The truth is in the eye of the beholder. For Americans, this means endless free refills, red solo cups and supermarket aisles dedicated to an entire kingdom of cereals, sour and crunchy, salty and sweet, family boxes and portion size. For Europeans, this is something they only see during Netflix TV series while shamelessly devouring entire seasons on rainy Sundays.
But in order to find out what cultural differences really stand out as major when comparing the American lifestyle and the rest of the world, one has to look at what people themselves have to say. So we compiled a list of the best answers that reveal what’s totally normal in the US but looks very out-of-this-world in other countries below.
If you have something to add, please hit us in the comment section! And in case you’re in the mood for more culture shocks, check out our previous article on an American living in Italy who shares the incredible USA vs. Italy culture differences she has experienced.

The idolization of politicians. They are public servants, similar to a courthouse clerk or a city hall coordinator. They are not rock stars. You dont need to scream their name, buy their merch, fully commit your life to them and believe everything they say. Just... treat them like public servants. Sure, they get power and position, but hold them accountable when they abuse it. Dont let corporations and politicians take over, the political system is created by the people, FOR the people. It just... boggles the mind.
Listen, no one hates Trump with the pure passion of hell fire the way I do, but there are certain politicians that should be praised for their service. Nelson Mandela for instance, he is a bit more significant than a rock star. Benjamin Franklin, the dude was actually worshiped as a rock star kind of personality, but in France. France loved that dude. JFK proposed the Civil Rights Act, Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves and saved the union. I don't like the cult mentality and unwavering support people develop, but all my heroes are politicians. All of my degrees are in Political Science. The only celebrity I feel passionately about is Robert Plant, other than that, I look up to people like RBG because it means the world to me to see people who dedicate themselves to public service to help others.
No I think your wrong.I f*****g hate trump with all my f*****g heart it will be a cold day in hell when I support him. So no you don't hate him more
Load More Replies...gee, stating the obvious for *any* nation.... (Looking at Russia, where Putin is "god")....
I do agree. Though is that entirely fair in Russia's instance? They have so little say and will get into a hell of a lot more trouble if they are vocally very anti. At least in the US you can stand up and say what you think without fear of state repercussions. Look at what happened in Russia only recently: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55827509
Load More Replies...To a large extent it is though. Nobody in the UK walks around with a "BoJO" or "Starmer" or "Blair" T-shirt, except maybe in an ironic context. The amount of US presidential campaigning merch... From the canonical Obama "Hope" t-shirt down to the MAGA shop, there's not many places (North Korea maybe?) with a similar choice.
Load More Replies...This is not only within the USA, many other countries as well e.g. Russia, China etc etc.
This is caused by the number one thing that drives Americans - greed. All the politicians out there are in it for the money/fame.
YES! The Constitution even says that the purpose of the government is to protect the rights of the people, and if it becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.
Bankruptcy because you went to the hospital
Yes, for someone in Europe, this isn't understandable. I mean, every country has taxes, but in my country you get free healthcare and paid maternity leave for 18 months.
Medical expenses are the leading cause of bankruptcy, around 70% of bankruptcies are due to medical expenses and the majority of those people had health insurance. So even with paying hundreds of dollars a month ($450 per person on average) you still end up losing everything if you get sick. People die all the time because of medical costs. I was talking to my father's hospic nurse and she said she works with a lot of young people who got cancer and couldn't afford treatment.
Load More Replies...This sucks, but ok we get the point, Bored Panda. You’re a broken record. It’s in like every other post. Our healthcare system system sucks. Our politicians - both sides - refuse to come to some sort of agreement on a bill without trying to load it with a bunch of other self serving crap.
I love watching Dr Pimple Popper. But this show could only happen in the US. Elsewhere in the world people would never wait 20 years before finally addressing the problem. In this US the people who come on the show do so because they couldn't afford it before and obviously get it free/cheaper when appearing on TV. So sad..
Rancho is right. If Obama hadn't immediately caved to Republicans about adding Medicare as a public option, health care would be in much better shape.
Bankruptcy due to ilness is a thing in EU as well. Yes, we got The medical costs covered. But it can still do a huge amount of economic damage when you get to sick to work.
It's strange that the taxes there are rather largely used for armaments and hardly for the health of the citizens. It should be possible, to put 10% of military spending into urgent medical care.
A lot of this depends on your doctor and hospital.

When you are 18 years old, you can be shipped to a foreign country to kill humans, but you are not allowed to drink alcohol.
and most likely you gotta go kill those other people because they are a bit different and don't believe in drinking alcohol
Let's just agree that war is s**t and it just shows how primitive and backwards humans still are.
Load More Replies...Strange isn't it? You are allowed to get your head blown to bits but cannot drink in a bar....
This one makes sense in a utilitarian aspect. Brains aren't fully formed at 18 and can be negatively affected by alcohol more so than when it is fully formed. At the same time, brains aren't fully formed at 18 and thus can be molded into a better soldier easier than a fully formed brain.
That's exactly the problem. 16 yr old will gladly get behind the wheel drunk, and lacks critical thinking skills.
Load More Replies...Also only way to get an education , housing, and medical subsidies from the government for many
It is almost as strange in my country. At 16 you can actually join the Army or any of the Armed Forces. You can, younger than this, receive training in the 'Cadet Force' You can't be sent to the front line until your 18th birthday though and then, at least, you CAN have a drink
To find out more about what an American living abroad had to say about cultural differences, Bored Panda reached out to Kacie Burns, actor and dancer from Canton, Michigan, who has been documenting her daily adventures after moving to live in Florence, Italy. Kacie has a whopping 479.6K followers on her TikTok, where she has amassed 12.9M likes for her fun and lighthearted videos.
Having lived in Europe for quite some time now, Kacie has confirmed that American culture is really different from European in so many ways. “Everything from what they eat to how they dress to what they value to culture/society norms—and then it differs even further when you look at the cultural differences between different European countries,” Kacie told us.
Gratuitous violence in entertainment is normal. But show one boob and people lose their [minds].
Completely untrue. There are parts of American society where nudity is an issue, but those people have just as much issue with violence. I think the mainstreaming of violent movies, vs the share associated with sexuality and nudity is interesting, but the above statement would have you believe that all Americans love violet movies, but hate porn. I think the internet proves this untrue.
It's not even the female breast that freaks out the Puritans - it's just the little nipples.
it's called "history". Europe's Puritans relocated to the now-US. Angry repressed white guys, anyone? ....
Over sexualization of female breasts, love it... a woman can't even breast feed her child in public without glances or scoffs. Often told to do that at home or in the F***ING BATHROOM! I hate most people in my country. I'm no peach but this is one of the multitude of things I hate about people in the US.
Why the big amount of flat-earth and antivax people?? Is your education system not doing well??
Also home schooling. I'm sure there are a lot of patents who give their children a way better education at home than they would get at school, but the fact that it cannot be controlled and some mega religious or flat earther can teach their kids bullshit is really concerning to me.
Homeschooling is such a tricky thing. If done well you get a better quality education than anywhere else...if done poorly you basically have no education. Results can be anywhere in-between.
Load More Replies...Social media and the ability for delusional people to congregate and get attention. People who believe one crazy thing tend to cling to all other conspiracy theories. Scientifically proven fact. Our education system is not healthy though.
That's not exclusive to the US though, plenty of European countries - including mine - have ecuation systems stuck in mid-20th century, when memorizing useless things was more important than critical thinking. University was like a breath of fresh air in that regard...

They are all over the world, even in countries with a functional educational system. It's because you can make lots of money selling nonsense to gullible fools.
Load More Replies...The antivax people are not about a lack of education, it is about a lack of trust towards the medical community. Minorities and women are some of the most predominate demographics in the antivax community and they are the ones who are often abused or belittled by the medical community. There has been a ton of research done on this and people look for alternatives because the medical community has failed them. Women die because they are misdiagnosed, especially when it comes to cardiac issues. Black sickle cell patients get labelled as drug seekers in their medical records because they go to the emergency room and they look "fine" but a sickle cell patient in crisis requires strong doses of opioids for pain management. Get mistreated enough and they end up on antivax websites and get even further ridiculed by the medical community which pushed them away to start with. Flat-Earth though...not sure what is going on with those guys.
No, our education system is not doing well and it is frightening. Politicians and their religious dogma drive much of what is and is not included in the curriculum. Texas, a large conservative state which buys a lot text books has a huge influence on what is in text books so the entire country is devoted to what the conservatives in TX are comfortable. We refuse to examine the flaws of our "forefathers" so they are depicted as heroes with no flaws. To point out a flaw is to be unpatriotic - it's messed up.
I've never met an earnest flat-earther. I have trouble believing that there are functional people who actually believe this.
Also the constant religious indoctrination kills critical thinking at a young age.
there isn't any religious indoctrination. (at least not where I grew up)

