The newest Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s yearbook proudly features 14 adorable, fluffy dogs who happily posed for their pictures. However, they are not ordinary dogs. To cope with the tragic shooting that took place on school grounds on February 14, 2018, the principal, Ty Thompson, hired 14 therapy dogs. One year after the tragedy, the important work these four-legged friends did was commemorated in the school’s yearbook.

The Stoneman Douglas High School shooting which took place in Parkland, Florida, is considered to be the deadliest high school shooting in the history of the United States.

The gunman’s killing spree claimed the lives of 17 students and staff members and also injured 17 others. It surpassed the Columbine High School massacre that killed 13 people in 1999.

Weeks after the attack, resilient students and faculty began coming back to their classrooms. The school’s principal, Ty Thompson, made sure that shocked and traumatized children would receive the best possible comfort during lessons, thus introducing therapy dogs.

The idea was well received. Students and faculty members instantly fell in love with these four-legged heroes who were there to help them heal.

And while it’s understandable what a heavy burden it is to create a yearbook just one year after the gruesome tragedy, the staff made a perfect choice to commemorate the silent healers, 14 therapy dogs, of those who survived a despicable attack on their lives.
