, nice suit, couple friends or family members, and a trip to the courthouse is all you need. I was never one of those little girls who drooled over Brides Magazine, and actually liked the idea of eloping. To me, the marriage is the important part, not the wedding. When planning my own marriage, I kept it simple and got married at the local courthouse. In May 2023, we will celebrate 22 years together. How long do most people who have the most ridiculously expensive weddings stay together?

I don't know why people chose to spend so much though when they can't afford it. We did ours for £2k. We cut costs by asking a couple of guests with half decent cameras to do the photos, bought bigass Colin the Caterpillar wedding cakes (yes they exist) and hired an ice cream van to come to the reception venue and serve some ice cream for dessert after the buffet. No frills but still one of the best days of our lives without going into major debt.

The reason for this is solely the fault of the customer. I worked as an assistant to a wedding DJ during college. He was a phenomenal DJ, but because it was not his primary source of income, he charged less than the prevailing rate at the time. He eventually raised his rate because so many people told him they hired a more expensive DJ, simply because they assumed the more expensive DJ was better because they charged more. No one wants to look cheap on their wedding day.

I think if most brides goes back to family "backyard" weddings then there shouldn't be costly overpriced weddings. If you look at the unnecessary c**p that most brides want, then I have no sympathy. Basically, the bride, or even family members, wil make or help with dress. The one member with the bigger garden will host, and family, friends and neighbors all help with decorations and food. Honeymoon is a weekend away, to some local place. The couple start out debt free , and once home family will send food over for up to a month.

Easy to cut costs on this one. I made the invites on my computer, all the flowers were silk, my cake was pretty but plain and kept the guest list down. This is a big one. You don't have to invite everyone. You can have an inexpensive wedding.

The other side of the big wedding rip off: for 20 odd years I’ve fronted various bands and always refused to jack up our price just because it was a wedding, so our asking price was the same as we’d charge the local bar or music venue (we’re doing the same job and the newlyweds are being ripped off left, right and centre already). Subsequently we got… FEWER bookings because people assumed we must be cheaper because we were rubbish. People are stupid.

This is why I would want a small wedding, I would make the food, set up decorations, pick the music, choose a public space, and tell everyone that if they wanna dress fancy, that's fine, but it's only my fiance and I that would be formal otherwise. The only thing I would want to splurge on a bit is the cake.

I disagree. It’s a high risk for a vendor to be involved in a wedding. That risk is reflected in the price tag. Dealing with Bridezillas for a living has got to be one of the hardest jobs there is, and should be compensated accordingly. Until we as a society get over the idea that your wedding is something you get to mistreat other people over, wedding vendors should be paid very well.

On a small scale? Hummus. Seems like everywhere in the US, a small tub of hummus is like $5 or more and marketed like it's some kind of exotic, bougie foreign condiment.

Dude, hummus costs nothing to make, I would almost wager it's cheaper to make than ketchup. And it takes almost no time. You pretty much throw s**t in a blender and you're done. I had some friends over, and one of my friends didn't believe me. I walked into the kitchen and 10 mins later walked out with a massive bowl of hummus that just about everyone agreed was the best hummus they'd ever had (because they'd only ever had storebought c**p).

It's super cheap, super easy, and I promise you, your homemade hummus will likely taste better than that Sabra b******t.

Not the cheapest, but Sleep Number or other inflated mattresses don’t have springs to wear down and sag. Springs are the parts that wear, so eliminate them. Used to be able to flip a mattress head to toe and also bottom to top. Now like a lot of couch cushions only one side is finished. Cutting your wear in half. I have a couple Sleep Numbers pushing 20 years with no issues. (Or leaks) Even the 3 foot tall cheap Amazon inflatables give you your money's worth.

I remember as a young parent in the 80s thinking $5 a can was so expensive. I see it now and think how glad I am I do not have to purchase it.

Problem is, the child minder needs to be paid a decent wage. I agree that some places charge way too much, however this is your child. Surely you want to pay the minder a living wage at least so you don't need to worry about the standard..

Except when Covid was rampant and we were all told to stay home and not even drive anywhere cause we might stop to use a public restroom or have to go in a gas station to buy gas...then it was over half the price it is now....odd........*edit* my point is that gas (like lots of stuff we rely on) doesn't NEED to be that high in price. It's not priced that way because it costs that much to refine it, or bring it to consumers, it is priced high because someone is willing (must) pay that much. That was my point...not a conspiracy theory or whatever Bacon Bit thinks I am talking about.

Gluten free food, especially since you generally get less of it than the gluten version.

Oh yessss. I tend to buy lots of healthy vegetables, then when I am hungry I will eat "the good stuff" first...like chips and nachos, so the lettuce can 'age' (read rot). I learned to buy the live boston stuff. I've had a head alive for much longer then I care to admit in my fridge. Now it just feels wrong to eat her (Hedda), since Heddas been part of the family for so long now....
