30 Things That Are Pretty Much Universally Hated By Most People For No Good Reason
We know, we know, it’s super cool to hate stuff. But we feel like it takes a lot outta you, emotionally. Sometimes, it’s refreshing to focus on the positives in life. Taking a step back, and weighing things in your mind in a balanced way, can grant you a new perspective in life.
That’s where one viral r/AskReddit thread comes in. Redditors from all walks of life shared their opinions about which people and things are hated “for no reason.” Check out what they said below, and upvote the posts that you agree with, Pandas. If you’d like to share your opinions on what things really get a ton of undeserved criticism, drop by the comments and let us and all the other Pandas know.
Pssst, Pandas, when you’re done with this list, we’ve got another post about all the things that (according to some on the internet) don’t deserve hate right over here. Grab yourself a mug of tea or a cup of coffee and check it out.
Bored Panda got in touch with Mike Sington, an entertainment, pop culture, and lifestyle expert from LA, to get his thoughts about hate on social media, why negative news wins out over positivity, and why people enjoy seeing celebrities fall. He also shared his opinion about a star who'd fallen from grace but later rose back up. Scroll down for our full interview with Mike, Pandas!

Black cats. Superstition isnt a reason to hate them. They are so frikin cute like the others
BLACK CATS ARE THE BEST!! They are cute, and cuddly and sweet and I'm pretty sure they don't even know what color fur they have! They are just cats. ♥
Entertainment and pop culture expert Mike, aka Hollywood's Ultimate Insider, told Bored Panda that people enjoy hating individuals, things, and trends on social media because mob mentality is at play.
"People enjoy being part of a gang that can pile on, and hate things, on social media. Plus it can be done anonymously, from behind a screen, in the comfort of your home," he explained.
“Basic” women. Let women like things even if they are commonly liked and mainstream. It’s not hurting anybody that a large group of women enjoy pumpkin spice lattes or watch reality TV or enjoy taking a trip to target. It makes them happy, so why should it annoy so many other people?
Because those people doing the complaining desperately want to be special.
Building lego sets according to the instructions. People would always s**t on me for "not using my imagination" and "ruining what the sets could be.' M**********r I paid $50 for a spaceship, so let me build my goddamn spaceship!
If it was meant that you only use your imagination then they wouldn't include instructions. The main reason to buy themed packs is to build what it depicts, otherwise just buy generic (booster?) packs.
"It’s much harder for positive, wholesome news to stand out. The negative tends to upset us or anger us, which grabs our attention viscerally."
Entertainment expert Mike said that fans tend to look up to celebrities, and some even put them on a pedestal.
"So when they fall from grace and mess up, there’s almost a sense of relief. It can be enjoyable to some people because the celebrity becomes more relatable. People realize things can go wrong in a celebrity’s life, so they’re really not that different from myself," the expert said.
Wile E. Coyote. Personally I hope he blows the Road Runner to pieces.
Same! Also I want Tom to catch Jerry and make him suffer as much as he has
Immigrants. One of the arguments I’ve heard, “they are taking our jobs!” I came to your country after leaving my family behind, paying thrice the tuition fees for the same education, paying health insurance which is free to you, and at a disadvantage generally. Still you can’t reach the level of skill required, you’re still mad immigrants are taking your job?
It’s like immigrants work twice as hard to be recognised as just as mediocre as you
Remember, no immigrant has ever "taken" anyone's job. It was the boss who hired an immigrant they could likely pay less. I'm sure they're delighted that you're blaming the immigrant, and not them.
Feminist. Have never met one who did anything remotely annoying. Yet the internet tells me they are everywhere pushing crazy things. I keep seeing them compared to Nazis, incels and other extremists groups. The only examples I ever see are strawman Twitter posts or hypotheticals.
Like in everything there are a few crazy ones out there, and like in everything the f*****g dumbest ones are also the loudest, personaly i'm all in favor of iqual rights for both genders.
In Mike's opinion, probably the best example of a celebrity who fell from grace but was later vindicated is Robert Downey Jr.
"He had crashed and burned, and his career hit rock bottom," the entertainment expert said. "Everyone thought it was completely over for him, but he completely turned his life around and reached extraordinary professional success, reaching the peaks of Hollywood stardom."
“Boomers.” The stereotype that they’re all doing well and are entitled snots is so untrue. The stereotype exists because privileged snots make the most noise. Plenty are on fixed incomes barely able to feed themselves. Watch Nomadland.
Android phones. Does Apple pay y'all to be this annoying?
Oh, it’s definitely fun to grumble about something or other, and spend a good minute fuming about the state of the world and that darn [insert least favorite public figure and/or celebrity]. Most of us enjoy letting off a bit of steam and complaining about this and that. It’s the national pastime in many a country.