Date Order (MM/DD/YYYY)
Saying "May 6th" is quicker than saying "the 6th of May." Americans are all about saving time in meaningful ways. In the words of Kevin Malone, "When me President, they see...they see."
Load More Replies...I once saw this drawn out like a pyramid - the smallest unit of time (days) being the top, with the progressively larger units underneath. So you have ddmmyy as a standard pyramid, and yymmdd as an inverted pyramid. And then they drew the US version...
Load More Replies...They say it the way they write it, May 6th 2021, where as most countries say it as "the 6th of May 2021" but only write 6th May 2021, which becomes 06/05/2021. (Hop that makes sense!).
Considering the best way to date order things in naming computer files is 20210506 (today's date); this makes absolutely no sense
I also can't get over how often people don't say dates with the st, th or rd. So big movie releases will be said 'coming May twenty four'.
And then Canada has a holiday nicknamed May Two Four *facepalm
Load More Replies...It may be normal in the US, but it does even in the US make no sense. I see hardly any practical reason behind this, but for a focus on mothly periodization.
In my mind yyyy-mm-dd makes sense and I use it personally, though I revert to dd-mm-yyyy when giving dates for others to read because I know that that convention is expected.
Load More Replies...No, no, no. We've got this right! from most specific increment to most general increment - day, month, year. It's in logical order. Putting the month before the day is just putting it out of order. If you HAVE to have the month before the day, then start with the year - year, month, day - the reverse logical order.
Americans write it this way because they say it this way: "May 6th, 2021".
Load More Replies...I don't know if it's specifically an American thing, but how about starting the week with Sunday? Some calendars work this way and it makes things confusing (we always start with Monday).
I mean, look at it this way - September is not the seventh month and October is not the eighth but you still know to find them between August and November.
Load More Replies...Ahh yes. The 5th of July. National Bikini Day. Naturally, Americans change the order for that day.
Load More Replies...She also said that she experienced “major cultural shocks living in Italy, but I know that if I visit or live in any other European country, I'll experience different culture shocks there as well.” The biggest lifestyle and mindset difference Kacie sees is “the old saying, 'Americans live to work, while Europeans work to live.' It's so true.”
Being concerned when anyone speaks a language you can't understand.
I live in India and we have 22 language here, with multiple dialects of the each language.
There's no I guess it is true. Any middle eastern language especially. Really it's beautiful and fascinating listening to other languages, accents, and dialects.
Load More Replies...You make it sound like all Americans have a problem with hearing people speak other languages. In fact American has a hugely diverse population with people originating from all over the world speaking other languages all the time and so MOST of us have NO problem with it. I think the problem is the 25% of people who are xenophobic bigots, which I believe exist in every culture, are given far too much attention and credibility in America, making people think we are all idiots. Yes I used to think that if I looked hard enough I would find a country that was not like that -- but have found out over the decades that intolerant, reactionary morons are a problem in every single country.
Exactly. I can understand and read French and I'm learning Spanish. A lot of my friends are Indian and they are learning some Indian dialect or language. I know plenty of people who speak Chinese. All of these people, including me, were born in America.
Load More Replies...I'm not concerned when I hear a language I don't understand; I'm more likely to be upset that I never learned it.
In most of Europe it's normal to speak at least two languages
We have 11 official languages in South Africa. Most people here speak at least two langauges.
Actively avoiding healthcare visits/checkups because if there's something wrong and you don't have the money to pay for treatment, then you'd rather just not know
In Estonia - had migraines, went to a doctor, had MRT, CT, several blood tests, physiotherapy because of muscle tension. I paid 5 euros for all that.
Yep, completely normal. And if you're left in hospital twn all you pay is for bed spot and food. It's about 2.50€ a day
Load More Replies...And just like with cars, the longer you postpone those checkups the more expensive the repairs will be. In the end the medical business always wins, just like casinos.
In my country our insurance pays for literally everything our daily check up or anything is free unless it is not that important for health like laser hair removal stuff like that may cost u a bit and even u dont need to pay for medicine usually
In the usa my pay Co is 22 dollars. Covers most things. Unless something major. Even then.
I have have a similar co pay. Sadly that isn't true for a lot of Americans.

That women only get about 6 weeks off work after having a baby and it's most likely to be unpaid.
I had a friend back in 3rd grade and her step mom had just had a daughter and only got two days off and went back to work. She was a police officer and got shot 9 times in the neck and killed...she only got to see her baby for two days because she couldn't afford more days off.
In most European countries you have 6-12 months payed leave
She added that in general, “Americans are constantly on the go—constantly working, constantly moving, constantly striving for the next best thing, which is great for its own reasons, but I've also found that because of this, Americans are much more stressed, much more overworked, and much more burnt out compared to Europeans.”
Portion sizes.
I couldn’t get over the size of soft drinks (Soda). A large in Australia is about the size of a small cup in the US. No one needs to consume that much sugar in one sitting!
And its free refills, why even buy a larger bottle when you can just refill a smaller cheaper cup?
Load More Replies...The great thing about portion sizes here is for the price of lunch, I get dinner too.
Then again, you don't need to consume it all or could go for a childrens portion. But I do agree, it creates more waste & thrown away food than needed asides the obese virus that's going around.
Having police patrol the school
We love our guards. They're usually fun goofy guys who aren't there to intimidate just be there. No one's scared of them.
Where I live the police have a very positive presence. They hold jump ropes and play hopscotch, have a really cool kids program. All the kids know all of the police and everyone gets along great. It is a small town, but law enforcement is just like a friendly neighbor, and a nice part of society. Maybe some think it is patrolling the school. But it really is just hanging out with kids in a really positive way to helps build trust in the community between citizens and law enforcement.
Is this really a bad thing? I've met them and talked to them. They are incredibly good people. They patrol the school to protect us from outside threats. They are also there for us to refer to just in case we see drugs, guns, vapes, or anything else. I feel safe that they're there.
Seen them drag a six year old girl by the hair for being unruly. Horrendous.
Load More Replies...We have police patrolling our school, with some recent scares and lock downs, it's been a necessary oddity.
i wish i did . . . never saw one except on field days, or fire drills . . .
Nope. No active shooter drills either, no places with bag checks or X-rays, no closed/walled in schools. My school in Australia was open on all sides. Edit: actually some private schools are gated as are some city schools but most schools are not

Pledge to the flag in class
This I never understood. This was one of the reasons I was bullied in school because I refused to stand and pledge allegiance to the flag. To me, even at a young age, it seemed like brainwashing. My teacher was in a tizzy about it, the school principal wrote a letter to my mother about it. My mother said it is not a requirement to get an education (one of the few things she backed me up on.) So I was asked, instead, to just stand with the rest of the class. I wasn't required to recite it. I wasn't required to place my hand over my heart. Years later I saw German children during the Nazi occupation, standing in uniforms, arm outstretched, hands up, pledging allegiance to Hitler. How is that different from what I was being asked to do all those years ago? It's not us that should be pledging our loyalty to our government...it should be our politicians pledging their loyalty to the American people to do their best to listen to us, protect us and take care of our basic needs.
America is the FREE-est country ever!!! Now swear allegiance to the flag or else!
we do this in my country and I don't live in America. we also have to sing the national anthem along with the pledge
And we think communist counties "indoctrinate" their children. When I pointed this out to a person their response was "We're just trying to make them love the US and make them good citizens." My response as "And so are those other countries." Lack of critical thinking is a huge problem in the US and I'm a US citizen from birth.
It was actually invented for a worlds fair, so it's not like it even that important.
Legally, a public school cannot force you to pledge to the flag, because that would be a violation of your First Amendment rights by a government entity.
Kacie recounted that when she moved to Italy, one of the biggest culture shocks she experienced was “how Italians take time during their day to slow down and relax, whether it be closing the store for 3 hours in the afternoon to go home and spend time with family or having mandatory paid vacation weeks by law, no matter your job.”
Having said that, the actress and TikToker added that it also has its negative connotations “but in general I've found they make enjoying their life a priority. It's definitely something I've gathered is similar as a whole in Europe as well!”
American flags everywhere. I traveled throughout Europe and the Caribbean and I usually only saw their flag on government builds and here and there. Where as here in the USA the flag is like Franks Red Hot. We put them on everything. Magnets, churches, cars, condoms, every front porch, and street lamp. #murica
Nah...at this point when I see someone proud of the this country is and thinking it's already "great"...I know they've got a MAGA hat somewhere.
There are a lot of car dealers here who fly gigantic flags and it's just another form of crass commercial advertisement. This is restricted in most cities but they put their dealerships just outside the city limits so they can do what they want.
i like in minnesota and in my neighborhood we have like no american flags mostly just blm, all are welcome here, and pride flags and signs.
Glad you didn't see the other half that's flying the Confederate flag. Sigh
But don't forget it has nothing to do with racism or supremacy, it is just about heritage. BARF!

