Apparently Dough Doesn't Rise

Apparently Dough Doesn't Rise

WhippyWhippy Report

We all like to believe that we are logical and rational creatures. However, in reality, humans are subject to preconceived judgments that unconsciously influence our decisions.

When we overconfidently think we’re right and can’t seem to accept the fact that we’re not, we’re experiencing confirmation bias.

As trusted online mental health resource Verywell Mind explained, “Confirmation bias is a type of cognitive bias that favors information that confirms your previously existing beliefs or biases.”

A cognitive bias is a systematic thinking error that occurs in our minds when our brain attempts to simplify information about our surroundings. Processing all the data available to us takes a lot of time and energy, so our brains pick the details that agree with our pre-existing opinions and knowledge. They act as general rules that help us make sense of the world and reach decisions quicker.

Let’s have a look at an example that illustrates confirmation bias better. Imagine that you believe that Kamala Harris is a better choice for US president than Donald Trump. Chances are that you will seek information that showcases the candidate you support in a positive light while dismissing any facts that might have a negative effect on their image.

That was a problem during the 2020 US elections if I remember. People claimed there was election fraud because of the number of votes from Georgia, the state was too high. People had Googled “the number of people in Georgia” and the country results showed. Where had the millions of extra votes come from?

Once you're confronted with new information about Harris that confirms what you already believe, you’ll be more likely to accept it as true, overlook any flaws in it, incorporate it into your belief system, and remember it later to support your opinion during a discussion. On the other hand, if the new facts contradict your view of the candidate, you’ll be more likely to get defensive about it, criticise it and forget it later on.

Woke Up To This Conversation Between My Co-Owner And A New Member

xhyenabite Report

Due to our tendency to dismiss data that isn’t compatible with our belief system, it can impair our logic and decisions and lead to poor choices. For instance, if we’re convinced that a certain investment is beneficial for us, we might ignore the red flags saying it’s not. Or if we are set on getting a job at a particular company, we may dismiss the signs showing it's a toxic work environment.

There’s no way to eliminate confirmation bias, as it happens due to the natural way our brains work. On a positive note, it can make us feel confident in our beliefs and preserve or build our self-esteem. This also helps us stay certain and secure in our environment.

Even though this way of thinking can’t be entirely removed, we can take steps to avoid it. First, it’s important to accept that we have biases that impact our decisions. It’s in our nature to use mental shortcuts that allow us to make judgments more efficiently, but it also means that we tend to disregard facts that contradict our views.

Then, when looking for information, thoroughly consider all the evidence available rather than just seeing data that confirms your opinion. Use credible sources and read them entirely before drawing any conclusions. Pointing out biases in others (respectfully, of course!) can additionally help an individual think more critically.

I understand the confusion, and I think education is important. Most of the world's ice is locked up in Antarctica. If you watch videos, you'll see that it's piled up, forming cliffs. In fact, it's the tallest continent, averaging 8,200 feet high on average. If that melts, yes, water levels will rise hundreds of feet. And yes, it's freezing cold (haha), BUT it's surrounded by ocean, which is by definition above freezing. That ocean also flows underneath Antarctica; heated just a few degrees, it can, and is, melting enough to break off huge chunks of Antarctica, which can then float north to much warmer temperatures, and melt entirely. Tell people to Google "Doomsday Glacier."

ice is less dense than water, hence it floats. The molecular bonds spread the molecules out more = less dense. This is why when you put a jar of water in the freezer, it bursts open and shatters. Hence, as it melts, the greater volume in image 1 is reduced in volume in image 2, because the greater space used by the ice is now lesser. Simple.

So by showing an inaccurate depiction of the ocean and icebergs and actually proving the climate change point you'd have to say "oh my the level of the ocean was 1 cup with the iceberg and now melted it doubled to 2 cups" so what was your point lol

Also (although it is a minor factor) a floating object displaces its own weight in water. Ice cubes are freshwater ice floating in fresh water, so displace the exact amount of water that is in the ice cube. Icebergs are fresh water ice floating in sea water. Fresh water is less dense than salt water so if an iceberg melts the volume of the sea does increase very slightly (and the ocean is very marginally less salty). (A further big factor is that as water gets warmer it expands.)

Stop getting crazy about climate changing. We can't change anything. Climate is changing since the beginning of the planet. It was raining for almost 2 million years without much stopping until a thousand years where the 1s precedent of Humans appeared, after the disappearance of dinosaurs. A decade ago, a scientist was researching about glaciers and found out a glacier in the Andes at Ecuador was formed almost instantly, in a very short time, due to a sudden and extreme decrease of temperature enclosing the fern in ice as if they were in one of those acrilic paperweights. The ferns were perfectly preserved as with IQF. Many changes occurred in our planet before we existed and before we invented the machines and before we were billions. And the good thing is we always find the way to better our lives, that's how progress happens. The 1st WW gave us many good things apart from the awful loss of lives and WWII also gave us a lot of progress besides the losses.

Technological, medical, financial, social, political improvements created by or for war were introduced in everybodies lives. From hardship come good changes too. Don't let mercenaries make your life misery with their agenda of dispair. There's hope, and Humanity isn't the problem as those criminals want you to think. There's hope. And people doesn't have to die as they want you to believe. There was a time when the air was very poluted and we managed to get it clean. Rivers were polluted also, and they were cleaned. This shall pass too. Everything passes.

"Even if we can't change others' biases, remember they may be at play when we find ourselves in a disagreement with someone who seems very entrenched in their own viewpoint," licensed psychologist David Susman, PhD, explains. "Rather than confronting them directly about how inaccurate or irrational we think they are, it's often more productive to present facts and information in a nondirective way and ask them to consider an alternative point of view or some point of compromise."

Yeah but no. The UK is a sovereign nation made up of three countries and one province (Northern Ireland). Great Britain is a country made up of three countries (England, Scotland and Wales). This is why, in some sporting events we compete as 'Great Britain & Northern Ireland'. Northern Ireland is NOT a country in of itself. As a British person with Irish Citizenship (Republic of Ireland). I can confirm that this shìt gets veeeeery complicated if you look into it enough... Complicated enough that the OP was neither totally correct... Or totally incorrect.
