Having a terrible day at work can be frustrating, overwhelming, and even demoralizing. Whether it's a challenging project, an annoying colleague, or just a series of misfortunes, sadly, there are plenty of reasons you might feel like you're a failure.
But as Sigrid and Bring Me The Horizon sang, "It's just a bad day / Not a bad life." And one of the ways to recover is by venting online. So we at Bored Panda decided to remind ourselves that the universe hasn't conspired against any of us. From time to time, everyone runs into some (undeserved) adversity.

I've lost my faith in humanity. What we do defines us and this is what we do. We are not stewards of the land or caretakers. We are a blight. We are just vultures picking at the carcass of a dying world.
I Work As A Valet And Make $3.85/Hour And I Received This As A Tip
Getting dealt a bad hand at work isn't the end of the world. Especially for content employees. According to Annie McKee, Ph.D., who is a best-selling business book author and advisor to top global leaders, from CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to government officials, those who are engaged with their jobs and colleagues work harder — and smarter. But that's quite rare.
"Far too many couldn’t care less about what’s happening around them," McKee wrote in Harvard Business Review. "For them, Wednesday is 'hump day' and they’re just working to get to Friday. And then there’s the other end of the bell curve — that nearly one out of five employees is actively disengaged. These people are sabotaging projects, backstabbing colleagues, and generally wreaking havoc in their workplaces."

"Disengaged, unhappy people aren’t any fun to work with, don’t add much value, and impact our organizations (and our economy) in profoundly negative ways," McKee explained.
"It’s even worse when leaders are disengaged because they infect others with their attitude. Their emotions and mindset impact others’ moods and performance tremendously. After all, how we feel is linked to what and how we think. In other words, thought influences emotion, and emotion influences thinking."

McKee thinks it’s time to finally blow up the myth that feelings don’t matter at work.
"Science is on our side: there are clear neurological links between feelings, thoughts, and actions. When we are in the grip of strong negative emotions, it’s like having blinders on," she said. "We focus mostly — sometimes only — on the source of the pain. We don’t process information as well, think creatively, or make good decisions. Frustration, anger, and stress cause an important part of us to shut down —the thinking, engaged part. Disengagement is a natural neurological and psychological response to pervasive negative emotions."

Agreed. I’d actually be willing to crawl into that dumpster/trash can and rescue all those books.
Load More Replies...I've worked at a book seller some time ago and this is a normal occurrence with remaindered paperbacks that just won't sell.. From what I can see the front covers are torn off to be sent back to the publisher as proof. Book sellers, even the big stores, cannot afford to return the entire book due to the cost of shipping.
Yes, Patrick Linnen. Was the same when I worked at a book store.
Load More Replies...Why? Surely a charity shop would have loved those donated to them :(
Or a library! Or a hospital! Or a prison! Or anywhere besides the dumpster! Argh!
Load More Replies...Trust me that the workers hate it too. The publishers require that if the book doesn't sell within its run, you rip off the front cover to send back to them for a refund then you must, by law, throw out the rest.
Book stores are contractually required to dispose of or destroy unsold books after they return the covers to the publisher for a refund. If they sold or gave away these books, they could be criminally charged with fraud.
correct, once you have claimed a credit for a sale-or-return book, the book technically belongs to the publisher.
Load More Replies...To everyone saying they could be donated or given away: the bookstore only gets a credit for the unsold stock if the covers are returned both as proof of unsold stock and to render the stock unsaleable. Margins are relatively low in bookselling (higher than grocery, which relies on volume, but much, much lower than fashion) and booksellers can't afford to give up the credits. This style of credit management is generally restricted to very mass market titles such as specific romance brands.
This is part of the return process. Doesn't pay for or want the whole book, just the cover.
Used to work at Borders. We had to do the same exact thing. Rip off the front cover (to send to the publisher, proving that we didn't sell the book) & throw the entire book into the trash. If someone took the book for themselves (without the front cover) it was considered theft.
If books don't sell, book stores are legally required to tear off the cover and discard. As a librarian (and former Waldenbooks employee) I don't like it, either, but millions of new books are published every year. If we didn't discard, we'd be awash.
I work at a bookstore. This is how publishers discard books. There's actually a law protecting them. Note every one of these books has a page declaring it to be reported if it was purchased without a cover.
in order to get credit for unsold books stores are instructed to tear off the cover, send it to the publishing company, and dispose of the books, the publishing company will reimburse the store based on the covers they receive, the good thing is that the people working in those stores usually get to take home as many free books as possible
These are strips. This is what happens. No one bought them. People want new titles? Old titles gotta go. Trees were grown specifically to make books. When they cut the trees down, more were planted. These are being recycled. The alternative is shipping them back, which is that much more pollution. The printed word is sacred, but these are just a *copy* of that. In most cases, employees can take these home—publishers like booksellers to be informed—but there are so very many.