Putting a ton of sugar in products like bread.
Bread, by definition over here, ought not contain sugar at all. Otherwise it is a pastry.
It's normal to have maybe a teaspoon of sugar in bread. The sugar activates the yeast which it helps to make the bread rise.
Load More Replies...What US Americans call Bread, we call Toast. And it has a bad reputation.
In some countries Subway bread is not considered bread because it has too much sugar in it.
obv you havent been to Singapore/Malaysia....sugar literally in everything from mayonnaise to meat!
Same here in China. Like you mentioned, sugar is in everything, and a lot of it. My introduction to this culinary waterboarding came when I made a PB&J sandwich. The peanut butter was so sweet it turned your stomach, and ditto for the bread. Even restaurant dishes, both meat and vegetable, are spiked with large amounts of sugar.
Load More Replies...If you are from Germany like me, you wouldn't even call that "thing" bread. We have have bread in all kind of variations and it's not sweet.
Registering to vote. As a Canadian, you're automatically enrolled when you turn 18 and get a notice where your polling station will be for every election.
That sounds nice actually. We have to register to vote here in South Africa too and it's always a chaotic mess.
The Republicans are currently fighting like mad to unregister everyone possible and shut down polling stations, particularly in areas where voters tend to vote for the Democratic party. They are doing all they can to destroy democracy and form an authoritarian one-party system not unlike the old Soviet Union.
I actually looked into this and found that the majority of areas that get shut down are actually rural in nature, or a swing area that has a conservative lead. It happens a lot. It happens a lot on both sides it is quite alarming.
Load More Replies...In the Netherlands everyone from the age 18 and up automatically gets an invitation to vote when there's an election.
Not just a US thing either. You choose whether or not to register to vote in NZ. Then you choose whether or not you vote.
This isn't exactly accurate. You're automatically eligible to vote, but if you don't register it's considerably more complicated - you need to have 2 pieces of primary ID and/or proof of address, which can be a barrier to many.
Not true. You can get a family member to come with you to the polling station to vouch for you. It's right on the elections Canada website.
Load More Replies...And there are a lot of people that don't register to vote. Why? Because your voters registration also puts you in the pool for jury duty selection. Sever that tie and you will probably find more people willing to register.
Maybe if this was how the US rolled, we wouldn't have fake votes :/
Again, Republicans do their best to restrict voting rights. If they didn't, they'd never win.
How do they know where you live though? Surely there are people that don't live the same place at 18 where their parents lived when they were born.
Prescription drug ads encouraging people to ask their doctor about the drug being advertised.
The EU also has laws that you cannot advertise medication without a disclaimer to talk to a doctor or pharmacist first. The sizes of non-prescription medicine is rather what strikes me. Aspirin by the 100s...
In the Netherlands you can only advertise OTC medicines. But in these adverts you can not make claims that aren't true or aren't scientifically proven. Over here doctors decide what kind of medicine you are going to get. Not some pharmaceutical business pushing their drugs on TV.
Load More Replies...How else would someone with a flaccid penis know he has medical avenues to pursue? kidding, the whole concept is F****D.

We have that in NZ. Ads literally saying "ask you doctor about...". Usually for more common ailments like asthma and diabetes.
Not using the metric system. Counting in football fields/moon landings instead... I don't get it.
There's the rub. I've been brought up during the transition from imperial to metric in the UK. However, are speed signs being still in MPH (Miles per hour), but quantities of food are in metric. It's all a mish mash. Sometimes I measure thing in inches, sometimes in centimetres. Confusion!
The only place even worse than the US! I remember when I was young the UK was using pints, ounces, miles per hour but also kilos, litres etc - VERY confusing
Load More Replies...I hear people in the UK use not metric terms. You weigh how many stones?? What the hell kind of measurement is that? I often hear talk of miles and mph from some UK shows as well. I'm not against the metric system but we aren't the only country with a variety of measures that are commonly used.
This is true. Miles, stone, yards, feet and inches... I prefer metric but I do find that some areas we've not changed at all. Distance when driving, human weight and height. The rest seems to be metric on the whole though older people might be more likely to not be metric and vice versa.
Load More Replies...Eh we use the metric system for some stuff... I know both. But if I were to describe a distance, yea, it would be easier for me to think in terms of feet or yards.
Look at it this way, each system has advantages and disadvantages (from my perspective as an American). However, imagine how easy it would be to switch over to using the imperial system in your own country. Yeah, a disaster. It would be just as difficult for us to switch to exclusively use the metric system.
I don't see any disadvantages in the metric system, it works on a base of 10. 10mm equals 1cm, 100 cm equals 1 mt, and so on. It feels more logical to me.
Load More Replies...Canada’s a mish mash too. GF has “no idea” when I say it’s 74 out, but has the temp in the house set to…..74. The dog weighs 80#’s. Work is 50Km away, but that’s measured as a function of time, not distance. Funny stuff.
In the US, we have both imperial and metric virtually everywhere. Products labeled with a measurement usually have both. Measuring tools from tap measures, rulers, measuring cups and car odometers typically have both. For safety reasons, medicines are only in metric and speed limits are only in imperial. I use both systems all the time and suspect many others Americans do as well. Each system has its strengths.
We learn both. Customary is more common, but in school you do need to know about metric.
When I was there during the last election I was shocked at how phrases like ‘well they have the black vote’ or the ‘Latino vote’ came up all the time on the radio. Obviously it’s not racist but it’s just something that would never come up in my country. Like, why would latino people all vote for the same person?
Same thing happens in my country. The sad part is that here, 'right' and 'left' are the same shït. No difference at all. People are just stupid and fall for the speech each side sells, and politicians use that in their favor.
Load More Replies...US America also asks for your "race" in all sorts of forms. But they only give the options of white black and latino... not sure if anything else but definitely no bi racial apparently. Blew my mind that they even ask.
You dont have to answer thos questions like ever. They can ask but its illegal for them to require an answer.
Load More Replies...This bugs me so much! You always hear them segregating people this way. Woman, black woman, latina woman, gay men, black gay men, it is so bizarre. The way to stop having people segregate is stop doing it on a national scale. It would be a great glorious day to just hear people referred to as people.
Because America is about the divide between people instead of uniting. It sucks.
In the US, African Americans tend to vote for Democrats, while Latinos are more likely to vote for Republicans.
Having only two parties: Republicans and Democrats. I know there are some smaller parties, but the system is stacked against them.
I've noticed on social media the hoards of people that will slam a certain politician, but never suggest or support someone qualified (movie stars don't count)
Load More Replies...Essentially the same in England, it's always going to be Conservatives or Labour getting into power.
Well, we did have a coalition very recently that was with the lib dems. As we saw, it only takes one massive c**k-up for a party to fall completely out of favour (lib dems I mean). They may rise again though not in the near future I suspect.
Load More Replies...No different to Australia. The two major parties are Labor and Liberal. The rest are the smaller ones.
Well, technically the Liberal party consumed the Nationals like some sort of Kirby. And the crossbench does exist, if only to cause mischief at inopportune moments... Pretty close to the binary, though.
Load More Replies...It's called a two-party system and has historical, electoral and traditional reasons, (e.g. many Commonwealth countries have this system) as opposed to a multi-party system, as does most of Europe
Things CAN change. My country was represented by the same party for nearly 50 years but for the last decade they have been out of government. Unfortunately we are still controlled by another government and we have no say in the running of things. Still live in hope of independence though!
Ambulance rides costing money seems pretty absurd to people from other countries.
I just googled it and at least in Germany, the insurance pays the ride to the hospital. But there should be a medical reason for calling the ambulance (which is almost always the case), for a "fun" ride the cost is between 300 -500€
That makes sense...calling an ambulance without a medical crisis is like calling the police without there being a crime.
Load More Replies...I most of Europe ambulances are paid by the government as they're emergencies. If they had to be paid by insurance nobody would call them and we would have a lot more dead people.
Load More Replies...I am "lucky" enough to have a hospital one mile awat and unlucky enough to have had taken an ambulance there for an emergency, for which I was charged $2000.
Ambulance rides are paid for by taxation, as part of national health. A number of reasons for this, firstly, life-saving care starts sooner, treatment is streamlined, and patient outcomes are better. Second, it protects other road users from incapacitated or distracted drivers causing accidents.
Oh, not always. A girl walked right in front of my mam's car on a green light.. Mam had just finished a 12 hour nursing shift, but was still able to stop in time. The girl had not one injury, the car didn't touch her but she cried like a baby..Guess who got the bill for the ambulance? My mam is so nice that she was upset that she almost hurt someone. I felt differently.
Load More Replies...Even in NZ, where most healthcare is free/cheap, you pay for ambulance rides. Except in Wellington where we have Wellington Free Ambulance instead of St John Ambulance like the rest of the country. Google tells me much of Australia also charges for ambulance rides. So not unique to the US at all.
In my county you don't pay for the ambulance if you get hospitalized or if you get a referral to the emergency room from doctor. That is how they separate legit ambulance calls and those that are not.
Toilet cubicles, where people not only can peek, but an adult person could crawl into your cubicle, there is so much space under the "door".
It's meant to make you feel unnerved therefore making you do you business quicker so lines are shorter.
Also, the materials are cheaper and maximize the usage of the space so companies can pay less to meet the legal requirement to accommodate the need.
Load More Replies...I've had this happen to me. A mother was changing her two sons in a public restroom. She was trying to calm down her crying child as her other son peaked through the stall that I was in. He then continued to get on his hands and legs and and craw into the stall. I was freaking out. Of course he was young, so he didn't know any better but it was still quite embarrassing.
I've mentioned it before, I don't believe these were common in the U.S. until Ronald Reagan destroyed our mental healthcare system and so businesses adopted these in order to make it easier to find homeless people camping in their bathrooms and addicts shooting up in them as well. And also these businesses like the fact that it the rest of the customers less comfortable and spend less time in there as well, and seem to think the bathrooms don't get as dirty as a result, and as someone else pointed out, also makes them faster to mop.
I actually somehow find this useful (the space under), once my friend got stuck in a cubicle because some teenager messed the door, after making a fuss she just crawled under the door and told the staff of the place
Yeah, I've seen this. A little guy got stuck cause the lock wouldn't open and a worker (I think it was in a Domino's Pizza) crawl under the door to help him.
Load More Replies...It makes the restrooms easier to clean. The large gaps give plenty of room for a mop
And to crawl out if you are stuck. YEAH i did it, in France, on an highway service area, on a school trip. The teacher was mad at me because the door was shut from the inside but obviously staff have keys to open it and the bus could have leave without me. Thankfully the floor was clean.

