Nelson Host Santiago’s Journey From Comic Books To Urban Canvases

Nelson Host Santiago, a true New Yorker with deep Puerto Rican roots, stands as a prominent figure in the world of urban art. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Santiago’s journey in art began at a remarkably young age.

At just four years old, Nelson’s artistic talent was first sparked when he was introduced to comic books. The vibrant, larger-than-life figures depicted in the pages were captivating, setting the stage for a lifelong passion. With no formal training, he began drawing and painting, creating early works that were as bold and dynamic as the comic book images that first inspired him.

As Nelson grew, so did his artistic influences. The exploding hip-hop scene of his generation drew him into the world of graffiti. It was during this time that he adopted the name “Host One,” marking the beginning of his iconic art presence on the city streets. Over the next decade, Host One became a fixture in the graffiti scene, contributing striking pieces across various urban neighborhoods.

Nelson’s work, characterized by its vibrant colors and intricate designs, reflects both his artistic voice and his rich cultural tapestry. He has transformed “metropolitan canvases” into compelling works of expression, leaving an indelible mark. Nelson’s artwork addresses socioeconomic, political, and domestic violence issues within underrepresented communities and his Puerto Rican culture.

Today, Nelson balances the roles of both a dynamic exhibiting artist and an influential art instructor with work that not only enriches the art community but also motivates others to pursue their creative passions with confidence and dedication. Nelson continues to blend his early influences with the evolving art scene, and his contributions remain the cornerstone of his enduring passion and talent.

Hey there, Pandas! My name is Diana (though some prefer to refer to me as Diane, Deanna, and even Liana sometimes), and I am a Community Post Moderator Lead for Bored Panda. As my position title states, I am one of the people (employed Pandas for bamboo) over here who work with the community side of things on this website to ensure all is well, and while at that, I also help various creators and artists get recognition for the incredible work they do by connecting them to a large worldwide audience. Other than that, outside of work, you can find me brewing a nice cup of coffee, making a pizza from scratch, or baking brownies. I also love traveling, concerts, and cats (heavy on that, because I am a cat mom).
