Old Faithful: Warm And Intimate Photos Of Really Old Dogs
Photographer Pete Thorne has discovered that just as the elderly can make for powerful portrait photography subjects, the same can be said for old dogs as well. His “Old Faithful” photo series takes a warm and intimate look at man’s best friends as they live out their golden years.
Each senior dog’s aged face tells the story of a life filled with ups and downs. There are more than 50 photos in the series, but it looks like we can expect many more – Thorne, who is based in Toronto, collects inquiries from people who want him to photograph their “really, really old family dogs.”

“Last year my grandmother turned 100 (now 101!), and I became interested in photographing older family pets after a trip to Halifax to photograph her birthday party,” Thorne told Bored Panda.
“It occurred to me… that I should photograph old dogs as they are generally overlooked by photographers in favor of cute puppies. Don’t get me wrong, I love puppies too.”
“I shot Clovis shortly after his 14th birthday and sadly he passed away not too long after this portrait was taken.”

“To photograph these beautiful dogs, I usually request that the owner bring their dog’s favorite treats and toys to help focus their attention. This doesn’t always work as a lot of these old doggies are blind or deaf, possibly both.”
“I found that the trick for a great dog photography shot is to direct the owner; the dog will follow. It can be quite a comical scene. I’ll be low on the ground firing off shots from my camera while the owner is crawling around on the floor with me trying to get the dog pointed in the right direction.”
“The testimonials, often quite touching and humorous, have inadvertently become a big part of the project. I now encourage participants to submit something written about their dog when they contact me about participating in the project.”
“It wasn’t until I started hearing about dogs that I had photographed passing away and having their owners notify me, telling me about their loss, that I realized just how significant and close people become with their pets.”
“Meet Hazel. She was named after Hazel McCallion, the Mayor of Mississauga. This tough old gal had both her eyes removed due to pain and no tear production and has 5 microchips from being re-chipped every time she was sold to a new puppy mill. Luckily she was rescued and adopted by Blanche Axton.”

“Mance is a 13yr Old English Bulldog, a breed close to my heart. He has bone cancer that adds a lot of character to his face. He’s in a pretty fragile state so I made my first trip out of the home studio to photograph him, in all his asymmetrical charm.”

Wow....I want to be very clear when I say ...if your dog is aging like this..... it's not age that's killing them..... it's a microbial overgrowth! 1. Sores around the eye nose and mouth .. or anywhere are not normal. 2. Loss of an eye or retinas detaching is not normal. 3. Hair loss is not normal 4. Rashes and red inflamed skin are not normal 5. Loosing the black color on the nose and around the eyes to look almost pink or crusted over is not normal!!! 6. Carterax is not normal 7. Skin burning black is not normal!!! (especially tips of the ears) WE HAVE OVER THE YEARS TURNED THESE HORRID SYMPTOMS INTO "THE NORM" .... BUT THESE THINGS ARE NOT NORMAL. ALL except 1 (red head pug mix) of these dogs are being eaten alive and their owners are letting it happen. HEAL YOUR PET IF THEY ARE SUFFERING LIKE THESE babies. I just love dog's, ALL dog's, and these elderly pup's are just as cute and sweet as any puppy is. It's a really raw deal that they live such short lives compared to us human's. I have a 4 year old American Bulldog and I hope he lives a LONG LONG time because he is everything to me and more. The animal's are the greatest gift I can think of and my life would be so much poorer without them.

Somebody that understands how special, appreciated and loved these fur babies are. A "donated" (sad word) little 7 year old poodle came into our life for five years. Prissy had diabetes and the most loving little heart that she gratefully gave to us. She went blind, but that never stopped her spirit, the most brave of them all. We lost her a year ago and still have, and always will, a broken heart.

I would have loved to have had my Rat Terrier "Jake" photographed like this. He set the Guinness World Record for "oldest dog living" on July 21, 2015...the day he turned 21 years old. He has since crossed The Rainbow Bridge but his Guinness World Record certificate hangs in my dining room as a lasting memory of an incredible little dog. I miss him very much...and I tell my Rat Terrier "Cooper"...whom I adopted a few months after "Jake" passed...all about his "big brother". my-rat-ter...ea540e.jpg

I love these pictures of senior fur-babies...I volunteer for a rescue group in Connecticut and I never understand how some can surrender their senior fur-babies MANY times they say the reason is because they want a puppy or they're just not wanted anymore...unless they are too sick we keep them until they find forever homes. A month or so ago someone brought in a terrier mix that is 8 years old...when the person left that poor dog sat and stared toward the direction that they left for hours and cried which had me crying!