Not putting the final price on the tag. I'm not sure whether it's still like this, but a few years ago one never knew whether the $1.00 item in McDonald's or Burger King is actually $1.00 or maybe $1.08.
And they'll defend this practice tooth and nail by stating all kinds of state specific tax laws. Mate if your register can calculate the tax when you're paying, then the store can calculate the tax when making the bloody price tags too. Each store prints their own price tags, so different tax laws aren't a problem.
It's easy enough for Shops to put prices on their own shelves that include the tax so the customer doesn't need to work out the tax rate and then do maths in the aisle.
Load More Replies...This would be so annoying , your states are massive just write the end price on it!
Europe has a sales tax too but we have this radical system of tax calculated into the given price

The enabling customer service culture. It’s created excessive portions in restaurants, created Karen, gives way to a disposable attitude towards products, and generally gives a sense of entitlement where most people start adding it to their list of rights.
True, but in some countries the Karens lose on every occasion because employees do not accept insults and psychopathic behavior from customers. Also shops don't accept returns from items that are bought from their competitor just "because the customer is king". In the Netherlands the saying is : Customer is king, but they person at the register is emperor.

My mother-in-law used to get cheap children's books from the Dollar store. My son, when he was 4, would merrily rip pages out of the books. I told him to stop. My MIL says "It's ok. It's only a dollar." I said "And at his age, he doesn't really know the difference between a book that costs $1 and a college textbook that costs $100." She saw my point.
Dunno I've worked retail in Australia and I lived in the US (my fiancee is American) and entitled people are everywhere and loud complainers often got their way as much as the US. Also Karen is just a bad term... The fact we can't even agree on the nake equivalent (Chad? Kevin? Richard? ) says a lot.
The minimal amount of paid days off you get from work. A friend of mine from Wisconsin was very proud he got 20 days off per year. If someone in Germany would offer me only 20 days, I would laugh at him and leave.
How many days off do you get? I am from Germany and the minimum amount per year are 20 days of holidays, it also individually depends on your type of contract and the company you are working for - but for 5 day work weeks we usually receive a maximum of approx. 24 days per year which is not much more than your friend from Wisconsin gets. Now I live in Spain and get 21-24 days per year off (plus plenty of public holidays). Germany is not that much better than other countries, when it comes to leisure time for employees.
But in the USA those 20 days have to cover all your sick days too, whereas in Europe sick leave is generally a completely separate thing.
Load More Replies...20 days is actually a lot in the US. I'd say most companies give you 10 days.
Last year I was set to get 5 weeks off. 5!! Then we got laid off cause of covid. Now I get zero days.

At that time it was at least 28 days plus another 6 days that they decided on. They offered flexi time, as many breaks as you wanted and had a subsidised (but amazing) staff restaurant. They only cared about getting the job done. Nowadays most companies here also offer these kind of conditions. I was surprised to learn of such poor American working conditions
In Australia the norm is four weeks holiday leave per year, that’s 20 working days.
Hi, what happens if you choose not to use your holyday leave? In Perú you can choose to acumulate them, and when u resign/get fired u get paid those unused days x 3.
Load More Replies...In my part of Canada most people start with 10 days a year and most of the time you can only take them when no one else in your department is on vacation. So you end up having to take them in the winter or odd times, not fun if you have kids and can't have time off with them in the summer.
Plus to get 20+ days of PTO (personal time off) you have to have worked at the business for a huge amount of years. I've been at the same place for 14 years and I get 200 hours a year for time off - sick or vacation it doesn't matter and legally they aren't supposed to ask but usually they do to "justify" approval of the time off. If I quit here and find another full-time job elsewhere, I would start off with 80 hours at best if anything, and usually, that's all they will negotiate and allow. Plus, I would have to work a probation period of 3-6 months to "earn' the right to go on paid PTO. This has held me back often when applying for other jobs because I'm a single mom and in the past, I've used that time off for school functions, child sick days, and other child-related things. I've only ever been on an actual vacation twice in 14 years.
Why tipping is considered part of someone's paycheck.
What's the rule in the US to give tips? Was it 20 or 15 % of the bill? Do I understand it right?
It's not a rule per say, but I think 15‰ is what you're "supposed" to do. I usually go towards 20% though. Some give more some give less.
Load More Replies...Tips should bw given if service is exceptionally good. Not like an entry fee that you HAVE TO pay
It wasn't like this to this degree when I was a kid. The waitstaff's standard pay in relation to tip income has been allowed to shrink for decades due to the corrupt politicians (most notably the Republicans) taking bribes and serving business first and having no regard for the welfare of the country's citizens. The business owners love this entirely dishonest system, again, because it allows their advertised price to be much lower and the customers paying the waitstaff's salary becomes another hidden fee.
And why this has been so for decades and why no one ever stood up and said that people shouldn't have to rely on charity to earn themselves a decent living working though jobs.
This is unfortunate. There are a few restaurants trying to eliminate tipping culture by paying their staff a living wage and not allowing customers to tip. But these are only in the big cities like NYC, it's still very uncommon. Most people get paid below the federal minimum wage and depend on tips as part of their salary. 20% of the bill is standard.
Attack ads against political opponents, ads for law firms or lawyers. These kinds of ads are illegal and considered unethical in our country. Also expecting a teenager to be out of the house by the time they're 18. I live in Southeast Asia. There's no stigma about living with one's parents. Most of the time, there will be three generations living in one house.
"Most of the time, there will be three generations living in one house": Don't confuse denial to leave parental house with lack of space or money. Sure, I would never ask my children to leave the house when they were 18 -they don't live with us since their mid 20s- but younger generations must not live with older ones. Granted that this is sometimes unavoidable, due to financial or health reasons.
But why must younger generations not live with older ones? What's the logic that makes that unacceptable? Why do we judge people's preferred way of living instead of just focusing on living our lives the way we want to (within our means of course)?

Not owning kettles and MICROWAVING their water for coffee/tea.
I use our Keurig as a kettle. It heats water to the proper temperature for black tea. Works great for a Cup of Noodles too. Edit: I should clarify. I don’t use a k-cup. I dispense the hot water into a mug and add a tea bag.
Load More Replies...Rather generalize this: 110V as the typical home voltage, whereas 230V is much more practical due to the lower currents and lower transmission losses.
110V is much safer for general household usage. Permanently installed appliances use 220V in the US, same as everywhere else. Our 110V is center-tapped off of the 220V transformer feed, so technically our 220V is only ever 110V from the neutral/ground.
Load More Replies...Why is this a problem? It heats the water, mission accomplished. I don't even own a mcirowave, use a stovetop kettle, but FFS, stop already, who cares how we heat our water!
I can answer why it is perceived as a problem by some but firstly I promise you I genuinely do not care or have an axe to grind over how people in the US heat their water for tea! Fact is the temperature of the water does make a difference to the flavour of the tea. It can be harder to be certain of water temperature in a microwave - knowing exactly what that temperature is and how much it can vary within the cup or container. Too hot and the tea can be bitter and so on. Ideal water temp varies for different teas as well. I do wish it stopped coming up though. It's not like it actually matters to anyone else if someone isn't making their own tea to the optimum flavour. It would be like everyone caring if you added sugar! Each to their own.

Why aren't the Brits being criticized for not as commonly having coffee makers in their kitchens as Americans do? What are they, animals? Why don't Icelandic people have Cezves in their kitchens to make their Turkish coffee with? Why aren't the French being criticized for not having 8300 NT$ rice cookers to cook and keep rice hot all day long like any normal Taiwanese person does?
No, what’s not normal is y’all losing your damn minds over heating water. W-A-T-E-R. Wah-tur. WATER!
That, my good sir or madam, is just inaccurate. We are not losing our minds over the act of heating water, we are losing our minds over the chosen method for doing so. Why would you want your coffee or tea to taste of microwave when there is an alternative?

