Parents Install Hidden Camera In Daughter’s Home To Police Intercourse, Spark Furious Fallout

Having some sort of video or audio recording device to check up on your child is pretty normal. In 2017, 75% of parents in the U.S. said they use a baby monitor. 39% of those parents said they use a monitor with a camera. It seems appropriate when the child is a toddler, but when the child is older, that becomes a serious privacy violation.

This woman, for example, was 25 when she found out her parents were keeping tabs on her with a hidden nanny cam. When her boyfriend found it at their condo, she confronted them. Their excuse was wanting to make sure she wasn’t being intimate with her boyfriend. Appalled and hurt beyond reason, the woman asked for advice online on what to do next.

A camera can be a good way to keep tabs on your child when they’re a toddler, not so much when they’re a grown adult

The legality of recording someone with a nanny cam depends on where they live and whether it’s video-only

Many people in the comments pointed out that the woman should go to the police as this is a pretty serious privacy violation. Others said that what the parents did was actually illegal since nanny cams might be illegal in some states and countries.

In the U.S., for example, nanny cams are legal in all 50 states, but they come with some strings. Recording people without their knowledge in bedrooms and bathrooms, for example, is illegal. In fact, recording anyone with audio equipment without their knowledge can be a crime.

That’s what people need to consider before getting a nanny cam or any other type of video or audio recording device. It all depends on where you live and whether you’re recording only the video or the audio too. The laws around audio recording are much tougher.

38 states in the U.S. allow people to record audio with the consent from one person in the conversation. Two-party consent is required in the other 11: California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington. Vermont, on the other hand, doesn’t have laws that prohibit recording audio, so people consider it to be a one-party consent state.

In the UK, for example, nanny cams are legal as long as the person who’s being recorded is aware of it. “The short and sweet answer is, yes, you can get them – no, they’re not illegal, providing you put everything openly, and you tell the people that are going in that there’s a nanny cam in there,” security expert Steve Wood explained to the Daily Mail.

Recording someone in private spaces like a guest room, bedroom, or bathroom would definitely be illegal. And recording someone in a living room might be a grey area since it’s a common space. However, putting a camera in someone else’s home to spy on them changes the whole situation, probably making the parents liable to legal consequences.

Cutting contact with parents is easier said than done

Overbearing parents tend to violate privacy boundaries often. This case is quite extreme, of course, but some mothers and fathers who were overprotective while bringing their kids up might maintain the same tendencies once the child is an adult. Many people in the comments asked the OP why she hasn’t cut contact with her parents after repeated violations like this.

In reality, that’s easier said than done. People don’t understand the boyfriend’s stance on trying to maintain contact with the parents, yet it’s easy for strangers on the Internet to urge someone to go no-contact with their parents. Actually taking the step requires much more work and thought.

As Kate Stoddard, LMFT, told HuffPost, leaving your parents is terrifying. Still, she says, it’s better to try making the relationship healthier. “You may be living with this fear of loss, doing things out of guilt that you don’t want to do and then feeling resentful, or feeling controlled or beholden to others,” Stoddard explains.

When confronting parents about setting boundaries, it’s crucial to be assertive. Alyssa Mancao, LCSW, also recommends the “broken record” technique: “Repeat your needs clearly and concisely over and over.” She also advises people to be patient, as change in behavior doesn’t happen overnight. If nothing gives, well, then maybe going no-contact is the way to go.

The author clarified that the parents weren’t this controlling growing up, but everything changed when she got a boyfriend

Most people were appalled at the parents’ disregard for their adult daughter’s privacy

This is creepy enough, I'd be willing to pay for a professional to come search the place. Surely there's enough creepy stalkers in the world for there to be people who specialize in doing these kinds of searches for cameras or trackers or whatever? Or would the police do it if you reported it as a crime? Anybody know?

I'm sorry but w/ parents like that you are better off alone. Check out the rest of your place, There may be other devices to listen in on your conversations or spy on you. I'd get a doorbell camera.,a burglar alarm and change your locks. My place I'm staying has a 2 system lock. You can use both a key and any electric number code if you forget your keys. Only give the numbers to the boyfriend. Your parents will think that it's numeric only and that the keyhole is for appearances. Then I would cut contact with them. If you are foolish enough to continue to stay in contact with them, keep your contact with them not coming to your place. Keep your future kids away from them as well or you never know what messed up stuff they will pull on them. Also check out your cars for air tags or tracking devices. My BF was helping someone by taking them their car and had to make a side for 1 minute. I got a phone call from the owner of the car.Asking why he was stopped at the location. ( He knew exactly what street he was on which was in a shopping center. If it was you, could you imagine being at a specific location and them knowing the exact location and hassling you or showing up at that location?) They are overdoing this stuff and it's illegal to do what they did.

