I used thumbtacks... not that they did a good job keeping the blankets up. Half the time, they would fall down & you'd run the chance of stepping on a thumbtack... which is also part of the reason why they stopped taking my door away, lol.

honestly, I feel like if you raise your children well enough the chances of them doing drugs or something in their room is a lot lower anyway. Besides, even if they were using drugs, an addict is just gonna find somewhere else to go do their drugs.

If the "drug" is marijuana, I don't even care. Better than alcohol.

We removed our son's door for slamming it when he was 12. Was repeatedly asked to not. It was his way of showing defiance. Had it off for a month. Never slammed another door in our home. He is 30 now. Spent 12+ years in the Army, who I'm certain also doesn't allow slamming doors. He works for the Government. Has a son of his own who is 3. Never fails to call at least once a week; texts often as well. We are always the first call/text in any occasion good or bad. Cares and loves his family and has never stopped doing so. It isn't the removal of the door. It is the way the situation is handled. He was warned of its impending removal due to his poor choices. He was aware he was the reason it was ultimately removed. He didn't blame us. There was discussion during it being down and prior to it being put back up. Did he like it? Absolutely not. But he understood why it happened. Life, circumstances and punishments aren't black and white.

I had that happen to me as a teenager, kind of, I slammed my door and my dad came upstairs raging, then burst my door down. (it was a bad time for all of us, I was really suffering with my mental health, and taking it out a lot on my parents, so I can't blame them for reaching a breaking point) but my parents gave me a curtain for the door because even then they respect that a person needs privacy, and it was replaced within the month. (with a better proper solid door rather than those cheep hollow type ones xD)

That's a well executed punishment that perfectly fits the "crime", but that's the thing, you didn't take the door away to control your son and deny him privacy, but for him to learn to behave himself.

Yes, but you were teaching him that his actions have consequences, it sounds like this parent is just on a power trip for no reason

He went from autoritarian rule into the army with authoritarian rule. Now you are the first people he contacts? None of this sounds healthy.

I don't think teaching a kid to behave is authoritarian. The punishment was not violent or humiliating, and the parents tried talking first. If slamming the door was a pattern of behaviour he was taught he had to find healthier ways to deal with frustration. What were the parents supposed to do?

What Stephanie said is SO important to acknowledge!! "Life, circumstances and punishments aren't black and white." I had my door removed as a teen for slamming it. I said I would never do that to my kid if I had one. But when I caught her multiple times violating some important rules (think safety for her), I told her next time, the door comes down because her safety is more important than her privacy. It's hard as a teen to appreciate that some things parents do, even punishments, are purely in their child's best interest. I definitely didn't get that as a teen but grew up and appreciated that my parents helped me grow up to become a better person because of their interventions. ❤ I acknowledge there are parents who aren't good parents, but I also believe in seeing the good vs the bad if I have the option.

You also practiced responsible parenting and the door was only off for a month as a consequence of your son's actions. That's very different to the paranoid parents a lot of kids have.

I was a sneaky teen with extremely authoritative parents. I've raised 3 kids, and no matter the circumstances, I would not do this to them. It doesn't solve anything or address the issue. It's a power play and nothing more. Treat your kids like property instead of respecting them as autonomous individuals and see where that gets you

That was for constant slamming - I can see how it made some sense. "Privacy isn't necessary" is a poor reason, especially when there was no discussion beforehand.
