It’s the template of almost every men’s fashion ad ever to be published; a handsome, sharply-dressed man flouts about glamorous settings while a submissive, fully or nearly naked woman fawns over him. Suistudio, a women’s suit-making company, is turning this tired old trope over on its head with their latest ad campaign, fittingly titled “Not Dressing Men.”

The titular name alludes not only to the fact that Suistudio’s sleek, timeless suits are produced exclusively for women, but also to the use of nude male models in their racy promotional photos. The images show various well-outfitted women in positions of power and dominance, while the men featured act as mere background scenery; as furniture. It’s a clever reversal of the sexist ideologies that seem to plague society at every turn, but it’s not going over well with absolutely everyone.

Some are accusing Suistudio vice president Kristina Barricelli and her advertising team of promoting the very forms of human objectification that they claim to abhor. According to an email sent to Upworthy, however, Barricelli describes her company’s work as a “call to viewers to reconsider the rigid gender roles reinforced through advertising over the years.” Scroll down to decide for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Drawing on sexist tropes from men’s fashion ads, the photos feature naked men as background scenery

    Almost like furniture

The women, however, appear dominant and powerful, rather than submissive and vulnerable

In modern advertising, it’s usually the other way around

Suistudio vice president Kristina Barricelli wants viewers of the ads to see “rigid gender roles” differently…

But is objectification of a human, male or female, ever acceptable?

Some people definitely think not, and are calling it a step in the wrong direction for feminism

Others, however, positively received the message

I have exactly as much problem with using naked men in an ad campaign as with using naked women. None at all. Tought I can understand people who have problem with both, but not those who have problem with one of them but perfectly fine with the other.

Yep. Most men, including me, don't really care. Almost nobody's provoked, because men usually don't care much about stupid ads, and they are used to be presented as imbeciles in most ads.

Good message? Of course not! Good food for thought? Oh yeah! Let's think of it as an invitation to empathize, for men to try and immagine themselves in our shoes. Does this make you feel uncomfortable? Well, guess what... I dunno wether this will be effective in the way I'm telling about it, and I DO NOT wish for this to be the new marketing standard, but from an artistic and philosophic point of view, you can't deny this is interesting. It makes you think, it brings people to discuss. And btw, we don't need to do this step for the sake of feminism, what we need is simply treating all models with respect in their marketing rappresentations as well as in their personal/professional lives, but I do have a feeling that sometimes projects like these are neccessary. It's a waking slap on the face of society.

Ok, but I think an issue you'll find is most men, like me, aren't offended by this any way so it doesn't really have the impact they were looking for.

I´m not seeing much problem with these ads for a simple reason, I don´t get the feeling the men are the womens slaves as women tend to be för men in ads, they are put in sexually harrassing positions, these men are more of a fancy statue in the womans fancy homes, and myself have no problem with the naked body, yes they are in a way just eyecandy for the women in that sense, only there for their pleasure, but the women aren´t doing much negative to them, the men looks pretty free to roam the house all nude without being much controled.

"they are someone's brothers and sons.. " oh really? Because naked women in ads are not sisters and daughters. They are created by some kind of 3D printer and they are connected to nobody...

So nothing is said when everyday you see half or full naked women being objectified, but when the tables are turned you label all women as feminazi, what happened is the medicine bitter when you had to gulp it?

Love it. It hits the mark of a good suits Elkington campaign and will speak to powerful women. It may or not have somthing to do with feminism and if it does, there's not only one single predetermined way to get there. In comparison to male suit campaigns, they are a bit more tame and tasteful, mainly to reinforce the women's sense of power than to put as much boobs as possible in the ad. And finally for the people above who commented so negatively. Feminism means that a woman could, would and should do what she wants. Not what's demanded from her from the society. Two, honey, those men don't have the wallets, the women do. Three, look back at other suit campaigns. These are quite tasteful and the woman is the center of attention. I think you're starting to have body image issues. Don't worry all us gals have them after being confronted with a beautiful naked woman's body in a cheese commercial. Suistudio, you gals are awesome!

