Having a terrible day at work can be frustrating, overwhelming, and even demoralizing. Whether it's a challenging project, an annoying colleague, or just a series of misfortunes, sadly, there are plenty of reasons you might feel like you're a failure.
But as Sigrid and Bring Me The Horizon sang, "It's just a bad day / Not a bad life." And one of the ways to recover is by venting online. So we at Bored Panda decided to remind ourselves that the universe hasn't conspired against any of us. From time to time, everyone runs into some (undeserved) adversity.

I've lost my faith in humanity. What we do defines us and this is what we do. We are not stewards of the land or caretakers. We are a blight. We are just vultures picking at the carcass of a dying world.
I Work As A Valet And Make $3.85/Hour And I Received This As A Tip
Getting dealt a bad hand at work isn't the end of the world. Especially for content employees. According to Annie McKee, Ph.D., who is a best-selling business book author and advisor to top global leaders, from CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to government officials, those who are engaged with their jobs and colleagues work harder — and smarter. But that's quite rare.
"Far too many couldn’t care less about what’s happening around them," McKee wrote in Harvard Business Review. "For them, Wednesday is 'hump day' and they’re just working to get to Friday. And then there’s the other end of the bell curve — that nearly one out of five employees is actively disengaged. These people are sabotaging projects, backstabbing colleagues, and generally wreaking havoc in their workplaces."

"Disengaged, unhappy people aren’t any fun to work with, don’t add much value, and impact our organizations (and our economy) in profoundly negative ways," McKee explained.
"It’s even worse when leaders are disengaged because they infect others with their attitude. Their emotions and mindset impact others’ moods and performance tremendously. After all, how we feel is linked to what and how we think. In other words, thought influences emotion, and emotion influences thinking."

I feel so sorry for you. I guess a good hand cream won't quite do the job?
My hands got like this while I was working retail in the heart of the pandemic. Lotions and creams help, but after a while, your skin just gives up XD
Load More Replies...OâKeeffe's Working Hands is made for exactly this situation. It's great!
Vaseline thick overnight in medical gloves, keep doing that until you are healed.
My wife's been doing that for the last 14 years that were married. It improves but after a few days working (she's a nurse), it's back to being damaged :(
Load More Replies...Jojoba oil! I have severe psoriasis, jojoba doesn't cure this beast but my word it makes it much less painful and my skin drinks it up. I'm still a flakefest, waiting for approval for a new drug but I will forever use jojoba cause gurl, I'm pushing 38 and am still wrinkle free! Silver linings eh?
I don't know of it is available where you are - have you tried Sorion? It's ayurvedic and uses neem oil. The smell is ...well, could be worse... however, it really does wonders for my psoriasis!
Load More Replies...never worked in a medical lab, but my hands looked like this every winter while I worked in the food industry. (required gloves for ever job except Dominos.) pineapple juice, canned red peppers, and jalapeno brine burn like a m**o
i have ocd and often wash my hands into oblivion so my hands often look something like that. i know itâs not the same but hopefully i can help. i always mix petroleum jelly, vitamin e oil, and a little bit of aloe vera. put it on the dry skin before bed and put cotton gloves or socks over your hands. it helps me, i hope it can help you
Bag Balm. I highly, highly recommend using this petroleum-based product. We used this on our goat's teats to keep them from chapping, and I've been using it for over 50 years. Use on hands/feet with gloves/socks before bed.
I was a surgical RN for many years. My hands often look like that after scrubbing in on 10 to 12 cases a day.
When I was a restaurant consultant, I washed my hands 20-30 minutes a day. But it was the sanitizer that destroyed my hands. What helped me was Gold Bond extra strength foot cream. Before going to bed, I would cover my hands with it and put deli gloves on. By the morning they would be so much better! Had to do this about every two weeks.

