“What’s Normal To Us Now, That In 50 Years People Will Look Back On As Barbaric?” (30 Answers)
Asbestos, indoor smoking and child labor are just some of the things that used to be a lot more common in the past and are, fortunately, less common now. However, it’s still important to note that back then, folks would have thought that these things are very normal parts of everyday life.
Someone asked “What's something that's normal to us now, that in 50 years people will look back on us as barbaric?” and people gave their best suggestions. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote your favorites and be sure to share your own ideas and thoughts in the comments below.

Forcing terminally ill people in constant pain and discomfort to stay alive without the option to be helped to end their lives peacefully and with dignity.
I live in Oregon. We were the first state with a death with dignity law.
Women getting procedures on reproductive organs without pain medication.
My votes are:
Countries that lack universal healthcare.
Environmental neglect.
Keeping aquatic mammals in captivity for entertainment.
Holding entertainers as more important than educators.
For-profit prisons and for-profit health insurance hopefully.
Since the election of DJT stocks in for profit prisons are skyrocketing. Think about what that means.
I think the way we treat the environment will be something future generations look back on and see as barbaric. We’ve been very careless with pollution, waste, and climate change, and in 50 years, they might wonder how we didn’t do more to protect the planet when we knew the damage we were causing.
All for the relentless pursuit of profit. We're trading the next generation and the generations after them's wellbeing for temporary luxury today. BTW we are capable of solving these issues. We healed the hole in the ozone layer. We can fix this but we are choosing not to.
Hopefully child beauty pageants but especially child marriage.
Child beauty pageants put on display the ugliest sort of parent.
The cruelty with which we treat animals.
That's a nice pipe dream. We can't even stop abusing and murdering each other.
Letting people die from lack of medical care because they're poor.
Might be too soon, but the goddamn school shootings. There’s got to be a way out of this.
LESS GUNS! Look at the statistics. If you have a gun in your home there is a 90% chance that it will kill YOU or someone you love. Only 1% of guns kept at home are ever used to stop intruders. Just stop the flow of guns. How about make gun owners have INSURANCE like we do with cars? See how much they like paying $300 a month just to own the damn thing. The 2nd Amendment says a "Well Regulated Militia". That's it. So regulate that Sh!t!
Sadly, using sound logic like this will never convince the gun-heads. (Oh, and it should be Fewer, not Less).
Load More Replies...It's absolutely bloody obvious to the rest of the world but somehow America cannot grasp the concept of NO GUNS. Australia mostly did away with guns (VOLUNTARILY, for any US readers who may scream about our ''civil rights'' being ''taken away'') in 1996. Guess how many mass shootings we've had since?
You people will never understand anymore than I will understand how a person willingly gives up their only means to defend themselves against their government. I will die before I let our government disarm me, I don't know many people who wouldn't. I can count on one hand how many people I know who don't own at least one gun. There are more guns than people in our country, that along with the independent culture of Americans will prevent anything the government could do from even coming close to putting a dent in the number of guns we have.
Load More Replies...If we had a true, functioning democracy here in the US, then yes, there are enough people who would vote for massive change on this issue. But we do NOT have a functioning democracy, so unless the children of the wealthy become as affected as every else's children, things will not change. Please note I am NOT advocating for any child to be harmed in any way, my point is that the wealthy who own and run this country are so far removed from the problems and issues of everyone else, they'll never think about changing anything unless it affects them directly.
American here: It's not (completely) a gun problem. The problem is with parents who don't keep their guns away from their children (proper storage of weapons) and the fact that we have a MAJOR mental health crisis going on here. If people don't notice that a child is having problems big enough that they feel the need to shoot others, that's on the parents, schools, and others who are tasked to take care of these kids. Please don't downvote me. I know we have many more guns available in this country than we really need, but with our culture, that's not going to change. We need to be actively paying attention to each other, and our kids in school, and get help for these people before they get to the point where they feel they have no other choice but to strike out.
It might almost be more feasible to get guns out of America than it would be to implement any sort of concrete mental health safety nets. It's still treated like a taboo or labelled as not a big deal. There was an article on BP just yesterday that highlighted the recent Wisconsion shooter's poor family life and mental health issues and there were a ton of comments in the article below it basically saying "I had a bad childhood and I never killed anyone there's no excuse to shoot people I don't feel sympathy for the shooter". Well yeah, of course that isn't a good reason to shoot people, it's the /cause/ of why she did which is important to figure out. Until people are willing to acknowledge there's an actual crises going on and agree something actually needs to be done, nothing's gonna change on that front.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately it won't stop I think until there are more NRA conventions shootings than school shootings (anf of course a better gun control).