The problem is not objectification but knowing the difference between fantasy and reality. I don't see anything bad in half-wishing for some perfect scenarios where all our needs are satisfied nor in enjoying those dreams recreated in any medium. It's bad if you project those fantasies onto real people and feel entitled to have them fulfilled. Many men are very entitled and feel women owe them, or world owes them, hard to tell. Plenty of women feel like that too, although slightly different rules apply. I'm not sure if banning fantasies is the best way to go.

The better way would be have a men behind, yes. But not naked.. From my point of view, it looks like just a "You did it to us, we did it to you !"... Wich is pointless. Feminism is about Equality, yes. That makes the thing "Equal" but... Every "equality" is not good to make cause it can make the things worst.

The point is not to display men in retaliation, the point is to display men as illustration. Many people will not get the point that these sorts of ads are wrong, regardless of sexes displayed, until they are confronted with actuality. If you actually shoot the ads and use them? They cannot retreat into making it all an intellectual thought experiment. It's there, making them realize they don't like it when the shoe's on the other foot,

Maybe I just haven´t noticed it, but I honestly don´t remember the last time when I´ve seen a completely naked woman in an ad. Definitely some naked skin, both women and men, but not completely naked with just covering their private parts. I´m myself against objectification of both women and men.

I think having naked people in ads - male OR female - is a complete fail. Who cares what the clothed person is wearing, all any viewer is going to see is the naked body. And just because it's not ok to objectify women, it doesn't mean it's ok to objectify men. This makes feminists no different or better than the men who objectified women. We will never move on from the mistakes of the past if people keep going out and making the same mistakes, allegedly to prove a point. The only point they proved is that they themselves are as sexist as the men they protest. Congratulations.

I was on a college campus the other day. The way the young women there were dressed was pretty shocking. Teeny shorts, itty bitty skirts, barely there tops without undergarments. I guarantee most of the men present were completely happy with the situation, other than some of the dads! If we can accept and even encourage this kind of attire in women then why would we be squeamish about ads with bare males? I am NOT a feminist but I do see hypocrisy in any offense taken to these ads when no one even notices bare women anymore. Guess I wish they would ALL leave something to the imagination...

Why is this viewed as dehumanizing? If anything we are focused on the human aspects of the model as opposed to the "dehumanizing" role of just being a hangar upon which designers place their wares. Showing a naked man, or woman, is appreciation of HUMAN beauty.

This campaign is also a hint towards the past. SuitStudio is owned by the company Suitsupply, which caters to men and have been doing so for 15-20 years now. It was a nice start-up making well tailored fashionable suits affordable. They grew rapidly and they are not some label from some billion dollar company. They have had similar ad campaigns for over a decade with men in suits and naked women. And it works: everybody who has been to this company (they have shops in quite some business cities now) can recognize the company from the way the pictures are made. It's typical that people start judging and talking about the Feminism part of the campaign. It is a campaign to sell Suits to women. It is for business-women who complain that it is so much harder to find affordable good looking business clothing.

It's not to even the score. It's to show men what many women feel, because being in someone's shoes is often a turning point for many. You feel humiliated? Good, it was the point. Now change OR help changing if you aren't one of the a******s.

I don’t have a problem with the ads themselves. Using naked men instead of naked women is not a problem to me. The problem I have is the mentality of the feminists who call this social awakening. Using the same social tactics of the enemies you say you abhor you makes you no better than them. I’ve said the same about white face. Just admit you were you were looking at the dollar signs and be done with it.

Good grief. It's not that the man is naked. It's that he allows a woman to put her high heel on what makes him male. It's on purpose to devalue his manhood. Now the other way around, men are not interested in placing their shoe on a woman's vaginal opening and devaluing her femaleness. We want women to be all female! Nasty women these days don't want men to be men, so much so they act afraid if a man's penis is exposed.

I wonder what percentage of men were ever paid less, not taken seriously, told their reproductive decisions were a national policy matter, been discouraged from certain lucrative careers, been sexually harassed or worse simply because of how they look, where they work, where they walk, or what route they take home from work, etc, etc. The reason that using women in this fashion is wrong is that it reinforces oppression. Does it do the same when it is men?