I rescue as many older, deaf, blind canines as I can financially support. These babies were "surrendered" by "devoted" owners because they were to old & not cute & cuddly anymore. My babies have a good life being loved & spoiled but it is I who am blessed to have them in my life. Thank you for sharing these photos of these beautiful babies & God bless you for doing this.

I rescue as many old, blind,deaf canines as I can financially handle. Right now have 5 dogs ...all cast offs by their "devoted" owners. These babies are loved & spoiled beyond belief. I LOVE older animals. Thank You for showing the world these touching photos & God bless you.

cats too. We have a 17 year old from a kitten - I watched her being born and helped mum cut her kittens umbilical cords as she did not know what to do. Mum no longer with us but Bonnie is. She gets to eat whenever she wants and has her own incontinence pads in a pillowcase as she sometimes gets into such a deep sleep she forgets to wake up to wee...

Wow....I want to be very clear when I say ...if your dog is aging like this..... it's not age that's killing them..... it's a microbial overgrowth! 1. Sores around the eye nose and mouth .. or anywhere are not normal. 2. Loss of an eye or retinas detaching is not normal. 3. Hair loss is not normal 4. Rashes and red inflamed skin are not normal 5. Loosing the black color on the nose and around the eyes to look almost pink or crusted over is not normal!!! 6. Carterax is not normal 7. Skin burning black is not normal!!! (especially tips of the ears) WE HAVE OVER THE YEARS TURNED THESE HORRID SYMPTOMS INTO "THE NORM" .... BUT THESE THINGS ARE NOT NORMAL. ALL except 1 (red head pug mix) of these dogs are being eaten alive and their owners are letting it happen. HEAL YOUR PET IF THEY ARE SUFFERING LIKE THESE babies. I just love dog's, ALL dog's, and these elderly pup's are just as cute and sweet as any puppy is. It's a really raw deal that they live such short lives compared to us human's. I have a 4 year old American Bulldog and I hope he lives a LONG LONG time because he is everything to me and more. The animal's are the greatest gift I can think of and my life would be so much poorer without them.

Somebody that understands how special, appreciated and loved these fur babies are. A "donated" (sad word) little 7 year old poodle came into our life for five years. Prissy had diabetes and the most loving little heart that she gratefully gave to us. She went blind, but that never stopped her spirit, the most brave of them all. We lost her a year ago and still have, and always will, a broken heart.

I would have loved to have had my Rat Terrier "Jake" photographed like this. He set the Guinness World Record for "oldest dog living" on July 21, 2015...the day he turned 21 years old. He has since crossed The Rainbow Bridge but his Guinness World Record certificate hangs in my dining room as a lasting memory of an incredible little dog. I love these pictures of senior fur-babies...I volunteer for a rescue group in Connecticut and I never understand how some can surrender their senior fur-babies MANY times they say the reason is because they want a puppy or they're just not wanted anymore...unless they are too sick we keep them until they find forever homes. A month or so ago someone brought in a terrier mix that is 8 years old...when the person left that poor dog sat and stared toward the direction that they left for hours and cried which had me crying!

I rescue as many older, deaf, blind canines as I can financially support. These babies were "surrendered" by "devoted" owners because they were to old & not cute & cuddly anymore. My babies have a good life being loved & spoiled but it is I who am blessed to have them in my life. Thank you for sharing these photos of these beautiful babies & God bless you for doing this.

I rescue as many old, blind,deaf canines as I can financially handle. Right now have 5 dogs ...all cast offs by their "devoted" owners. These babies are loved & spoiled beyond belief. I LOVE older animals. Thank You for showing the world these touching photos & God bless you.

She gets to eat whenever she wants and has her own incontinence pads in a pillowcase as she sometimes gets into such a deep sleep she forgets to wake up to wee...

I lost my old lady in 2013 at 15 yrs old. Miss her everyday. I still have 4 seniors who is 15 1/2, 14, 10 and 7.

We just lost our old doggie girl a month ago :-( in some ways, she still looked like our baby. She gained a white eyebrow in her old age.