In Denmark you'd be a "freak" if you did that.

This is true but not great as an introvert... I had more random convos in 1 year in the US than 10 in Australia... and people often eavesdrop in the US and comment on stuff you say. One time I was walking with my fiancee outside dollar tree and said to him 'I love spending time with you' and a lady 2 metres away yelled 'aww y'all are the cutest thing I've seen all day' to which other bystanders also got roped into agreeing. Another time we saw a bird eat a worm and commented to each other and this lady rushed over and inserts herself into our convo. Another time I'm by myself walking behind a lady with a dog slowly, she stops and proceeds to tell me aaalll about the dogs ailments... Another time in the supermarket in looking at frozen pizzas when a lady rolls by in a scooter with a massive outdoor plant in the front basket and proceeds to tell me how she was gifted it from the tavern next door... I can go on and on lol. I love America, don't get me wrong the encounters were nice, but I've never had so many random convos before the US. Italy is a bit like that but not the same and Australia obv it happens too but it's not the same. It is nice though as an omnivert though I wish it was a little more balanced between both countries
I grew up and live in Kentucky people are pretty friendly around here and you wave to people while driving down a backroad even if u don’t know them. My boyfriend and I went to Savannah’s Georgia and man is it friendly!! I think even more than where we live. I loved it there.

Joining the army for college money and free healthcare. Also how religious they are
University and healthcare are both free here. You would ONLY join the Army if you wanted an Army career. The idea of promising three (or is it four?) years of your life in the future for them paying for college now reminds me of indentured servitude, in fact I fail to see the difference..
The religious minority have very big voices and the secular majority just doesn't give a s**t. Squeaky wheel adage my friend. Plus if you want to join the military for an education, go Army, you will never see combat. If you have the sack to end someone's life, join the Marines.

The leading cause of homelessness for American children is medical bills.
While on my travels I've noticed that Americans have a totally different expectation on what service you get in restaurants and cafes and sh*t in Europe. Like the waiter arrives at their table seconds after they've sat down and takes their order and when he's out of ear shot they complain about the bad service. It's like if they don't get the OMG HOW ARE YOU GUYS MY NAME IS MIGUEL AND I'LL BE YOUR WAITER THIS EVENING and then have their water topped up every 20 seconds then it's bad service
All that over-friendliness from wait staff might be because they really need the tips in order to make a living... In most countries, tips are extra money servers get.
I loathe the service in US restaurants because it feels the whole time like the server is literally begging for their tip. It's like being in a Dickens novel "Please Sir, if I suck up to you hard enough, may I have enough money to live on". It's dehumanising and degrading, and it doesn't even lead to a better dining experience. European restaurants are so much more relaxing because you can actually eat and make conversation without constantly having someone fussing around you.
Load More Replies...But there are a lot of reasons for this. 1. In Europe people go to restaurants and cafes to relax, so there's no need for the server to hurry. 2. We like to take our time when eating so we'd be pretty annoyed if the server was hanging around to clear our table as soon as we've finished. 3. We don't like it when we get interrupted every 5 minutes because the waiter brings fresh water. 4. Servers don't have to act like a submissive slave in order to make a decent living.
Granted you're probably talking about entitled, spoiled rich people who travel a lot -- even within the U.S. people do, rarely, encounter these type of disgusting asshats -- but even though I have my own share of self-loathing of Americans, your level of exaggeration is just too much and crosses over into bigotry.

Home owners associations.
I've been meaning to ask this for a while, but what is this exactly and why does it feel super restrictive and patronizing?
HOAs are designed to help maintain a lifestyle in a neighborhood. Some are good, some are bad. HOA's are not everywhere so if you don't want to live with one, you don't have to. I live where there is one because the HOA maintains our pool, gym, landscaping in common areas, dog park, and private security. They also have covenants that make it difficult for children to live in this neighborhood, which I adore. I gladly pay them my monthly to fee to have all of these things. Other people don't like to have the restrictions of an HOA so they can purchase a home in a neighborhood without one.
Load More Replies...My boyfriend owns a home that he used as a rental we never planned on living in it but ended up there. It has an HOA like I mentioned in a comment they’re not all sunshine and rainbows. We had packages frequently stolen from our porch and had to put cameras up, one pointed towards our front door the other in front of our garage. We live on the corner of a somewhat busy street close to a college campus. The HOA bitched about it at first but eventually let it go. Only other things they bitch about is if the grass gets too tall and when the paint was peeling from the columns on our front porch we had to touch up the paint. I think there’s also a neighbor block party over the summer which is cool and I’m excited about that. Overall our HOA isn’t that bad but I still don’t like anyone telling me what I can and can’t do with my own yard or home. We aren’t planning on living in this home for every long just until we are in a better pace financially.
Your local VvE in the Netherlands has *nothing* like the powers of an American HOA. I have never (for example) heard of a Dutch VvE ban hanging laundry from balconies and gardens, kids and dogs from playing in their own yards, or owners can only park their cars in front of their own houses at certain times or having to apply to the VvE to put up a shed in your own garden... all that is pretty common with US HOAs...
Load More Replies...HOAs maintain property values and lifestyle. They often use funds collected to maintain the property, hire private security, provide amenities. It varies from HOA to HOA. Some, like the one I live in, are super restrictive, but I like that they keep children away from the pool and gym, and keep the neighborhood safe and well-maintained. Others keep their areas maintained or provide security, but don't do much about individual property up keep. It depends.

It's hotter here than most countries. My husband is ½ British and will drink things at room temperature or hotter. Most American citizens prefer our beverages on ice to keep us cool. The past few times We've visited Great Britain, the temperatures have been in the high 90's. We had the option of hot tea or room temp lager to help cool down. There was no ice. It's hot in America and those ice cold beverages are important to help us cope. I take ice molds to GB on every visit so I can cool off from those high temperatures that can't be dealt with in a 400 year old stone home.
thats not true. It has been proven time and again that in the heat a cup of tea will better cool you down then a drink with ice in it. The human body produces energy to cope with the ice in your system hence heating you further up.

Because no one wants to go to a trade school. Who wouldn't want to earn 70,000 as a unionized welder? you become a tradesman with universal qualifications and you have ZERO debt. it is just not sexy and that turns people off unfortunately.
Asking everyone “what do you do?” when you first meet them. I live outside the US and realized there are some people I’ve known for years and I still don’t know their job. I think in the US jobs are a bigger part of a person’s identity than in some other places.
I guess given their crappy leave entitlement, and ridiculous expectations about always being available, that might well mean it's occupying a larger part of their life and identity than it does in other countries
The worst part is its so ingrained it's scary....like it's documented that holidays make happier workers which means more productivity which results in more profit etc, but some Americans will insist 50+ hours should be the norm and no holidays and union is a dirty word. In Australia only people like Murdoch think that, not the average person. It's like Americans have drunk the corporate kool aid
Load More Replies...A person is so much more than their job(s). I admit to also be curious about people's jobs, but I try to first get to know a bit Who they are as a person, personality wise, values and behaviours etc, before asking invasive questions that might get them to feel unnecessarily exposed, and add an unnecessary societal superficial hierarchical layer ("What do you do to contribute to society and put food on your table?" "Oh, atm, a housewife..." "A doctor/lawer/etc!" "I left the high job position that I had for personal reasons, and atm I'm a barista but I hope to find something that fulfills me more, and is more in my area of expertise, soon...")
It's just a way to find something though which to connect with the other person. Curious, when meeting a new person in Europe, what is the way one connects? What is said? How do you get to know that person better? If I immediately asked someone what author was their favorite, they'd think I was a nut.
It is because we are stuck here for 40 hours a week with little paid leave so it takes up most of our time.
It's also "Where do you live?", "Where did you go to school?", "Are you married?", and "How many kids (and pets) do you have?" "What do you do for fun?" Because, apparently, you are only considered a "wholesome American" if you have a "decent" job, live in a "decent" neighborhood, went to a "decent" school, are "decently" married, have fulfilled your job of having exactly 2.5 kids, and enjoy reading a book per month. I fulfill like 1.5 of those expectations (I have a "decent" job but didn't finish school, live in a "suspect" town, not married, have no kids but two pets, don't like reading books). I always feel so uncomfortable socializing with the rest of the people in my office because I can't relate to them, and find myself compensating by taking on extra work projects to prove I don't need the degree, and showing off my "other" hobbies (photography, traveling) to compensate for not having a family or reading. Can't really explain the not being married though! It's exhausting!
American here. That's just a conversation starter. I've visited many foreign countries. No matter the policy of maternity leave or health care benefits, Americans are just trying to relate to others (please remember that very few of us have bothered to learn a second language) with this question. What do you do? Is what they mean. Stay-at-home Mom or corporate president makes no difference we just don't know how to start a conversation.
Circumcision and medical debt
Jep, it's pretty normal in the US. Where I live (the Netherlands) it's only done when medically necessary or because of religious motive.
Load More Replies...This is SUPER weird. For some REALLY odd reason most American boys are circumcised at birth? You can't get it done here unless it's for a medical reason, no religious exemptions. Why would you mutilate your boys like this? It literally does nothing except risk infection. Keep them intact..
Wait, what? I'm American, I never knew circumcision was common like that @-@

Yeah, right, you slept with a plethora of women in every corner of the world. Not at all unrealistic.

