Today, on January 20th, 5.46% of 2024 will have passed. However, some people have already run out of luck this year.
So in order to remind you that we always have to expect the unexpected, we put together a collection of unfortunate pictures, depicting folks' struggles with the weather, technology, cars, and pretty much every other facet of the modern world.
I guess it's true what they say: life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.
Continue scrolling to check out the images and don't miss the chat we had with Manhattan psychotherapist and performance coach Jonathan Alpert — you'll find it in between the mishaps.

Got Off Work To No Road Home
There’s a hit country song in this. No road home. This is worse than a lot of the ones that came before.
Worked 12 Hours Cleaning Toilets And Can’t Take A Shower Because Our Water Smells Like Feces
"When such things happen to us, we have to fight the thought that the universe has conspired against us. Only once we come to terms with its indifference do we realize that we have only ourselves to rely on.
"In the face of difficulty, those who maintain a positive attitude and don't let themselves be defined by a negative event end up feeling and doing best in the long run," psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert, who's worked in a hospital emergency department, academia, a corporate setting, and even did a brief stint at the FBI before going into private practice, told Bored Panda.
"Know that you are bigger and stronger than one rejection or a negative situation," the author of 'Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days' added.

See The Blue Light? Yeah Thats My House
Bloomsburg University philosophy professor Steven Hales agrees that luck is a matter of perspective.
For one of his studies, Hales and experimental psychologist Jennifer Johnson tested the hypothesis that optimists are more likely to see other people's experiences as lucky, while pessimists focus on misfortune in the same set of facts.
They used real-life stories of "ambiguous luck"—for instance, a Japanese man who survived the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II, practically unscathed, and lived a long life, and an American soldier who had a rocket-propelled grenade, which did not explode, lodged in his abdomen. Both men survived horrific experiences, which makes them lucky—unless you think that the fact that bad things happened to them at all makes them unlucky.

Starting The New Year With A Collapsed Lung. At Least It Should All Be Uphill From Here
To assess the relationship between personality traits and perceptions of fortune, Hales and Johnson gave study participants a commonly used psychological assessment called the Life Orientation Test. With this, the researchers determined the extent to which subjects were optimists or pessimists.
The participants then rated the luck of people in ambiguous real-life stories as unlucky, somewhat unlucky, somewhat lucky, or lucky.

That is quite a bit a snow. I hope all stay safe and warm. I'm in the north east US and we are currently enduring sub zero temperatures, for the next couple days. Stay safe and warm.
Just Got To Our Hotel… At Least They Left The Lug Nuts
The researchers found "a significant positive correlation" between the subjects' level of optimism and how lucky they thought others were.
"One of the things this means is that the more optimistic you are, the more you think others are lucky. If you are more of a pessimist, you’re likelier to see others as suffering bad luck,” Hales wrote.

Anyone in the factory or store could have scanned the picture on the package, which the manufacturer should have blanked out or used a fake image. I'd say they owe you a new, unscanned one.
But while luck is subjective, uncertainty isn't and it follows us every day.
"Certainty provides predictability and the feeling of control. When we aren't sure how things will go and what the outcomes [are going to be], our brains tend to create endings as a way to gain control," Jonathan Alpert explained. "The problem with this sometimes is that it is not always accurate."

Good Friend Of Two Years Ends Friendship
"For example, a boy wants to ask a girl out on a date, and because he's uncertain, his mind goes to the worst possible outcome (a girl like her will never say yes to a guy like me). This then affects his confidence, creates anxiety, and leads to overall discomfort."
The solution, according to Alpert, is to "stick to what you know to be true and what you actually have control over."
In the boy's case, he has no idea that the girl will say no, so he has full control over how he conducts himself and what he says but not the response he receives.

So even if life throws you a curveball similar to the ones in these pictures, try to "stick with fact over fiction and what you have control over," Alpert suggested.
"For example, you can't control the weather but you can control how you deal with it or prepare for it, e.g. bring an umbrella!"

Generally I'd agree buuuuut if you wait until the cake is skin temp and then put buttercream on it you get a lovely, rich, decadent, fudgy rivers in the cake 🍰
Load More Replies...You never put icing on a hot cake. It melts and the layers slide. Duh. You should have cooled the layers in the fridge and THEN iced it. This is ok you, not 2024.
So, I'm thinking- salvagable.... it didn't hit the floor, right? Just take out, let cool, refrost... I'd eat it, anyway.

I nearly flunked both my art exams because of the universe hating me. The quack dermatologist wasted 2 hours of my life with things unrelated to the appointment. A mosquito kept me up till beyond midnight. I walked into the edge of a door while sleepy, I forgot to bring a change of clothes for a school function, the coconut oil at home now has fungus in it. They cut off the gas to our house. All of this started happening after New Years
had to put my cat down yesterday. she had seizures and would bleed everywhere. she was a mean cat after the seizures, and we really think that she was suffering. i hope shes at peace now and that she'll wait for me when i arrive.
So sorry to hear about your cat! A couple years ago my cat succumbed to a mysterious and sudden illness. The vets did their best, but in the end they had to put her down. RIP, Aida.
Load More Replies...My 7 month old fridge died. I lost my insurance because they changed the plan and I no longer qualified. Havent had water for two weeks. Cant get to the doctor due to weather. Whole family has the flu. And my stomach issues are pretty severe right now. How's everyone else?
On my first day back at work after being off for new years, a heavy hinged lid outside my job blew shut from winds and smashed two of my fingers. Nothing broke and I didn't need to take time off to heal even though I had fat purple fingers for nearly a week Then 13 days later at work, I slipped on ice and fell down the metal steps. No breaks, but man. My lower back and butt are severly bruised. 6 days later, I still can't walk, sit, stand, or lie down without a pain that feels like a dagger by my tailbone.
I was on a cruise for the beginning of the year and on my way out I slipped and broke a bone for the first time... and i've waitrf over 36 hours for a surgery 😭😭😭 literally weeks before my 18th birthday 😭😭😭😭😭
Came home from a trip...40 hours of travel due to delays. My main water pipe had frozen (had turned off water before I left, thank goodness). When it thawed the pipe had cracked, water shooting everywhere. 6 30 AM, 4 hours of sleep trying to find a plumber, calling city to turn off water and stop the flood. Wonderful welcome home! At least my cat was happy to see me. :)
Last year I got bad food poisoning on the last couple of days of my vacation on January 6th. Threw up 12 times, went to the hospital, left AMA, and then took two long flights home that required me to run through the airport a day after being hooked up to an IV because a delay made my layover one hour, and I had to go through Customs and Security. This year has been better, though. Only annoyance was joint pain (standard for me though).
The blower on my furnace went yesterday and it was -20 outside. Have managed to keep the house warm with my basement fireplace and electric heaters. Hopefully someone shows up on Monday.