That's how my dad's hands have been for years, working construction during Maine winters. O'Keefe's tends to help, but not when his fingers have already started splitting up the middle.
I am sure you make a lot of money or you really like it. I know I did.
This hurts beyond comprehension. Having your hands, fingers and fingertips crack and split is way more painful than it has a right to be. I guess there's a reason - maybe all the nerve endings- but when the edge of a piece of paper slips into the split open slit that was your fingertip? That right there would be a great method of torture. People would tell every secret.
Ouch. No gloves possible? Maybe wear gloves to bed and soak them in heavy duty Vaseline or hand cream? That looks painful.
My sons hands look like this. He works in a freezer and washes his hands frequently as well. Nothing helps.
I have the same problem.... printing medical and electronic devices.... we can only use lotion off the clock and we have to wear gloves at all times, like take off your gloves wash your hands put gloves back on.... my hands are destroyed until the summer when the air isn't so dry but the minute it gets cold it happens again.....
Dear Sore-I worked outdoors in Maine winters as a carpenter for 25 years. Your hands look pretty good to me. We all would develop HUGE cracks in our fingers, and when the point of a nail (as you fingered it from your pouch) poked in it felt like you had grabbed a live wire. Regardless, I still felt that I had the best job in the world.
Sometimes that is worsened from not drying your hands thoroughly after washing. Also try pure lanolin (extracted from sheep's wool) which is found in the breastfeeding department & used on cracked nipples. Work it into your skin & leave on overnight.
My parents were potters O'Keefes Hand cream at night. Day time wash hands put on liquid band aid on worst cracks more cream over top. Repeat. Certainly not perfect but helped quite a bit.
Nice thick hand cream, and you may hate this idea but try it out. Put on moisturizer and sleep with cotton gloves on over the moisturizer. Makes a huge difference if your profession requires frequent hand hygiene. Also, you can find inexpensive items that work well. Neither pleasant nor career ending.
Most lotions & cream really hurt when your skin is like this, (I'm a nurse).I have graft tissue all over my hands that drys & cracks & bleeds easily. I have tried it all. This is what I have come up with. I get a pair of cotton gloves and start with oil like coconut, olive ect then put the gloves on & let it sit. If you want, you can speed this up with a 2nd pair of gloves (to warm up hands) on top. I do this each night. Dimethicone (you get it in the hair care isle, in a little bottle) helps a ton too. It doesn't sting like lotions & cream either. PS keep up the good work, but don't let it hurt you. https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-18321/dimethicone-topical/details
OKeefe's Hand cream will clear that right up! I find it the best hand and foot cream!
I used to work in food processing. The soap worsened my eczema issue. I can be painful.
We use organic shea butter, organic olive oil, then a layer of Vaseline or A&D ointment if really bad.
My sisters hands used to look like this, I got her to put hand cream on about 8 times each day and they totally recovered after a few weeks.
Wow that looks terrible. Are you able to adjust what you're washing your hands with? Try something super gentle that doesn't foam. Like a shower oil or shower cream perhaps? Aveda and Aesop may help you.
There are hand creams that you apply a very small amount of that form a barrier over your skin that keeps dirt from sticking to out, so you don't have to scrub hard to get them clean, and it protects the hands moisture through multiple washings. Plus you can wear gloves?
I have the same problem, I use 'cod liver oil zinc oxide' you can ask for at any pharmacy. You put it on your hands generously and wrap them in a clean clothes over night. The itchiness and cuts stop bothering you immediately, it works and it feels awesome.
I work at a food plant, I was a warehouse forklift driver, worked in the freezer side for about a month, my eyelashes would get icicles. I work in a different department now with much better bosses.
Epoch Sole solution foot treatment lotion on your hands at night... magic stuff.
Reading thru, people say "gloves" but people may not be aware you can buy examining gloves by boxes of 100-150 and throw away. Some are powdered to make them easier to get on and off. Anywhere from $8 a box on up.
Call Occupational Health- it looks like contact dermatitis to me and it won't go away on it's own.
Gloves in a bottle while at work if you can't wear actual gloves at work. It forms a thin barrier and helps trap moisture between hand washings. I believe each application lasts about 4-8 hours, depending on how often you have to wash your hands.
Omg, I feel you on this one! I work with a lot of greasy metals, and wash my hands frequently at work. By the end of the week, my hands look just like this. I frequently use lotion, but to no avail.
Nah... my bf's hands look like this from late October to April every year. It doesn't even have to be freezing outside. Just under ca. 10°c and a little breeze and his hands get dry and after a while the bleeding will start. All that hand sanitizer during covid was less than fun to my bf in the Winter... đŹ
What ??You can't use a Greaseless Hand Cream on your Hands Between Washes?
If you have any friends in Alaska, ask their advice. There are some hand creams used in frigid areas that are particularly strong.
Try diabetic type lotion or. Yes..diabetic foot cream. Works quick. Or. Google handmade hand lotion bars. Easy to make. 3 ingredients, Works great
oh i remember this from working in a kiosk in a train station in the middle of winter. it was so cold the supply to the ice machine froze and burst. your hands are in and out of water all day, but you cant wear warm gloves because they arent hygenic. one of the other shops in the station was a body shop, they felt bad for us and gave us some free hand cream.
bag balm - every night in light cotton gloves and I'd wear gloves in the freezer too -- cotton ones under the lab gloves