Better a coverless/stripped book in the trash than the jobber wrapping the stripped book (which they've been reimbursed for) and selling it 3 for $10 at a convenience store. That's literally theft. The publisher doesn't get paid, nor does the author. Plus, the publisher has paid the jobber back for stripping the book, so double theft.
This happens in every place you see books being sold. Books goes into the baler to be recycled.
This is a legal requirement. Though they could have recycled the paper - that looks like regular trash. Has been a thing with books / magazines for years. Publishers want stands/stores to stock product. Stands do so with promise to be able to return unsold for credit. To avoid shipping tons of unwanted product back, most publishers take just the covers as proof the product wasn't being sold at retail. But the conditions require they books are not being put out to the public because the publisher bought them back. Is wasteful but shipping them back to be discarded at the other end is more wasteful.
And, in fact, not all the publishers that require full copies (the entire book) to be shipped back actually practise reverse inventory i.e. putting the back into their warehoused stock to be resold. In these cases the books are pulped at the return collection point - but there is the added cost and environmental impact of shipping the entire book.
Load More Replies...Yes. This is standard practice in the book industry. They are not sold. You have to remove the cover and send that part back to the publisher. Then you have to dispose of the book. It is illegal for you to do anything else with it, including sell, donate , distribute. If you have a problem with it, try to change the law.
Tearing covers off and sending them back to the publisher for book credit is standard industry practice. If bookstores can't do this, they will buy (and make available) fewer books. You actually benefit from this practice by having a wider selection in front of you.
I used to work in a bookstore. The vendor gives credit back to the store for these that dont' sell. It's like returning the unsold, only it's too expensive to actually ship back, so you tear off the cover of the book and toss in trash instead. Lucky person finds lots of good reading in the trash
This is common. Tear the covers off a slow mover and send them in for credit on your next order.
Not every book needs to be saved. There are literally hundreds of copies of these books.
This is common when books don't sell. They're usually sent to recycling.
Just stripped books. Stores get credit for unsold paperbacks by returning their covers only. Selling a stripped book would also violate sales agreements with distributors and publishers.
Were the covers torn off? That's so you can't resell them, I've been told.
Book stores throw books out all the time. They usually tear off the front cover first.
Book distributors don't want the stores to return the entire books. All the book stores have to do is rip off the front cover to return for credit to their accounts. I don't know who decides when a book is pulled from the shelf. I don't know why once the cover is ripped off why the books can't be donated to schools (age appropriate), care facilities, hospitals, etc. It's a huge waste.
The program Reader link that services CBVS and several other stores routinely tear the cover off and destroy the books. Perfectly good books (minus their covers) thrown away every week. The covers are mailed back to the publisher to prove they were destroyed. Take one book with you and it is considered theft.
When books don't sell and the publisher will give the seller his money back they are required to send the books back. But to save money they are now required to just rip the covers off and send those back. If they give or sell those books they are committing fraud.
Withh what money? Bricks and mortar bookstores are struggling badly enough already. If they can't return unsold stock for credit how the heck are they going to survive?
Load More Replies...I worked at a Co op beside a university and the international students would throw 200.00 to 700.00 text books in the garbage bins and shoots when we have a program for 3rd world and low income students to have access to these....I'm talking 1000's of books piled in with garbage
This is what happens to mass market paperbacks that don't sell.
That is literally how target gets rid of books they don't sell they have to rip the cover off and throw away the books they then have to return the covers as proof to get a credit in return for the unsold books
I worked in a big chain bookstore many, many years ago and we had to do this as well. I can't remember if it was just the cover we tore off? We couldn't take any (I get why, mostly) but it always seemed like such a waste.
Yeah, instead of paying to ship unsold books back to be destroyed or marked down, publishers have the covers removed and the book says inside "If this book is sold without a cover, then the author and publisher received no compensation for it and it was reported destroyed." That has always bothered me when they could just mark them down until they sell.
These aren't precious tomes, they're mass market paperbacks that the publishers deliberately overprint so stores can make big stacks. The world is drowning in books. Honestly, please try to understand the why, and if you can't, ask a bookseller to explain it.