No. Hate it. It IS objectification, call it what you want. These pics are not like the ones usually seen in ads where women admittedly are objectified. These go beyond a woman in a bikini or seductive dress. (Ok, not sure about pics showing the back view of thongs... similar to these.) The women remind me of those women from the '80's who wore loopy 'ties' with their pantsuits, in an attempt to show how equal they were. Yes, I have done so. Ugh. I think these ads could have sent the same message without sensational nudity. Even a dude in a speedo might be better, at least he's wearing something! Or perhaps in shorts, as the 'abs' are a big draw for some women. But stepping on his thing in boots? Wayy over the top. Tone it down - this isn't 'feminism.'

No nudity should be used as selling material.. The message was sent clearly, and apparently we might never notice this unless it was the positions flipping, naked males in our state. Pretty clever idea, even better pretty creative campaign for both morale and sales.

None of these ads would make me want to buy the suit. The women look more like dominatrices than anything else. These ads are more of a reversal of Shades of Grey than anything else.

I was honestly having trouble finding any ads where a man is "flouting about in glamorous settings" while a naked or half naked woman drools all over him. Usually it's a woman by herself doing her thing. Yes, there were a few ads that fit the description but I had to really look for them. So I wouldn't say the roles are reversed at all. Maybe if the man was by himself and half naked or fully nude, then sure. But as it is now...I disagree.

What I find weird is that everybody is screaming about sexism when guys are naked and in weak positions, but nobody lifts even an eye brow when women are. Hypocrisy at its finest! I think it does the men who likes too look att womens bodies in ads a world of good, to suddenly find themselves in the very place of women. Maybe we will see a change, and not use women's bodies gratuitously to sell s**t. Grow the f**k up!!

Umm, was this supposed to be provocative? I saw a naked guy voluntarily in a room with the women he chooses to be with. From a meta standpoint, there's a model who just made more money in a day than I'll make in a week to pose naked in an ad with good looking models. If I was supposed to feel uncomfortable, I don't. It's a picture depicting a grown man who made his own decisions which has nothing to do with me. If it was meant to sell something, I expect it was meant to appeal to a target demographic that would be interested in that product. So in essence...that had no effect on me. Except I did laugh a little because I get the impression I'm supposed to walk away feeling hurt or uncomfortable somehow. I'm thinking most other guys don't care either. But then, I'm also the kind of guy who doesn't get offended by women buying calendars with male firefighters to suit their fantasies. To each his or her own. Live and let live.

You feminists like to try to drive you all's point home by putting "extras on it!" But what you all are doing isn't equivalent! Many women have a habit of warping the reality! And that's not justice! It's deceit and lies!

    Rahim Shabazz

The problem with feminists is! They do not contrast their points equivalently gender for gender! Meaning, those women will say things like, "how would you feel if someone talked to your mother or sister like that?" And the truth is, if you're a man trying to holla at a woman, that woman is not your mother nor your sister! She's not your relative! What man likes the idea of any man trying to get in good with their mother or sister? See the logic?! Many of you feminists use talking points that don't match up evenly when it comes to making you all's points about y'all mistreatment from men! Photos of naked men are offensive to straight men if they're plastered all out in the open! Same as nude photos of women would be offensive to straight women if they were plastered out in the open for them to see! Plastering nude photos of men out in the open is not the same as nude photos of women in a magazine or in privately designated source material!

This AD campaign is done very tastefully and celebrates the beauty of the male body. I would love to see more of this in the future. Culturally, we do not celebrate the male form enough. This nakedness is a pure celebration of the male body in all of his wonderful porportions.

We might as well face it: domination is intoxicating and pleasurable. Whether that's a good thing or not is a completely separate issue. Just because alcohol is bad for us doesn't mean we can choose for alcohol to have no effect on us. We can only choose not to drink at all, or drink in a less harmful way.

Yep. Not a thing wrong--so long as we don't go back to sleep and assume that this is 'the fact.' We ARE OBJECTS, however narrow that truth is. Nothing wrong with playing with that, so long as we don't forget to step back and see the person at the right moment.