Use Neosporin with lidocaine as your hand cream at home. Only creams with Hyaluronic acid will absorb into that wall of dryness!
OKeefe working hands lotion. Maybe calmoseptine and cotton gloves at bedtime. from a nurse washing hands 80x a day
You can't wear surgical gloves or some barrier protective measures?
The company should provide a good cream for all day use. This is a health and safety issue
If you can find it - Corn Husker's lotion (I've purchased it on Amazon). My poor Dad, native Texan, would get cracked & bloody knuckles in Pennsylvania winters - Corn Husker's was the only thing that helped.
Rub your hands thoroughly with good quality of olive oil (a thin layer would be enough) 2 or 3 times or more if necessary, a day and see the miracle. Olive oil is the perfect cure for many kinds of skin problems. It softens and absolutely REPAIRS the skin (and hair, of course). REMINDER: use NOT expensive but GOOD quality of pure olive oil.
A light layer of Desitin and cotton gloves, wear when you go to bed. Miracle healing.
Get some Cornhuskers lotion. I worked at a race track and put my hands in hot disinfection water4-5 times a morning, in winter. Brutal..
Maybe this obvious to everyone here, but drink more water. You can moisturize from the inside as well as the outside.
Hand cream, donât rub it all in. Instead put on some nitrile gloves and let it soak overnight. Every night.
I have OCD, when my teens were small, I had one in nappies, one potty training and one using the toilet but needed help to wipe after a poop, my hands were similar to this, I just kept washing after touching anything, there was just so much poop between the 3 in a day I was always worried that I touched, this door handle, that kitchen side, the kettle, ect Eventually I would wash my hands after everything I touched. I would bend my fingers and they would just split open. I have had another baby, 14 years after my last child, I have a few tricks that help, like wearing disposable gloves when I change a nappy, I also have to use them for eating anything with my hands like a sandwich. And this as many people with OCD will know is just in the surface, how it affects you mentally, well that's debilitating.
I worked in an Emergency Room and lived with this. All the cracking was so painful. The O'Keefe's lotion helped. Glad those days are over.
Putting bee wax based cream while sleeping should do the trick. I face same problem during COVID too much use of alcohol based sanitizer and hand washing.
Try âWorking Handsâ lotion. My hands are like this too and out of alllll the things Iâve tried, thatâs seems to offer the most relief. Bought some more for myself and put it in my Christmas stocking, ha.
Cotton gloves and heaps of good lotion. Sleep with them on, works on feet too. Life changing.
Oh d*mn, that's worse then my hands get, and mine get cracked and start bleeding in the winter. That's gotta hurt.
I feel that. I have an arsenal of creams and lotions in my locker at work. Antibacterial ointment can help keep infections down. This is more painful than it looks.
Aquaphor and/or Eucerin are miracle products. I have a tube of Eucerin for when my regular daily hand cream just isn't keeping up. The Aquaphor is for when I've gone a while without remembering to use any hand cream and things have deteriorated to the 'cracked and close to bleeding' level. It's a greasy mess, but holy c**p does that stuff work.
When my hands start to dry out and crack liked that, but not that bad, I use Neosporin on my hands.
Aw man, poor person's knuckles are splitting open ): Been there too, have eczema on my hands in the cold. If anyone else has this problem, and most creams aren't working, maybe try Gold Bond ultimate lotion with aloe. I've tried OKeefes, Corn Huskers, Udderly Smooth, and nothing worked except the Gold Bond one. A Godsend, I even use it on my face sometimes after washing it. (Edit- To be fair, Aveeno's eczema balm and pure lanolin are good, too, but they're greasy.)
I work in health care, i wash my hands ALOT, you really need to care for your hamds. Good moisturiser and good soaps
My husband was a UPS driver for 25 years. Every winter his hands would look like this due to installing and removing tire chains multiple times during the day. There was nothing that really helped, the best hand creams brought temporary relief, but the only thing that kept him from bleeding on the packages was super glue in the cuts.
I work in a pharmacy and my knuckles are cracked to pieces. Itchy too, accidentally made it bleed today and had to run and take care of my hand. The times I put lotion on, 5 minutes later I have to use hand sanitizer. Sigh. My hands hurt.
Reminds me of a fellow I once knew-Army enlisted (I forget what rank he left at, but he was only in around 10 years), who had made it to the highest earning tier as a Mary Kay consultant (where you get the car from the company; no it doesnât have to be Mary Kay pink) selling hand cream to the soldiers at a Greenland base as the government-issued hand cream did jack to avoid this exact thing in the sub-zero (F not C) environment.
Mary Kaye used to have an amazing pink face cream. Don't know if they still sell it, but that stuff was great.
Load More Replies...I know that feeling, my hands do something similar in the winter. Not nearly to that degree. â„ïž OâKeefes Working Hands is a God send.
Had a gal friend who became an asst. in Dental practice and she said they are taught to wash their hands with cold water - it's the soap that kills the germs, and the cold water doesn't leach the oils from your skin nearly as much. AND, of course, use a good lotion when you can.
McKee thinks it’s time to finally blow up the myth that feelings don’t matter at work.
"Science is on our side: there are clear neurological links between feelings, thoughts, and actions. When we are in the grip of strong negative emotions, it’s like having blinders on," she said. "We focus mostly — sometimes only — on the source of the pain. We don’t process information as well, think creatively, or make good decisions. Frustration, anger, and stress cause an important part of us to shut down —the thinking, engaged part. Disengagement is a natural neurological and psychological response to pervasive negative emotions."