At least donate them! Charity shop! Hospital! The list is endless! That is some serious rage-inducing behaviour!!! When I'm done with my books I always give them to someone else or drop them at a charity shop. My previous manager and I actually swapped! We both had a bunch of books and as avid readers we swapped our respective stashes! 🙂
Now I just see free books to my collection. I never find discarded books in my life...
These are "strips." They can't be legally donated, resold, or reused in anyway. It's frustrating, but the system was devised long ago to cut shipping costs for bookstores returns for credit on unsold books. Its been this way since the 1970's.
:( There's someone out there who would have valued a good read... What a waste!
they get paid for the loss but have to remove the cover. it's been standard practice for all my lifetime.
Having owned a bookstore and worked in libraries, you absolutely do throw books away. They're objects like anything else, they're not sacred; these in this picture will be mass market books that didn't sell - you return the cover for credit, and recycle the unwanted book. It's not like they're the first printing of the Gutenberg bible or anything.
This is called a stripped book throw them somewhere that the public can't access. Of the author will receive no money
Quick note about these. All the front covers have been removed. These are called stripped books. Basically, a publisher may contact a book seller and request they destroy a number of books. This can be due to a mistake, or some issue with the contract of the writer the publisher has, or really any host of other issues. The front covers are removed and returned to the publisher, who in turn gives the book store credit. Legally, once the front covers are removed (IE once the books are 'stripped') they are reported as destroyed and can't be sold, or donated, and must either be recycled, or sent to a land fill, or burned. What happens depends entirely on if there is a recycling plant handy, or if the bookstore has access to an incinerator or not. Always remember, if you see a book in a bookstore, that is being sold very cheaply which lacks its front cover, the bookstore is illegally selling it. It's a form of fraud. They're already being paid for it once.
I'd call a friend or family member and have them help me take everything
If this is waste from an actual book store, than I’d like to know the reasons behind the decision in this day and age of easy recycling and emphasis on pre-loved. If it’s from a library then there would be very good reasons why each book was binned, librarians don’t just go mad and fling all their spare books into the rubbish - however, in the UK there would be sales of the books at libraries, before getting rid.
I've found over 2,100 books from the recycling bins at the library. The books were all in good shape with no torn covers or pages. I only took books that I knew I'd read & over half were children's books. I given away alot & used many in my Little Free Library. However I can no longer do this since I was put on trespass notice & threatened with an arrest!! WTF!? Why does it matter if I take something that has been tossed out because I think I can find it a better place to go? Who is this hurting & why the hell would it be a crime??
look, if you cant do anything with the books, and they are still useable, donate them to a thrift store or school or orphanage! its not that hard ppl!
Some of them don’t appear to have front covers, which indicates that something else is wrong — type that runs off the page, 3 chapter 2s and no chapters 3, 4, 5, or other printing problems) or sometimes damage rendering the book unreadable. Recycling is about the only thing you can do.
At least some of them don’t have covers — this usually indicates something else is wrong with them (six chapter 3s and no chapters 4-6 or something), and recycling is really all you can do.
I'm a book worm and THIS. This has literally killed me. Who even did this? 😭
Libraries throw away books they can't give away. Take off the cover and toss. Couldn't save them all.
I have let maybe a hundred lf books on public places in my all life, every book seems to have found a new owner.
Well, I agree both with Headless Roach and with the librarians and bookstore workers. I once threw away a very old copy of LOTR that had fallen apart completely, pages had turned dark yellow, it really was unusable and I gifted myself a new and illustrated copy. But the covers were so beautiful, I apologise to The Lost Copy on a regular basis.
There's a poetic symmetry to this picture and the first one in the series. Same culprit, I'd wager.
my brain is split. one side is outraged at this heinous crime. the other is ecstatic because free books
It costs too much in shipping to send back the entire book. So most companies will just return the cover.
Terrible! What is an “Indigo book store?” Norma Jean Morrissey
Why did they do that? Those books could have been re - donated if not wanted anymore
This is appalling. And I remember doing this before we had any awareness (like, 1980) because although they cannot be sold legally without their covers (there is message to that effect inside the book), and it wasn't cost-effective for either the publisher or the store to pay to ship them back, which would have left the publisher with the same issue. I can't believe it never occurred to us to donate them somewhere, anywhere.
Actually, they have removed the front cover and put them in a recycle bin. This is the correct way to dispose of old books. Sometimes they do need to be recycled.
They rip the front covers off and mail the covers to the publishers for a refund. It's cheaper then mailing the entire book back. Agreed its a waste. Lots of homeless shelters or prisons would happily take them but is forbidden. Yeah I asked.