I donmt think it's appropriate for two reasons: Firstly, if this objectification of men is ok, why isn't it ok to objectify women. Of course, this is the point the flip is meant to convey, BUT; Secondly, if (like me) men don't feel disempowered of denigrated by the photoshoot, they will be more likely to dismiss a woman's objection.

Who cares. From an artistic point of view, the bodies of the presentation are exquisite. The male is worthy of posing for Michelangelo, the women equally representing status, and if one ever doubts Black is Beautiful, one only has to look at the exquisite portrayals and realize spectacular truths!

From an artistic perspective, I just think the ads would look better without the guy. They seem shoved in, like those pictures where someone photoshops themselves into famous photos or something. The first one's pretty good, but the other ones have awkward placement, like the guy is trying to sleep or get out of the house after a one night stand.

I suspect that it's something that needs to happen before advertisers will take the need to STOP OBJECTIFYING WOMEN seriously. I mean, really! Ms. Magazine has been running its No Comment section calling out this very feature of advertising, for what? 45 years now. But it seems that we can't just have these realizations about women, we only pay attention when it's about men. SMH

I feel the problem with this situation is the direction from which some people are coming. There seems to be a large body of people who believe that nudity in any form is degradation and that these men, and the women in previous advertisements, should feel bad for some reason. When did we as a collective begin to view the human body as dirty and gross? Why can't we just enjoy the beauty of the human form without someone protesting? My personal opinion is that there is a large body of the human collective that needs to get over its own self-loathing and just enjoy the beauty that is the human form.

To be honest, i doubt most guys care about this at all. They might not look at the magazine just because they dont like seeing naked men in general. I think its unneccisary though. You dont need a naked man in the picture to display good clothes. Unfortunately sex sells though and it may bring in readers just to see the naked men. Turning it more into a playboy aimed at women. Its the same reasoning as why men had women in ads like this, so I would say its a little more of a step back. If that wasnt the goal then its basic femenistic revenge which is worse. Yea it is a little Ironic but consider this. If most men collectively believe that belittling women is wrong, then how does most women thinking belittling men is right going to help? You would just be repeating mistakes of the past, not learning from them.

Men just don’t get it. Outraged the way the men were used in the photos. If it had been a woman naked and part of the “scenery”, they wouldn’t see anything wrong. Personally, I don’t ever see a reason in ads or movies for someone to be naked. This ad campaign will make people think but too many will be offended by it to get the point.

People who objectify woman and don’t understand the problem with that behavior will learn nothing from this ad. They are unevolved and underdeveloped in their prefrontal lobe. They lack the ability to empathize and the understanding of what it means to respect people as whole complex individual entities, ultimately because they are empty troubled people themselves. They will only appreciate this ad for the objectification, not for the social comment it’s making. It only reinforces their worldview. Abuse of power is abuse of power in whatever way shape and form it displays itself.

If only gender roles could have been reversed by simply publishing some photographs that show men and women in the other way around. Or, maybe, it's only a way to make people busy with talking about it, maybe, in that way, it's nothing less an advertising trick, than to present a thought-provoking issue for the audience.

Hypersensitive? Pointing out that sexualized male ads has been around as long as female ads have. The Gum commercial where the man turns into a stripper as he eats it, the Kraft commercial series with the man losing his shirt in the kitchen because he's fit, That yogurt ad in the magazine where the naked man is covered in it and the video game, Devil May Cry where the male protaganist walks outside completely naked. I think this is just questioning the gender roles within our society. Girls have always seen as just eye candy in a pic. I don't think its a bad thing for a man to be in the background to let woman shine now and then. We are equal, but I think the play on power makes an image provocative.

I understand people who are yelling that objectifying men or women is the same thing and that it's not acceptable. But you know... There still are (a lot of) ads that are objectifying women and it's still considered « normal »... so here's a campaign that invert the roles in a brutal way and abracadabra people react ! I think we call that irony... and I'm not sure it's a bad thing. You know why : because when we see over sexualized and objectified women in ads, the only goal is to sell, here, they want to sell, for sure (it's an ad after all), but it creates a debate about a problematic issue. I'm not for objectifying people no matter their gender, but I'm fine with this ad for all the reasons I mentionned.