Even then they'd find a way to twist it, drop their useless "thoughts and prayers", and keep the gun culture going.
Load More Replies...Change the insane gun ownership laws in the USA. Things have moved on since 1776 you know.
Yes, they fought and hunted with 'boomsticks' in those years. Not today's semi-automatic weapons.

This U.S the only civilized place on the planet that allows unregulated access to firearms. It will never be fixed because it is baked into too many people’s heads that it is a fundamental human right. Which is absurd. We had ONE mass shooting where I grew up, in April 1996, it was horrific. The government responded by doing a gun buy back program and my people turned their guns in happily and got money for doing so. Because they’re not brainwashed into believing that it is a fundamental right to own an arsenal. Now, if you want a gun back home you can certainly get one. However, we have background checks and safety courses you have to pass before it is allowed and there are no assault weapons you can legally buy.
Well, over half of America loves fear and control. That's why they voted for Trumpf
Load More Replies...There’s a simple way out but people won’t accept - stringently enforced firearm restrictions. Ban gun ownership except in very specific circumstances.
There is a way out.....but your government wants money from Rifle Association, and will not ban guns....so PUTS guns above lives
there is. And every civilized country on Earth has figured it out already.
Factory farming, fur farms, animal experimentation, animal cruelty--all the horrific things we're doing to nonhuman animals that would get you in jail for life if it were done to a human.
I wish I could upvote this 1,239,705 times. Animal agriculture is destroying the planet.
Hopefully, underpaying workers. No one who works full time should only be able to afford a studio apartment and top ramen.
Oh, dear. For minimum wage workers in America, a studio apartment and top ramen is aspirational in every state. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/14/full-time-minimum-wage-workers-cant-afford-rent-anywhere-in-the-us.html
Removing iud without anesthetic
Most uterine medical ‘care’.
Mammography machines. Maybe they'll finally invent an anatomically appropriate machine instead of the torture device?
Horse and dog racing.
I knew someone who thought obedience competitions for dogs were cruelty. Doing obedience training was why my dog was better behaved than your kid and why he behaved better in public places while your kid was running around like a feral animal.
I wish I had the optimism necessary to believe we'll still have a functioning society in 50 years.
I wish I had the optimism necessary to believe we have a functioning society today.
Forcing people whose disabilities prevent them from working to live in poverty--the average amount of a monthly Social Security Disability Insurance benefit check is $1400.
When I looked into fed disability, I learned I didn't qual because you must have less than $2k in "assets" (I have very small 401k). Given current rent, pretty much anyone who saves up for monthly rent is disqualified. Even if I did qualify, my benefit would have been less than $300/mo.
Lack of effective American gun laws, I hope.
We have more guns in the USA than people. I'm talking men women AND CHILDREN! Are we arming pets now? It's nuts!
40 hr work week.
I don't mind 40 hours. But not getting a proper salary is ...
The way companies are using the internet and what its doing to our brains. I mean the constant garbage we consume on the internet and its long term effects on our mental health.
The fact that any child can turn on the TV and find several shows where violence is rife. Oftentime, it's even promoted and glorified, but if a channel shows one teet, it's banned. I've heard this is not the case in Europe, but in the U.S., it damn sure is.
I think the use of single-use plastics for real. The amount of waste we create is crazy, like super barbaric. The future generations will probably be shocked that we didn’t find better solutions sooner.
Over 90% of NFL players getting chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The NFL will be viewed like we view gladiatorial battles now.
Seeing images of children left unattended with electronic devices. Similar to how we see old pictures of children smoking cigarettes today.
Burning fossil fuels for most of our energy.
Every nation should have a plan in place to end fossil fuel. It will end. Right now, with fracking, we're squeezing the orange that is our planet. We will run out of juice. It's not a renewable resource unless you believe some really deranged conspiracy theories.
Any form of circumcision ( male OR female ) that isn't absolutely medically necessary.
Ballet and competitive sports. Have you ever looked up, what it does to a child or an adolescent to do either?
I have no problem with feet, but just looking at a ballerina's bare feet makes me want to throw up. Ouch. And American football and all the deaths and brain injuries!
Load More Replies...Chances are great that we’ll look back at 2024 as the last year of good era. Might well be downhill from here
Transing kids. We're going to look back and on it the way we do frontal lobotomies, and forced sterilization.
100%. Using children as guinea pigs because of a “progressive” agenda.