I found a big dumpster full of books done catholic school a couple cities over threw away. Yeah me and the girls grabbed them all out, and put them on Facebook for free (the ones we didn't keep) so wasteful!
Those are "stripped" books that were unsold. The cover is returned to the publisher for a refund for the store. Believe it or not, this benefits the author and publisher. It does hurt to see, though...
I would have just taken that entire thing back to my house. I mean...free books people, FREE BOOKS!!!!
You tear a cover off a book and send back the cover when returning book to publisher saves on freight and is illegal to sell book without cover
My soul hurts seeing this. Unrelated note: can someone recommend me books? I'm queer with homophobic parents. So queer books that don't have obvious covers lol.
I would take all of them home, and give them away or keep any I liked
HOW DARE THEY THROW BOOKS AWAY!!!! BOOKS ARE MY LiFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Notice that they don't have covers?? For at least the past 60 years (my mother worked in the industry and I am old), that is how book sellers are credited by publishers: They send back only the book covers and waste the rest. I saw the waste as a child and it hasn't changed.
I'd have been chuffed "bring the car round. We're starting a library"!
Ooook let me explain this. Recyclers will not except glossy covers for recycling. These are books that are not selling and the publisher does not want the whole book back for credit...and the book seller could not afford to sent them back to begin with. So the covers of the books are removed as it has the information needed for the store to get credit and the rest of the book is discarded in the trash. I blame the recycling technology for this not the store.
Unfortunately this happens everywhere. They rip off the covers and can destroy them. That's why they say if you buy a book without a cover that it might be stolen.
*boggle* why on EARTH would you throw books away (unless they are damaged beyond repair) when there are so many places where you can donate them???
I once worked at a chain bookstore...once we were told to toss out all the unsold books, videos, etc that couldn't be returned to the corporate HQ and I had the temerity to suggest that we donate them all to some deserving charity. I almost got fired. Same thing at a chain retailer's garden shop: all the unsold plants were destroyed rather than have them donated. It's a retail thing.
What's an Indigo employee going to do with all that time on their hands once they're fired.
A lot of UK charity shops have refuse bins filled with paperbacks, too.
Booksellers are told to do that. They send in the covers for credit.
Can a person access some of these books without it being illegal or wrong?
WOW!! Somebody who can't Read obviously felt entitled to destroy others from doing so!!
They'd be my books now. Still readable but why didn't they just donate them to a thrift shop?
Sat in a bargain week with no sales? Covers are ripped off. Why not donate to nursing homes, libraries, thrift stores?
I can't belive this. I would take all either read or give away. I love books.
That’s what they do. Unsold books cannot be returned to vendor, covers must be removed and they are hopefully recycled. It’s sad because I was raised to take care of a book , You don’t dog ear a book, you don’t deface a book. I can’t even recycle magazines and readers digest so I have to put them in the donation bag
i know they have to tear the covers off to stop people reselling them and stuff. but those books look basically pristine otherwise! this breaks my heart!
Sometimes they get sorted out to give to free libraries or similar. The other options include mulching..which is worse than giving them away.On a positive note..would love to dumpster-dive....
The covers are torn off and sent back to the printer for credit on books not sold. It's required by the printer.
Yep. That's what they do. I've seen it when I worked retail. They just rip all the top pages off everything and trash it. Sucks. Bad.
Put a book in empty trolleys, not a bin.. or give them out in the store for free.
I wonder if the books had been on a FREE table would they have been taken?
There are so many places that could use these books; nursing homes, libraries, schools. I would call some who does not work there and let them take the books.
The book distributors don't want the entire book returned. The book stores only have to rip off the front cover and return that to the company for refund/credit to their account. I have no idea how or who determines it's time to take the book off the shelf and toss into the trash. Rip off the cover and donate the books to a school, care facility, hospital, etc.
They take the covers so they cannot be sold. But donate to jails, retirement homes, anywhere
When I worked at a store I will not name and we had to discard items we were told if we took anything out of the dumpster we would be fired!
Me too! My parents are rolling over in their graves. This shows a significant lapse in imagination!
Donate them! Everyone has different tastes in reading materials!! So flipping wasteful!!
I used to work in a Christian thrift store. At the end of the day, I went to the dumpster and saved every Harry Potter thing they labelled as black magic
Look like best-sellers, but I learned to love reading with comics and pulp fiction... so, grab them & donate (or read them yourself, why not)!