Most of these are just not very good. They look badly photoshopped, every picture except one (with just the legs sticking in) would look better without that random naked body intruding int the image . I do love the black model in those suits. She looks out of this world fantastic. As a politically motivated message the pictures are obviously trying to make a point, but Daria B ist right: Somehow they manage to revolve, once more, around men. Most depressing of all: It's 2017 and we have hardly moved forward since the 1950s.

if this were an ad that was just an ad, it would be pretty offensive. But this ad is making a valid point. Why has there never been this kind of outrage over women's objectification, which STILL happens in advertising? All the bitching and moaning is not a reaction to objectification, it's a reaction to a power shift.

But, and I think this point is pretty telling, the people doing the "bitching and moaning" aren't men reacting to a "power shift." Most men don't see it as a shift of power. It is just a body, and they are okay with it.

If this campaign is successful and does sell clothes to women, what does that prove? It proves that the opposite way (where the women are barely clothed and the men are powerful looking and well-dressed) was also logically sound and valid. Is that really the message we want to send? That to sell clothes (or anything) you have to objectify somebody else? Just because it works? IMHO the attitude of addressing historic misogyny with current misandry will not address the attitude of objectifying and make it go away. All it does (and I hope this was the intent) is hold up a dark mirror and say "See, not nice when the tables are turned, right? Let's not do that anymore, ok?" TBH I never really saw the appeal of having naked women advertise something totally unconnected. Give me a great description and a list of specs over some picturesque ad that tells me nothing about the product anytime.

so whats the big deal. I am a male and the men they use to dres up their displays are hansome and not unkind to the eye. there seems to be some problem with the idea that there may be some sexual mesage involved here. of course there is so lets step away from the FACT that there is something wrong with sexuality in the first place, there is nothing wrong with it. Normal women who are the target here after all epreciate the sight of a handsome fit man a lot more then I do so geting some dopamine flowing to make them feel good while veiwing the products on display is a good idea. In the end it is up to every person male or female to be somehow put of by sexuality or not. they do after all have their own mind. if you dont like it dont look.

Speaking in general, the problem is that in many cases they don't really have a choice. Surviving needs money and then you have dream career goals. And then you get forced to "willingly" become a tool. Sure no need to sign the contract, but that means no job for you. Might be less of a problem with already successful and established models, but are we sure they didn't need to swallow lots of c**p before reaching that point....

The men in the ads seem to be ok with it so why shouldn't I? Some guys like having their balls crushed by heels. I'm not one of them, but the dude in the 1st pick doesn't look like he's trying to get away so if that's his thing more power to him. Likewise with the rest of them. None of them are tied up with a gun to their head.

I like that this campaign is challenging our perceptions of what is right or wrong (or - what is the content that we are used to or not) but it's againsy my belief that feminism is about gender equality. And this campaign uses the same tools they are against to.

While the Ads are interesting and the suits well made, I dont think making women reverse roles is the answer, especially when the roles objectified the other person. Frankly I didnt see female strength, It felt more like they were pimps with their arm candy. Advertisers dont need to be gimmicky if the Product is amazing.

I don't see the problem. If it helps sell those suits (one of the women is wearing jeans. Really?), cool. Furthermore, don't forget that quite a few of the ad campaigns that are selling men's suits with women in the background are put together by women.

I'm confused, wasn't the point of these to show those still living in the stone ages how wrong it is, or was it used as an official ad? Because people are losing their s**t without realising what hypocrites they are when they accept the gender flipped version on a daily basis as a norm.

I think its well done advertisement it's beautiful. And no I'm not saying because of the bare models... That's just what they are. To be honest I don't really care much about whose baring it or not... It could be female's up there instead of men and it would still be beautiful. See it's just a job for these people and they look like they are enjoying... In this time and she where everyone is a critic. It doesn't matter who is the one to bare all... People will find everything wrong with something generally this is no satisfying anyone. It will always be feminism vs misogynism. People like to make a big deal about everything. When it comes down to these things it is the people who are working doing thier job and they made thier choices. I think its beautiful.