My maternity leave was an unpaid 6 weeks, and I had to fight them on not shorting me because I went past my due date and didn’t keep working until the day I went into labor.
In Germany, it is illegal to make a woman work 6 weeks prior and 8 weeks past her due date. (You get paid normally in that time.) After that, you can have up to 3 years of maternity leave. In the first year, you get 65% of your former income, the rest of the time is unpaid. Also you cannot be fired from the beginning of your pregnancy until you come back after maternity leave.
Hearing this literally made me want to cry because of how badly we are treated here in America. I am already planning on either a) taking 2 weeks after I give birth and praying I can work from home after or b) asking for them to fire me because I can't afford child care after and can't afford not to get paid and will apply for welfare.
Load More Replies...I worked until my water broke in the office. Then I waited until the end of the workday anyhow, because I knew the temp office assistant they hired about 3 days earlier to replace me wasn't getting it. Sure enough, during my labor at the hospital, she called me in tears because she didn't understand what to do. Then I went back to work 7 weeks later, having stayed out one week longer without pay because the short amount of time just wasn't enough for either me or the baby. I hated leaving my baby at daycare with strangers and I hated having to deal with baby body issues at the office. It was a horrible experience but I love my kid. Wish I could have had a dozen more.
People forget about Family Medical Leave Act. It is unpaid and that sucks but it is 12 weeks of "protection". Plus if you apply for temporary disability for a small price, you get 66% of your salary for the duration. The fact we need protection is scary but it is an option. We can apply for it for a range of medical reasons and it allows us to leave work and our employer can't say a thing unless they want a shitstorm from legal.
Side effects on medication adverts. With James' Hayfever meds, I can get through the day with ease! Side effects may include: Loss of sight Loss of hearing Loss of sense of smell Coma Headaches Fever Vomiting Diarrhoea Loss of consciousness and death.
Its best that they do tell you of the potential side effects. I suspect it will cover them legally if someone tries to sue.
You're not even considering that it's quite absurd that adverts making ridiculous claims are allowed.
Load More Replies...I like to listen to medicine commercials and guess what the side effects will be. It's a game me and my cousin play. It's crazy how often death is one of them
This practice is somewhat disingenuous. Legally, they must tell you every single side effect that every single person involved in the studies experienced, even if it had nothing to do with the medication.
Limited sick days.
Seriously that's a thing? How does one plan how maby days it takes to get well after kidney surgery?
Limited PAID sick days. You can be off without pay as much as you need. Thank God for the Family Medical Leave laws, they can not fire you if you are sick for a long time. Oh wait, they actually can...your employer can eliminate your job position in your absence.
Load More Replies...I lived in Germany and the employees there abuse the system so badly. some employees have literally worked maybe a month in the past two years because they are constantly out "sick" with something or other. And they keep getting paid. So yeah, that's why their tax rate is through the roof, someone is paying for it.
I get 3 paid sick days a year. I mean 3 a year is pretty ridiculous. And they act like they are generous because you're "allowed" to use them for medical appointments too. Where is that eye roll emoji?
So you think that people who are fighting cancer should be sat at their desk throughout the chemo? Or if it's infectious and they run out of sick days mid-illness, they should just pop back to work and infect the entire workforce? I don't think that's entitlement, I think it's common sense.

Why people censor swears that are totally obvious
In the US it's not the media, it's the government. The puritanical politicians passed laws and the media have to comply or they will be fined. Google "George Carlin 7 words"
Load More Replies...My bet is on the rating system. If you censor the swear you can market it as a family show and not PG13 or whatever else it would be.
In France we have the right to swear on TV at any times, i remember Pink was on a TV show at 20h 8pm and she was like "it is not censored?" "no, we are allowed to swear on french TV" and she was afraid to say F*** but she finally went with "f**k, f**k, that's my favorite word!" and she looked so relieved. In France Top Chef is a must and the french Kitchen Nighmares of course, swearing and kitchen are part of our culture so this shows are basically "learn to cook and how to swear". Top Chef: Shït, Fûck, pull your fingers out of your ässes, pîssing blood, i've been fücked... If it was censored it will be a silent show.

American here: When I was studying in the UK I had to send some financial documents back to the US. The only way these documents were considered valid was if the original was mailed in, or if I faxed a copy. When I asked the printing office if they could fax it for me they looked at me like I was an alien and said the school hadn't owned a fax machines for like a decade. Then they asked me if I still use a VCR.
My country just finished the very final phase out of cheques, banks haven't accepted them for a while Now, and now nowhere will. The catch is there are rural areas where internet access is limited or unavailable, and town is a far off drive, so people used cheques to pay bills etc, which they cant now. They just need to make the internet better country-wide
Load More Replies...This is starting to go away for the most part in favor of digital signatures. Faxes were the preferred method for a long time because the transmission method also permanently marks the document with the date, time, and place of transmission in the header. It's an image of a real 'wet' signature instead of a 'click to agree' button. Thankfully I haven't had to fax anything in a long time.
I actually found the US behind in tech... Most of them didn't have nfc or tap their credit cards.... where it's ubiquitous here in Aus now. Not only that they still sign in places, I haven't signed for my card in Australia in like 10 years. They say they don't tap because of fraud concerns, but they didn't use pins either sometimes
When my husband's father passed away, we had to send away for his birth certificate and when the state had digitized them, they spelled his name wrong... it took A LOT of back and forth for them to locate the original paper document, make the correction and get us the birth certificate we needed for whatever paperwork we had to do. (I can't even remember what we needed it for, I just remember how hard it was to get it.)

Because blind patriotism leads to entitlement and a sense of superiority over other nations. It's fine to be proud of your culture but you should never be blinded by it. There is good and bad everywhere and people should embrace that. People worshipping a flag of thinking where they are is the 'best' is a, slippery slope for a myriad of reasons. For one thing it can keep the masses happy with the status so even when the status quo is exploitative and more extreme is that it can lead to things ike Nazism

Entree means opening act. (Literally - it's originally an operatic term). French meals would consist of many courses, the entree would be the first one - this is the case in most of the world, apart from the US and, bizarrely, parts of Canada. It... evolved its meaning with the middling class growth - up until the mid-20thC, only the rich could afford multi-course meals.

Driving everywhere.
Our country is big. BIG. you want to walk 25 miles to work? Public transit systems don't often run to a town of 5,000. It would be great if we had small self contained towns but that is not how our country was formed. We have no history of self sustaining walled towns or feudalism. Americans like to stretch out and we have land in spades.
When people say this, I think it is because they don't realize how large the US is. We can't all live within walking distance of our jobs.
I thinks it’s more the „Oh, that’s two miles away? Let’s drive.“ Nobody would walk a distance of 10 miles regularly in Europe except if they chose to spend their leisure time that way.
Load More Replies...I live within walking distance of a grocery store. If I walked to the store and bought a gallon of milk and walked back, it would be sour before I get it in the fridge because the average temperature right now is 85 degrees and it's not even Summer yet. That's why I drive two blocks to the grocery store. Plus, there are no sidewalks. I have to cut through parking lots and manicured lawns to get to the store. You do not walk through American lawns. They will hurt you for walking on their stupid grass.

And everything is far from your home and centralized to shopping "centers"
Load More Replies...Guys, it's obvious that you must drive (of use a train) if you work far from home, it's common even in Europe. I think that the author meant "they drive even to the shop 2 streets away" and that's not normal for average European.
Yeah, I should totally walk for 5 hours to work instead of driving there in 30 min. *rolls eyes*
That's awful! Especially for poor people who have to pay car bills on top of everything if they have to work far from home. I'm 34 yo and i don't have a license or a car. Never needed it, i have lived in several cities and town in France and never felt the need of it. Public transportations are important. My rabbit specialized vet is 12km far and town buses don't go there so i just call a shuttle bus to make an appointment and pay 1,30euros for basically a personal driving service. That's my rabbit waiting at the bus stop "Where is my personal driver? i have an important meeting today!". I always wait early at the bus stop but they are always on time or early too. 20201016_1...a20277.jpg
Why downvote a fact? Public transportations are really important, even when i travel. I took train and/or buses in Sicily, Turkey, Palestine and Israel, Morocco, Germany, England, Greece, Australia. I like to take public transportations abroad, you meet people and you can enjoy more than people taking cars and having to drive in an unknown country with other rules and drivers who can go crazy depending on the country (I think Morocco, Turkey and Greece were the top 3, followed by Palermo driving). Also i took a train between Palermo and Capo d'Orlando in Sicily and the line was mostly following the coast line the views were stunning.

if people didn't drink out of buckets, then there'd be no diabetes. And then doctors would go out of business for lack of patients. If we prevented preventable diseases, our economy would go bust.