However, holding on to all of that hate, constantly living with so much anger, is really an awful way to treat your body and mind. Not to mention that you might make your friends and loved ones reconsider spending time in your company if all you do is moan about everything. There’s a golden balance to be found between being a serial Hater-of-all-Things and someone who’s so happy-go-lucky that they close their eyes to legitimate flaws in people, trends, and things.
cosplay. it’s just makeup? and acting? literally everyone does it on halloween but once you put a name to it it’s “weird”? fr it’s just an art form sure some people can be cringey but the actual art itself isn’t
Furries are the same thing, but folks love to pick on them. I always say "it's just like cosplay - for FUN". (Obligatory not a furry, but tested the waters when I was young & am an artist, so I know quite a few).
Guys liking “feminine” things. I grew up in Vietnam and lived there until the age of 15. I’m a guy who played dolls and house with my elder sister (who is 6 years my senior) when I was 5-6 and subsequently received so much flak and jeering from fellow elementary classmates (both boys & girls) as well as homeroom teachers after I accidentally blurted out about my “abnormal” playing activities to the world (or my small world).
Luckily, my parents just let me be.
My dad later told me to not reveal my interests to anyone whom I do not know well out of concern that I might be bullied. He personally bought me a Sailor Moon action figure.
Why are girls "allowed" to play with "boys" toys but boys can't play with girls' toys?
Owning a plushie as a an adult. Maybe not as hated for women, but for guys it's so toxic. My penguin plush is the key pillar of my emotional support, and that s**t is scarce enough as it is.
Professor Suzanne Degges-White, from Northern Illinois University, recently explained to Bored Panda why we’re drawn more to the negative than the positive in the news. The licensed counselor also shared exactly how too much anger can harm us in a very real way.
“Constant anger can lead to metabolic diseases, cardiovascular problems, and digestive issues. For some people, health concerns are the reason that they may learn to let go of anger,” the professor warned.
“While being angry can lead to social change and begin to topple barriers and other aspects of injustice, we also know that anger isn't going to be the best choice to build alliances or convince others of the need for change. Finding common ground is essential in making true, collaborative change. This requires us to let go of anger, whether that is finding a way to sublimate it or overcome it, or just put it aside for the time being,” she said.
Actors because of the characters they played. I read that the woman who played Brian Cranston's wife on Breaking Bad still gets hate mail.
George R.R. Martin congratulated Jack Gleeson: Joffrey Baratheon for his performance
Poor people
some idiots think people choose to be poor...."give $100 to a rich he invest. give 100 to a poor he spend..." or " its about prioritizion. spend 2-3 hours a day to learn new skills instead of sleeping"...
Guy Fieri
Dude has donated millions to charity and done phenomenal things for the world but because he has spiked blond hair and is a meme people hate on him
As for why we enjoy hearing negative things more than wholesome stories, well, we’re hardwired that way.
“When it comes to hearing information about the darker aspects of humanity, our brains experience greater stimulation when we hear stories of depravity than of kindness. It also has a ‘feel-good aspect’ for some folks as it normalizes and minimizes their own dark aspects or negative traits,” the professor explained to Bored Panda.
“Whether it's greed, anger, promiscuity, and so on, when we hear just how bad someone else has been, it can make us feel better about our own tendencies towards the dark side traits. It also lets us imagine vicariously what it would be like to be ‘that bad. It's kind of like watching all the true crime shows—we enjoy being scared, we enjoy seeing into the minds of people doing things we never would, and it's exciting and novel to see just how far people can go in terms of their dark sides.”
Gingers. South Park made my life a living hell in high school.
Pumpkin spice lattes. It’s a fun fall drink and if it makes people happy, that’s awesome! Mocking people for liking a certain beverage is just weird and mean for no reason. And drinking black coffee does not make you hardcore.
My problem is that the pumpkin spice aroma (smell) can be everywhere and it makes my eyes water and is nauseating. The absolute worst "public stink" for me is the strong cinnamon found on all the pinecones and brooms at the entry to craft stores - these physically give me a headache and makes me sick.
Prebuilt gaming PCs.
I’ll pay a few hundred extra bucks to not have to deal with the hassle of finding all the parts I need, waiting for them all to arrive, assembling them, having something not work, troubleshooting for six hours to figure out what’s not working, returning that part and waiting for the replacement, assembling with that part, realizing another part wasn’t working right, then…
Basically anything teenage girls are into at the time. It's just misogyny, y'all.