Is there any way of doing a sweep of your home to see if there are any more nanny cams possibly installed? They physically found the one but is there any way to find out if there's more using some kind of tracking device or would you see it so connected to your internet somehow? Honest question. I don't know. Because that's what I would want to check for to make sure there isn't a duplicate camera, for peace of mind. Then, I would change the locks, install a camera at my front door (that way you know who is entering your home), and reduce or cut the contact with the parents who are obviously very controlling and or racist. I've always been grateful for my parents but when I read something like this I'm even more grateful. I got a lock on my door when I was a teenager, they let me plaster posters everywhere and pretty much do whatever I wanted in my room as long as it wasn't disgusting. I would absolutely press charges and get a restraining order, but that's just me. Since they're seemingly not pressing charges, I would install MY OWN cameras in the apartment, then do the usual change locks/demand keys back. If they are stupid enough to break into the apartment again, there would be surveillance footage to take to the authorities. I would have called the cops the moment I found the camera. Then when I got a confession from them, gone completely NC, which includes getting married at the courthouse with only my best friends there to bear witness. If the wedding has already been planned and paid for, I'd simply keep the venue and throw a reception. You know that they'll show up if they're disinvited, simply take away their witnessing of their daughter's wedding. People this obsessed with their little girl would be hurt by that. Good.

Firstly in the United States, check your state. Some states are a one party state where you don't need the other party's permission to record. Secondly, even if you are in a two party state, be sure to state your name, and even better to do it on FaceTime. When you are part of the video it is legal, think police body cams, no permission needed. And these laws only apply in a court of law, you can use the evidence to show the police. IANAL (I am not a lawyer) but have been through this and know a bit. And yes, you can stop all contact. You are an adult. Non compliant? This isn't handmaiden's tale. WTH? Girl, get away from them. Stay safe. They sound dangerous.

Report it to the police. Let them know your parents admitted to doing it and why. One of two things happen: they'll follow up and ask them in which case they admit or not. Or they don't. But having it on record will make it easier to deal with them when they inevitably try to trespass and force their way in your house to "discuss" things. This is all about a paper trail at this point. And you need to go hard NC. This is such an extreme invasion of your privacy. I can't imagine ever having trust in them again.

I suggest that, if you find another nanny cam, take your bf in front of it. Then, if it's live streamed to your parents, call 'em after and ask if they enjoyed the show, then go no contact.

Invite a friend with a kid over to stay the night. Go to police the next day and claim the camera showed up while your parents visited after you told them you would have a child at the house. Express concern regarding their unethically located cameras "where the child would be sleeping" to the police, and watch how quickly they get off their a*s and trace the source to Mom and Dad.

I realize there is often a need. I realize it sometimes may be an excellent idea. However, it is incredibly difficult for me to wrap my head around the sheer number of people who can so easily just say, "call the police and file a report"; "go no contact. Immediately remove them from your life forever!" about parents. I know there are some REALLY bad parents in the world. But no matter how bad they are, it is normal for children to want the love, comfort and approval of their parents. So when people say these things it seems as though it should be easy and no hesitation. Like I said, I do understand there are situations where it is the best thing all around. But the number of people who seem to think it's easy and not a big deal seems astronomical to me. That any offspring can so easily dismiss a relationship with their parents is concerning to me. Like.... ending a friendship of 6 months for some seems like it would take more consideration than cutting off their parents.

The camera is just the latest abuse of a series of other, long time abuses for sure.

Depending on where you are, recording conversations is not illegal. And if Op cares about her fiance at all, go NC on parents. They are very disrespectful and intrusive. No one should have people like that in their lives

Anyone else read the headline and think for some reason police officers were having sex and being caught on the cam?

Aside from everything else that is seriously sick. What sort of sick fvcks are obsessed with their kid's ex life? It sound like extreme control issues with a side of incestuous tendencies.

This could be considered an illegal wiretap, which is a federal offense. She wants to go NC, she should, but she needs to make a report, I'd go to the FBI, since that's their jurisdiction.

Am I the only one who says call the cops and press charges? These are obviously "law abiding" type people. Time for them to learn what actually obeying the law means

Well, you know what you gotta do. Put on some porn and aim the camera at the screen.