But then I went to Japan and after a couple of minutes, I realized that people were staring at us for having a conversation in a train and I felt so rude and loud suddenly! So when abroad, it is a good idea to look around you and check if your behavior is fitting in the surroundings.

Living "paycheck to paycheck" despite making like 4 grands a month
This COMPLETELY depends on the area. You living in an apartment in Jackson, Mississippi? You are NOT living "paycheck to paycheck" making $4k a month. Living in a 3 bedroom home in San Francisco, CA? Yup, you are certainly living paycheck to paycheck. Our cost of living varies wildly depending on both region and state.
It's why I lvoe remote work (which I can't, alas). Live where your salary goes a lot further!
Load More Replies...That depends on where you live. Where I currently am $4,000 a month would be a lot. In New York or San Francisco you'd probably be homeless
People do live on that, but it definitely means living in shared housing. $1K per month rent is about what you can afford on that. A studio apartment is going to be at least twice that much. So you'd definitely need to share.
Load More Replies...you can save money making $4k a month. Time to take a look in the mirror and evaluate your poor money management skills.

Personally hate shopping carts with four moveable wheels. I guess all the driving we do helps us manage a trolley.
Doesn't matter. Each and every shopping cart has at least one wobbly wheel that will send the cart into the groin of a person coming towards you.

The practice is illegal when done to modern vehicles. Load More Replies...I'm an American (born and raised), but I've heard that in other countries, strangers don't say hi or strike up conversations with each other. I know non-Americans are confused but let me explain: Sometimes if you are say at an amusement park for example and you're waiting in line for a ride, strangers would strike conversations with you and such and this is actually pretty normal. Or say you are walking around in a park and you walk past by someone, you usually smile and say a quick "hi" as you are walking past that person. I've had countless times where I've had people strike conversations with me that I didn't know. White people do this, but especially Black people do this a lot as well. Like you would see an old Black lady at a store and she'll just start talking to you. I've had Europeans tell me that people would think you are mentally ill if you were to strike up conversations with strangers in Europe for example. Especially in Asian countries no one does this (I've heard). Strangers absolutely do not say a word to each other in Japan or China for example. Side note: This may also be a regional thing in the US. I've lived in southern states mostly (like Texas) and people are really damn friendly down there. Now I live in Connecticut and people are way less friendly over here (no offense).
This one is one that I think other countries should think about adopting. I was recently hospitalised, and the most reassuring conversation I had was with a stranger who nattered about her husband's bedding plants for 20 minutes - completely taking my mind off the pain I was in. (I'm in the UK). There's plenty on lists such as these that I think the US has just gotten wrong compared to the rest of the world (healthcare, work ethic, the republican party), but this aspect I'd like to import.
This used to be a thing in the UK but then everybody got into their phones and people were frightened of strangers and so it died off. Also, everybody used to be on chatting terms with their entire street and beyond. It's a shame and I agree, we should reintroduce it.
Load More Replies...I like talking to strangers. Why the hell wouldn't I want to hear what someone has to say? You might learn something.
I grew up in Connecticut, and while I haven't been back there in almost 10 years, the area I grew up in (New London - southeast) was pretty friendly. Western CT is mostly inhabited by rich people who work in NY. A lot more snobbish, IMHO. Ironically, I do live in Texas now, and yeah, people are friendly, but no more so than in CT from what I can see. It's nice, tho.
Chatting with strangers is alive and well in the UK - certainly in NI where I’m from and definitely in the North of England where I’ve lived for decades. Had a chat with a complete stranger in the queue for the supermarket till first thing this morning. Only time someone reacted strangely was in London - but they have a bit of a reputation for this (not entirely justified I might add)
I'm torn. I honestly think it's so nice to talk to someone and I would love too do our more often but as an introvert I sometimes am very awkward or day dumb things and then it haunts me for the rest of the week so... Maybe strangers should stay strangers :D
You could let the stranger do most of the talking. I don't think I said more than 4 words to the lady chatting about her husband's bedding plants. Here's the thing, people love to talk about themselves and shy people (introverts) play a vital role in social interactions by letting people do just that.
Load More Replies...I'm really shy around people I don't know, so I know I wouldn't be likely to strike up a conversation with others so easily (though when I know people, I'm talkative so... o.O ) but anyhow, for many other more extroverted people, this could be great if the UK (more talkative than some European nations, but still not overly talkative to strangers) and other nations adopted this habit - especially considering so many people are starved of real social interaction due to the pandemic.
I love this one, and I'm an introvert! Having lived in a culture which does that, I now sometimes strike conversations in my country with random people, and most of them seem very happy to participate. It's making the first step that's tough because you might indeed be considered weird.
Grew up in the middle of the US. I was coming out of anesthesia and an old lady across from me apparently started talking to me about how scared she was since her husband died and apparently I gave her a pep talk. Complete with a 'you can do it!' The talking to strangers thing runs deep. And I'm an introvert who doesn't generally like to people. Talking to strangers can be a good thing.
If you go for a walk in a village or forrest in Germany or hiking in the Alps, for example, it is absolutely common to greet strangers you meet. If you are waiting somewhere, it would not be unusual to start some insignificant small talk with the people around such as "Wow, busy here today, thank God it is not raining!", however, telling a perfect stranger "Honey, I love your shirt, it is absolutely beautiful!" would cause people to think that maybe you lost one or more of your seven dwarfs, as we say around here...
...and just for clarification: I, personally, do not mind talking to strangers at all, as I am a very chatty person (just not on the phone) but Bored Panda just featured an article about oversharing and such... yeah, well, whatever, I'll see myself out...

in the UK it depends, some taxi's run on a meter so your price depends on the time it takes, others go at a fixed rate based on distance etc. London ones tend to be on a meter iirc, which sucks because it can take literally forever to get anywhere in London traffic. xD
There was a 24-hour pharmacy across the street from our apartment. Nothing shocking there, except it also sold booze and cigarettes.
In Poland it's pretty common to buy alcohol at the gas station, which indeed is weird, but I remember a gas station in Italy, where you could literally buy a glass of wine O.O
Load More Replies...It’s called one stop shopping. When you need medication because of alcohol and/or tobacco addiction, you’re right there!
Pharmacy selling booze and cigarettes for theraputical purposes, I am sure...
It's relatively rare to find an actual stand-alone pharmacy in the US. They are usually coupled to another establishment, or are also their own convenience store.
One positive thing I've noticed, foreigners love how big Halloween is here.
So true! People have tried to make Halloween a thing in Germany, but most people didn't jump on the train. I would love to have decent Halloween parties here!
I really love Halloween! I'm so sad that most people in Ireland don't go all out!
Load More Replies...Australian here, I think the only benefit to celebrating Halloween here is that it keeps Christmas out of... everything for one whole months. Hot cross buns are usually on supermarket shelves by 29 December.
More into Easter and Christmas, but man, Halloween? I got you.

No, it's an old tradition brought to America by an exodus of Irish ppl moving there. All Hallows eve

I think this is going to change over time. I remember a time (in Germany) when you were at the cash register in a supermarket and you and the cashier wouldn't greet each other. Then suddenly, maybe about 30 years ago, that changed. Now we say "hello" and "have s nice day" and sometimes talk a little, but I remember it being so, so weird, to have to talk to the cashier! It was really awkward du first. Now of course, I cannot imagine to not day hello to the cashier, it just seems so rude. But I think at the time, it wasn't meant in a rude way, it was just normal for everyone.
There's nothing wrong with a little courtesy. But I noticed that in the Netherlands in some shops they are adapting the crazy American thing where you enter the store and all of the staff yell "Hello and welcome!!!" accompanied with a fake smile. Gives me the creeps.

As an American I was shocked to learn that not every school internationally has a building cop
Another shocker: There is literally no school in Europe that has metal detectors or school shooter drills.
In France all the schools I have known in the recent years regularly do several kinds of emergency drills (for fire or other types of events). In one of them the kids are asked to hide under or behind the furniture, I think it is in case there is a shooter or an armed intruder.
Load More Replies...Not every school in the US has a cop. In fact, most don't. A lot do though.
In Maine the cops in schools are called "resource officers". I have no idea what that meant.
Once again, I live in Oklahoma and can’t relate to this. We never had a cop at our school. We had an ex cop. But he was the school nurse. My daughter is in 2nd she’s never been to a school with a cop.
Injured people try to avoid getting ambulances called for them.
Well, if you know that a 4 minute ride will cost you enough to feed a family of six for 4 years, you'd be reluctant too.
I think that's kind of the point that's being made. Insane, isn't it? No free healthcare must be terrible. My grandad died of Parkinson's last year, and with all the meds he had to take, my nan would be drowning in debt if not for free healthcare.