Never heard of the book store, but my name is Indigo and I love books
All bookstores do this. It’s cheaper to mail back just the covers of unsold paperbacks to the publisher for credit than the entire book. It’s a huge waste.
I can guess this is in the USA? I see so much much ignorance and sheer waste here.
No I would just take them myself and if I didn’t like the book I would sell them for as couple of dollars or give them back or start a book drive
It's the process call strip covers and it's a disgusting practice where if a book doesn't sell, you rip off the cover and return that to the publisher and throw away the book thus making it un-sellable. How do I know? I worked at an Indigo; it's unfortunately a common practice and one they keep claiming "will change'
Per their contract with the publisher they have to do that. They have no choice because they have to send the covers back to get credit for the unsold books.
They should donate them or put them in a free section. Headless Roach is correct.
Why were they thrown out? If the store couldn't sell them, a library would happily take them as a donation.
I have always been an avid reader and the dad of one of my friends knew it, he worked at a transfer station where tons of these books would come in and he would very thoughtfully box them all up and give them to me! I found so many new authors this way! Any books that weren't my style (romance novels) were given away to others.
I know they have to pull the covers off, but these would be greatly appreciated at the local jail/prison.
It looks to me that all the books here are complete with their covers. Nothing to do with refunds!
Goodwill can't sell these because the cover has been removed. It's a legal requirement to prevent fraudulent resale of returns. The bookseller has been reimbursed for these books so they must be removed from sale anywhere.
Load More Replies...WTF!! They got credit for the books, too, that's why the covers are torn off. They could have donated them to an underprivileged school or library, this is SO wrong.
Books state "if you are reading this book without a cover, it has been stolen..."
Load More Replies...no one mistreats books and gets away with it. by mistreat i mean purposely, because i am guilty of many a soft cover falling off from being read too much. someone save them please!
That is not even a recycling bin! I appreciate the comments noting that legally, unsold books must be destroyed. But surely being pulped and turned into other paper products is at least as destroyed as being tossed in a landfill!
Unfortunately this is part of the publishing process. They are, however, allowed to give them away without front covers so they should have done that.
Really? We were told by our suppliers that we were required to throw them out and keeping them or giving them away would be considered theft as they issued refunds. I mean, we DID keep them and give them away, but we were told we weren't allowed to. There are many books in my personal library without front covers.
Load More Replies...Charity shops can't shift books in good condition, let alone these. I know, I've tried.
Load More Replies...Notice how they intentionally tear off the covers just to be d*cks.
Notice how you didn't read any of the other comments here explaining the lack of covers, just cause you're a d*ck
Load More Replies...Omg they charge so much for them, it's hard to afford books for alot of people then they throw out n get zero money for them. How bout a buck a piece or donate ya bag of d**k's?!
How many times does the answer to this need to be posted? They remove the front covers and return them to the publishers for credit on unsold stock. The book must then be destroyed or disposed off and cannot be resold by law.

However, it’s not just negative emotions we need to watch out for. "Extremely strong positive emotions have the same effect," McKee said.
"Some studies show that too much happiness can make you less creative and prone to engage in riskier behaviors (think about how we act like fools when we fall in love!). On the work front: I’ve seen groups of people worked up into a frenzy at sales conferences and corporate pep rallies. Little learning or innovation comes out of these meetings. Throw in a lot of alcohol and you’ve got a whole host of other problems."

Since nobody can prepare for the unexpected (just the way they can react to it), it isn't surprising that workers worry about other things.
"One could argue that today's employees are as equally stressed as their predecessors, but for different reasons," said Jodi Chavez, president of Atlanta-based Randstad Professionals, a segment of Randstad US, which provides finance, accounting, HR, sales, marketing, legal staffing and recruitment services. "They fear having their jobs outsourced to another country, have anxiety about how best to work alongside new technologies such as automation and robotics, have increased financial pressures with rising student loan debt and late retirement, and feel pressure to be 'on' and answering e-mails 24/7."

In difficult times, you need to find an internal reserve of energy and hope to help you make your way through. In other words, you need to tap into your resilience.
"Like so many other human traits, resilience can be woven into the fabric of one’s being (nature) and/or it can be learned (nurture)," career and business coach Marjie Terry said.
"One’s natural disposition may lead them to always look on the bright side or to look for the silver lining. For others, with an accumulation of life experience, they develop a resilience perspective and realize that, as the old saying goes, what doesn’t break you makes you stronger. They develop an ability to recognize that it’s important to keep going even when life hands you challenge after challenge—they develop perspective."