I absolutely love the idea. It is a commentary on the hypocrisy in our society that is just now in a place enough to even be called out. Commentaries like this are very artful and I for one applaud the intent. THANK YOU!!! For those who don’t mind the “beautiful” half-naked women in adverts, movies, and video games because “they are beautiful” ... you are missing the sexism expressed by them. It is almost always an unattractive, older, wealthy male with a young, supple, and sexually suggestive female. If you can’t see the prevelance of that pattern, it may be because you have a genuine appreciation for her beauty, but it may also be because you have been raised to believe this is how it should be. Either way, that is a part of what causes future generations to grow up and continue to perpetuate the oppressive gender roles. Well, Im glad things are changing and that those in positions of power to do something like this are doing so! ❤️❤️❤️

Really a tough break... In my opinion women have always been dominate in thier roles whether if it was vice versa... They will always have controls of the scene just as much as if they were the ones naked on the couch. If anything Its daring, may anyone forbid it's new, and it's beautifully all together. The clothes are outstanding and so are the n models... It doesn't matter who is the one naked this time... The ones baring themselves will always gain attention in a good way or in a bad way. However even with this advertisement the women still dominates the show... Don't really take it the wrong way I'm not really a feminist... However I don't advocate female's to be restricted as well. We just (like everyone else) will do what we want to do.... Well I try to live my life with no regrets... And modest.

I actually if it isn't a bit counter productive with what they had in mind. Usually, the half naked girls are there to send a message that using the product will get you hot women, which is status.... so doing the opposite, won't it make it also seem like powerful women want power in order to get men? Like instead of "a suit for powerful, confident women", it goes "wear this suit and men will be at your feet".

Is it a very good message in general? Nope. Do we want to still feel badass and not care about others? Yes. If not all ads and everything is about this kind of attitude, I think it's fine. It's a mood, an image, a feeling that these pictures are selling. Dominance. Shall we follow it as an everyday attitude? Nope. But it kinda feels empowering still.

Well done! It's a good and ironic campaign. As usual, if women are represented in this way it'll be offensive, but ironic ..and anyway it always was so. If men are represented in this unusual role - it's a wrong way for feminism. Sometimes it does good, to do this in this way, especially with this kind of irony.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Nearly naked women have been used to sell any range of items, for centuries, and men think nothing of it. I'm glad you put the shoe on the other foot, simply so that men can experience it, and see how it makes them feel.

The only problem is when only one sex, race, whatever is used constantly as the object. When both are, in highly stylized ad campaigns, there is NO PROBLEM. Women have been used as objects much to much, and also subjected to a lot of photo-shopped unreal expectations (I have a lot more problems w/body shaming for both sexes, in fact). THIS campaign is just fine

I think I’m going to save my outrage for cases where a man rapes a 12 year old girl and 9 years later, he’s awarded joint custody of the resulting child. Or the privileged college kid who was found guilty of raping a girl behind a dumpster and only gets 3 months. These people are paid to appear in these ads. Nobody forces them to do it.

The women hardly look empowered just cause they are wearing a suit and there are naked dudes in the background. Doesn't look like a sign of power. Still sexualization of both women and men in this add. Kinda gross all around.

I don't understand why people make such a fuss... its called modelling and art... You cant judge or whatsoever, remember everyone sees things differently, and do you like it when people judge the things you do and how you do it? people must grow up, get a life and see the concept and beauty of things in life...

I have no issue with the campaign itself. As a retail message, I have to question the goals and results of the ads. I agree with the tweet above: the central focus is the naked man, not the clothes (which is what is attempting to be sold.

The point of the ad campaign is to make you uncomfortable. It is not trying to say that it is OK to objectify people (men or women), but to show us what it is like when the tables are turned, so that we think twice when we see ads that objectify women.

Where is it that this only ever happened to females?

I don't know why people are upset, This is just as appealing as the flip side. The man in these pics doesn't seem to be unhappy to be there. I don't think this is a feminist thing.

When have they ever used naked women as props in mens' fashion ads, especially dark skinned ones? This a "solution" to a non-existent problem. Just more SJW hate on white males nonsense

I would rather have more nude men in advertising, than fewer nude women! Nice bodies are nice.

Thanks for letting media know that it is completely okay to use women in the exact same way.