They have garbage disposals in their kitchens. That's just so wild to me.
In the UK garbage disposal units aren't common. Now that we are able to recycle food waste, there's no reason to have one at all.
Translated: They pollute the water even more and making it much more difficult to clean the water. Also the enormous amounts of fat that end up in the sewers cause a lot of problems making the maintenance of sewers much more expensive and hazardous.
Ha! The murder sink. That is what my Irish relatives call our garbage disposals. They often ask how you bathe a baby if your sink can kill it.
Yeah, we're not even allowed to use those here (NL), because we're not allowed to dispose waste into the water system. It clogs up filtering, adds pollution, makes it harder and more expensive to clean the water, etc.
Same in Sweden. And I don't get the benefits; isn't it easier to throw it in the trash can (since you still have to take out the rest of the trash)?
Load More Replies...This seems like it would be a great idea, if you could toss the lot into your compost
Much like the built-in trash compactor, they were billed as a luxury item but are absolutely unnecessary. They encourage putting things down the drain which do not belong there.
I read once that the busiest days for plumbers that service clogged drains are the days after Thanksgiving and Christmas. People make huge feasts then treat their garbage disposal like a wood chipper. Personally, I like having one to take care of the little bits that I miss when scraping plates, but I still scrape plates into the trash before washing.
Load More Replies...Almost every house I've lived in has had one. Very few of the apartments have. My understanding is that they can be problematic in multi-tenant buildings and lead to clogs.

Lemonade. I'm America, but there was a post going around a while back about an American who ordered a lemonade at a restaurant in Australia and was confused to receive a Sprite. The op of the post was the server, and thought it was just the American being snooty for being confused. Then commenters from other nonUS countries chimed in on what a lemonade is to them. It blew my mind, because in the US lemonade is so iconic as a summer drink, and is often homemade.
Eta: lemonade is not water with lemon in it. It requires sugar and preparation.
Second edit: to all the people commenting "hello America, I'm dad" pay your child support. You can't just walk out on an entire country like that and show up suddenly now that I've got karma
Lemonade in Greece is lemon juice, sugar, water or lemon syrup and water. It can be either homemade or store bought, but it definitely is not sprite. Sprite is sprite.
In Australia lemonade is pretty much the same as sprite. A clear, flavoured fizzy drink. We don't have lemonade like in the US or Greece.
Load More Replies...Sprite is a type of lemonade. It is store bought. You can also buy 'cloudy' lemonade and the more 'bitter lemon' type. I wonder what they think the stuff in the Sprite can is, if it's not lemonade..
That last paragraph though haha xD But yea, Lemonade in the UK is a lemon carbonated drink, very different from American lemonade, both are refreshing to me in the summer, though.
If you ask for lemonade in the Netherlands, they'll ask you if you want Cola, Sprite, 7up or any other soft drink.
Real lemonade is lemon water and sugar in every country, but purchasable bottled or canned will be scweppes, sprite or 7up.
Not in every country. Very very rarely (if at all) will you find lemonade made that way in Australia. You go to a restaurant and ask for a lemonade, you will get a carbonated, clear sweet drink.
Load More Replies...When I went to New York I was flabbergasted by the amount of people just loitering on the streets or having phone conversations that everyone can hear on the train like npcs from GTA. People outside of the USA don't hang out in public or let other people into their business on public transport. I managed to hear a woman talk about how her baby daddy wasn't going to her daughters birthday party and I started to pick side's in her personal life, while walking through Central Park I heard two friends with a substantial age gap talk about everyone in their friend group having mistresses and they were trading information on the mistress facts each of them knew for their respective friends, I got invested in that one so I folliwed them for a while (pretending I wasn't) because I wanted the tea.
I'm assuming this person is from northern Europe. Because there are loud talkers in Greece too. Oh and also people who listen to music on speakers in public places :(
"People outside of the USA don't hang out in public"....I have been to four different countries in my lifetime...and ALL of them had people "hanging out in public".... I was actually catcalled in Toronto by a group of males just hanging out. This poster is just WRONG if they think this is an exclusively American thing...very WRONG.
people outside the USA don't hang out in public?? this is the dumbest thing I've heard. apparently you don't travel much.

Because Americans don't give a flying f**k what anyone else thinks. Generally.
Biscuits and gravy is a legit thing. Also you can ride motorcycles without helmets in some states??? And your iced tea isn't sweetened unless you ask for sweet.
Biscuits and gravy still gets to me. I know US biscuits are savoury but almost every time I picture our biscuits (cookies) with gravy and cringe.
Your iced tea isn't sweet unless you ask for it in the north of the USA. In the south..if you say iced tea, they automatically bring you sweet tea.
I'd rather have unsweetened, and add sugar to my taste, then getting tea so sweet you get cavities just by looking at it.
Load More Replies...This person must not have been in the Southern US. It is almost sacrilege here to not put sugar in your tea. You will only really find unsweetened tea in the Northern and Western parts of the country. Again, we are large country with over 300 million people...there are regional differences.
Driving without helmets is a natural selection thing. It provides the hospitals with enough donor material to save sensible people.
Our biscuits are savory and leavened with baking powder. The gravy is a cream sauce with sausage mince. Biscuits and gravy is a heavenly dish.
Oh, iced tea is DEFINITELY sweet by default in the south (southern United States.) In the deep south, unsweet may not even be an option.

That higher education can cost upwards of $50,000 per year.
Not at most states schools, it does not. My tuition at my State U was $6800 per year, $3400 per semester. It is the private colleges, Ivy Leagues, and exclusive, upper tier state schools that are that expensive. You can get a fine education for less than $10k yr, easily.
Say "I'll just have water" at a restaurant and not be charged for it or be asked "What kind?"
Tap water is free in Australia from restaurants, pubs, cafes etc but bottled water you have to pay for. And quite often they will have jugs of cold tap water for you to take to your table, for free.
It’s the law where I live, if someone asks you (a business owner, etc) to fill up their water bottle, you have to. Bottled water does cost money though, but that’s really because of the bottle... I’m terrible at explaining things lol
Most of the cost involved in a purchased bottle of water is the bottle itself, and transportation for the product. I live not far from a Niagara bottling facility, and it's just our local tap water, but sold in plastic bottles.
Load More Replies...Not really crazy, but I just learned you guys have like outdoor sirens that get tested somewhat frequently. I’ve only heard those noises in video games and movies until my friend sent me a clip, because I had no idea it actually happened.
Not only in the USA - in Czech republic we have them too, test is every first wednesday of the month at noon, for a few minutes. They can also "speak", so you hear "Zkouška sirén" - Test of the sirens a few times beforehand.
We(atleast in my city) also have our sirens tested the first wednesday at noon, but ours don't speak.
Load More Replies...Because we have tornados. You would want an alert system if you had tornados.
Yep. We don't have them where I live on the West Coast, because tornados aren't really a thing here and earthquakes don't really come with much warning. We're experimenting with warning systems for earthquakes, but it really only gets you a few seconds.
Load More Replies...The sirens are, in rural areas, a reliable way of letting everyone hear that a problem is occurring (tornado, for example). Also used for floods and other emergencies, but mostly I've heard it for tornadoes.
Yes. If you live in a tornado-prone area, you get used to the tests (for me, it's 11AM on Fridays). It's nice to know when an actual tornado is coming, the sirent will work. There's so little time to get to a protected area, the sirens are essential.
Netherlands: Every first Monday of the month the air raid alarms are sounded. Unless a stork has build a nest on such a siren. Than that siren won't be tested.
If you live in the Central Plains area, that's called a tornado siren. Helps us know when to take shelter.
So how do you know if there's a fire? Word of mouth? Outdoor sirens? The smell of smoke?
Text messages, the grapevine, UHF radio, news, radio etc. We don't have sirens.

That the entire traffic has to stop when a school bus stops.
Having had a classmate get hit by a car after getting of the bus and died, I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing. I wouldn’t put my daughter on the bus otherwise.
Why is this bizarre? Shouldn't traffic stop to avoid running over children?
A couple of years ago, a woman didn't stop for a bus in the morning (it was still dark out - winter). She hit and killed all three kids from one family. Yeah. Stop. You may have to wait two whole minutes.
That's similar to the law in European countries where people on bicycles are always right when they get involved in a traffic accident. Bicyclists runs a red light and lands on your hood? "As a car driver you know that bicyclist rarely ever stop at red traffic lights and it's your duty to protect them from any harm." Official court ruling in the Netherlands.
this is not in every state. ive lived in california my whole life but got married to my husband who is new hampshire native, and they do this there. otherwise ive never seen it. may be just an east coast thing
Apparently, rolling coal is actually a thing.
It is. It is used to show how little you care for the environment and you do it by modifying your car engine so it produces massive amounts of black smoke. Apart from the environmental issue it's also dangerous and illegal because these clouds of black smoke are like a thick fog, blocking your view. Guys doing this rolling coal are usually aiming their practices on people driving eco-friendly cars and bicyclists.
It's also called Rolling Soot. There are places in the USA and Canada where you can be fined up to $5000 for modifying your truck to blow black smoke.
its modifying a diesel engine to make extra soot so when you hit the gas it spews out lots of black smoke.
