You're kinda doing the same thing he did though, by calling her skin unusual. There's nothing unusaul about her skin. And I totally get that he might not have meant to offend, intent matters, good for him I guess. But at the same time, that's also 1 reason why racism still exists, and is so rampant. Because people like to make excuses...eg It was just a joke, I meant no harm, you have no sense of humour...And people get away with this. Maybe try thinking about what it might be like to be a poc, and called a freak of nature. Like there's something wrong with you, and you aren't normal...Words mean something.

I appreciate your thoughtful reply instead of just reacting emotionally. And maybe you're right; I personally did not read what he said as a negative. Bad choice of words, yes, but within a positive context. I saw it the same as telling someone something is 'wicked'-- not literal. We can't control how others ingest what we say. So people should be more careful and I hope he doesn't truly mean she is a freak. My personal feeling is that she is a person who puts herself on the public stage in a career that invites commentary. And it was a man who was not choosing his words that carefully. I don't ask anyone to agree with me, but I can't agree with someone being fired for that.

It's easy for people who haven't had to deal with racism since they were born, to dismiss this as just bad wording. Maybe it was, I really don't know. Lots of times when poc try to speak up and talk about the many degrading, hurtful words spewed at them... they get dismissed, told they're overreacting, and they need to get over it. Wasn't aware I was whining- in fact I think i've been pretty reasonable. I have 2 different colored eyes and it is a freak-of-nature because it's different. I think it's cool to be a freak of nature, maybe you take it a different way but the issue is really intent. I think the INTENTION of what the man said was in the same vein--that it's cool and unique! Like saying something is wicked. It doesn't mean I think you're evil, it means it's crazy amazing. I'm certainly not thinking about how 'horrible' it is when I've been a victim of real, actual misogyny before. But it's really up to her whether or not she's offended. I just don't think someone else misinterpreting something I intended to be a compliment should cost someone their job. I'm sure if we pick apart everything you've ever said, we'll find something that could be interpreted differently than you intended and I don't think you should be punished for MY interpretation of it. It's about intent.

No, Kate. Do not call a black woman a "freak of nature" due to the blackness of her skin, whether you mean it as "cool and unique" (just SAY THAT) or not. I am sorry you have been a victim of "real, actual misogyny"...I have too...but since I am both a woman AND black...I have a bit of a different perspective about this than you seem to. Perhaps it is YOU who should listen to US and learn why we may be offended at being called a "freak" due to the darkness of our skin. Sometimes intentions are irrelevant. You dont mind being called a freak due to your eye color, great. Your eye color has not played a hand in your dehumanization, oppression or discrimination...HER skin HAS. Very different contexts. I am in agreement with you. I thought his comment was him being in awe of her beauty and uniqueness. But what do I know. What I found curious was the number of people in these comments who were offended by his words, yet found it perfectly acceptable to make fun of his "whiteness". Doing so makes it seem as though his choice of verbiage was only deemed offensive because of her color/race. To me, that was far more offensive than anything he said.

Hi, isn't Freak Of Nature in this context a statement of her uniqueness? I don't think the original statement was intended to offend,it seemed quite positive too me. Obviously a lot of people seem to be offended, I'm not one of them.

@Yelling: As a black woman myself, PLEASE do not refer to my dark skin as a "freak of nature" whether you are being "postive" or not. NO, we do NOT like it. There are PLENTY of other things you may call a beautiful woman, calling her skin a freak of nature is not a wise one. It is VERY cringe and uncomfortable.