However, it’s not just negative emotions we need to watch out for. "Extremely strong positive emotions have the same effect," McKee said.
"Some studies show that too much happiness can make you less creative and prone to engage in riskier behaviors (think about how we act like fools when we fall in love!). On the work front: I’ve seen groups of people worked up into a frenzy at sales conferences and corporate pep rallies. Little learning or innovation comes out of these meetings. Throw in a lot of alcohol and you’ve got a whole host of other problems."
So it sounds like having your suspenders stuck in your chair every once in a while can be actually quite beneficial.

Since nobody can prepare for the unexpected (just the way they can react to it), it isn't surprising that workers worry about other things.
"One could argue that today's employees are as equally stressed as their predecessors, but for different reasons," said Jodi Chavez, president of Atlanta-based Randstad Professionals, a segment of Randstad US, which provides finance, accounting, HR, sales, marketing, legal staffing and recruitment services. "They fear having their jobs outsourced to another country, have anxiety about how best to work alongside new technologies such as automation and robotics, have increased financial pressures with rising student loan debt and late retirement, and feel pressure to be 'on' and answering e-mails 24/7."

In difficult times, you need to find an internal reserve of energy and hope to help you make your way through. In other words, you need to tap into your resilience.
"Like so many other human traits, resilience can be woven into the fabric of one’s being (nature) and/or it can be learned (nurture)," career and business coach Marjie Terry said.
"One’s natural disposition may lead them to always look on the bright side or to look for the silver lining. For others, with an accumulation of life experience, they develop a resilience perspective and realize that, as the old saying goes, what doesn’t break you makes you stronger. They develop an ability to recognize that it’s important to keep going even when life hands you challenge after challenge—they develop perspective."
Sometimes, there really isn't much else we can do but endure. And laugh!