The music they like, think Beiber, One Direction etc - Movies and Books - think, Twilight - If a teenage girl likes 'male dominated' interests - sport, gaming, anime, coding - she's a 'pick me' and doing it for the male attention - if she likes being fem (makeup, fashion, etc) she's vacuous...and on it goes. You'll be hard pressed finding something that's 'acceptable' for a teen girl to be into.j
Load More Replies...Just remember that The Beatles were disparaged for years because their fanbase was teen girls. Then all these blowhard guys are "Actually, they're great musicians-" because surely the girls didn't care about the MUSIC, just the cute boys. We needed MEN to 'splain that the music part was good, too. Insert copious eye-rolling, because girls understand good music, FFS.
I don't think this is people being misogynistic, I think it's just grown adults not liking the same things as young women. I mean, I am not into most things Teenage Boys are into, either, its actually pretty normal to have different interests when you age >>
Agreed. And if teenage girls are into something that these guys like too, they must be "fake fan".
“Just because I did exactly the same thing only with different specifics at your age, doesn’t mean it’s not absolutely UNACCEPTABLE now!” … Say what? We’ve all been like that - you just forgot. Chill out, buy them the accessories that are life or death important at the moment and try to keep in mind that nobody remains a teenager forever but everybody was one. Come on. Did you prefer wine tasting, blue cheese and goddamned Stravinsky when you were fifteen? I didn’t think so.
Mostly disgust, its like looking at stereotype for this month: they massively like the same thing, for a short period of time. And dont get me started with Narcissism... *thats* what most people hate.
I have 2 daughters, and it drives me insane. My youngest knows this and exacerbates it. In the end though it makes her happy so I go along with it
maybe we don’t i just think that my sister should be able to wear nike or crop tops without being called basic and literally bullied if she wears anything else omg
Load More Replies...Well that was one ginormous stereotype if I ever saw one...
Load More Replies...Emos and goths
Ah, yes, another way to minimise teens and teen girls' feelings. Then again, us Gen X-ers think we perfected emo and goth anyway, so hit us up if you want to know how to light your 99c black Maybelline eyeliner so it melts and smudges just right.
New Music.
A ton (not all) people think their generation's music was better than whatever is current.
It is hard to accept that your teenage music sucked to the generation before. It is a cycle and the wheels keep on turning.
I think the problem is; new music hasn't been sorted through yet, because, well, it's new. So, yeah, sure, there's lots of bad stuff. But there's also tons of good stuff too. The stuff that's older, the junk doesn't tend to get played anymore. So, it's usually all the best stuff of that decade. I think there's also a nostalgia factor as well.
Gen Z. Yeah, they do some cringy sh*t, but I have peers in their 30’s and 40’s who also do some cringy s**t.
Chris Pratt. I'll never understand why Twitter progressives hate him so much. "He's part of a homophobic church" they say. But you know who else is? AOC and Joe Biden. "He didn't endorse Biden so he must be a Trump supporter." I can't understand how anyone could possibly think this makes sense when he literally donated money to Obama in 2012.
I don't get the whole "if you're not with us you're against us" sh!t. There's a middle ground, you know.
Ed Sheeran
what's wrong with him? Poor guy has become a meme just because he's a redhead and the song Shape of You
I'm sure when he feels sad from all the hate comments, he just takes a dive at his pool full of coins, scrooge mcduck style
Toyota Prius. It's just a car.
If someone is not hurting themselves or anyone else. Let them be who they are, let them do the stuff they want to do. If someone else is doing something doesn't mean you have to. So let people listen to boybands, eat cilantro and wear fur suits, it is a harmless thing that makes them happy.
It does strike me odd that all of humanity has silently agreed to hate specific people
Well in the case of Jabba the Putz, it's well-deserved.
Load More Replies...I'm a boomer, gays weren't on the scene when I was growing up, so I did have to adjust some ideas. But it wasn't that difficult. I'm straight, but why should I care if someone isn't? People should focus on the important issues threatening civilization, like right wing terrorists or wearing black socks with sandals.
There are always things to question, but you can do so without insulting people. We need to interrogate the abuse depicted as romantic in Twilight and its inspo spin-offs, like Fifty Shades and After and 365 whatevers. But that can be done easily without putting down an entire reading demographic or gender.
Every week, there's group B who are so irritated with what group A does that they have to post it on the internet. Do they really think group A is gonna suddenly stop doing those things just because they complain? It all makes me wonder what kind of desperately judgy lives they live --- just for a moment.
I think it's a cycle. First, it's popular. Then a few people get tired of seeing it everywhere and make a few funny comments or whatever. Then a lot of people start agreeing. Lastly, people are like wait, it's not so bad. I'm not sure if most of these are really "hated" except by the most extreme.
This whole post is just criticizing people for having an opinion that's not yours. Yuck!
