Church Sparks Heated Reactions By Putting Jesus, Mary, Joseph In Separate Cages, Separated By The Border Patrol
The holidays are quickly approaching us with the smell of freshly-baked cookies, the malls are full of Christmas tunes, and we all know that it’s the season to spend time in the warm company of your family. However, not all people will have the luxury of spending time with their loved ones. Especially if they’re running for their lives.
Claremont United Methodist Church in California is making the headlines for its very unusual Nativity scene that depicts Jesus, Mary, and Joseph locked up in cages, as a family of asylum seekers separated at the border.
The reactions to the Nativity scene have been very different and society appears to be divided on the issue.

Some believe that it’s the perfect way to grab everyone’s attention about an important societal issue. Others think that it’s wrong to politicize Jesus and his family, and it’s a ‘cheap’ way to get attention and ‘attack’ the current United States government. A third group thinks that the metaphor doesn’t quite work because Jesus and his family were in a different situation than asylum seekers today.

While the Claremont United Methodist Church’s lead pastor, Reverend Karen Clark Ristine, doesn’t see this is as a political statement—she sees it as a theological one. With such a cacophony of different views and opinions being expressed, it’s no wonder the church is getting so much attention.
“We see this as, in some ways, the Holy Family standing in for the nameless families,” Reverend Karen Clark Ristine told the media. “We’ve heard of their plight; we’ve seen how these asylum seekers have been greeted and treated. We wanted the Holy Family to stand in for those nameless people because they also were refugees.”
“We don’t see it as political; we see it as theological. I’m getting responses from people I don’t know,” said the Reverend, who has been leading the church since July 2019. “I am having people tell me that it moved them to tears. So if the Holy Family and the imagery of the Holy Family and the imagery of a Nativity is something you hold dear, and you see them separated, then that’s going to spark compassion in many people.”

The Nativity scene is meant to show Jesus after he was born. However, the Claremont United Methodist Church is trying to make a metaphor about asylum seekers by alluding to Joseph and Mary’s flight to Egypt, to escape King Herod’s wrath.
The church does have a second, more traditional, Nativity scene inside the building itself. Claremont United Methodist Church often uses its Nativity scene to draw attention to important issues, such as Southern California’s homelessness crisis.

I must admit that I'm extremely happy about the f****d up wanna be christians in the comments being pissed.
Ana, in terms of "listing a couple" of ways that people of color are disenfranchised...I don't think I will. I'm a white woman and with that comes great privilege. My knowledge is strictly academic, but there are many people of color speaking from a visceral and real place about their experiences in this country. My job is to listen and try to deconstruct that in anyway I can, like engaging in these conversations. People are voicing their experiences in this country and the history backs it up. Your vehement defense and denial of it is where I'm asking you to level up. You're not disagreeing with me, your denying history and real peoples experiences. You're inadvertently supporting a structure that is harming people with your ignorance. I appreciate the conversation. All the best to you!
Load More Replies...Wow, some comments in the article and here in the comments section that indicate great ignorance around what Jesus did and stood for. You can't separate social justice from true Christianity and Jesus made everything political. If you say otherwise you need to read more.
I really have to question if these people actually read the article. I doubt it. They just saw the headline, then raced down to the comment section to start spewing venom. The article clearly explains the parallels between Jesus Mary and Joseph, and modern day refugees. It's pretty apt.
Load More Replies...I'm glad this church did this, it is inspiring a hard conversation that our country needs to have. Anyone who takes the time to look at the display might just think about the greater consequences of our actions. America wants to call itself a "Christian Nation" but a lot of Christians don't act according to Christ's words. I've long been repulsed by the general hypocrisy of Christians and find this church's actions to be heartwarming.
I don't want American to be a "christian nation." I don't want it to be a "Muslim nation" either. I would like it to be an enlightened nation. I'm an atheist, but that doesn't make me an evil person. I wish everyone could just get along, without religion.
Load More Replies...As an atheist I can get down with a lot of the positive messages that Christianity teaches even if I dont believe the literal interpretation. I get the meaning. It is so sad that many Christians especially American ones dont understand there own book and the teachings of their own lord. The so called Christians that condemn this are the exact ones that bring shame on all Christians, is Christianity indeed all religion supposed to be a bout love ,tolerance and forgiveness of all? yet they subvert their own religion for a twisted view. There is no difference between a hateful Christian who wishes death on another for their sexuality or a Muslim that conducts murderous acts in the name of the prophet. I know many religious people of all faiths and they are good people. Maybe the hateful ones need to look at themselves. And yes I an ready for death threats because weak people cant stand a view point they dont like but they just prove themselves to be weak.
This is what is happening in the world today. Should't hide it unless you are ashamed. If you are ashamed then don't let it happen! I used to be Catholic\ Christian. Everyone should be ashamed that people are being held in cages here in america! I am! Good for this church for pointing out the flaws of this pathetic government. People deserve to be treated decently and equally! Doesn't matter what religion you have or don't have. People are people. Not animals. We all need to treat people better. Thank you to the church for pointing it out.
I agree! And I'm an atheist! Religion can go to hell. Let's all love one another for crying out loud! Too much hate in this world now.
Load More Replies...Jesus' most important message for us was to love God and LOVE OTHERS. I'm thankful that I'm raised with Christians in my life that have vastly different political and religious opinions, but who all remember the most important calling: to love. Tearing apart families isn't love, simply put.
What would Jesus do? I think he would like it. Cuz it's about the message.
Oh, my goodness, God is ALL ABOUT justice for the poor and needy, the disenfranchised, the forgotten. That's the whole point of the Bible. It's the whole point of Jesus. He, the Son of God, came into the world not as a mighty god-warrior descending from heaven in all His might and glory. He chose to be born a baby, just like the rest of us, to a dirt-poor mother and father. He chose to enter into our poverty, our suffering, our hopelessness and bring us light. His message isn't just about this earth, not just about social justice, but you can't leave those aspects out of it. He came to save the souls of men and women and children, but He also cared about their physical needs -- as evidenced in his healing miracles, the feeding of 5,000 people on barely anything, etc. Those of my fellow/sister Christians who choose to separate the social justice from the gospel don't seem to have read the whole Bible, don't seem to take the whole thing in context.
...cont'd: You can't save people's souls if they're starving, sick, focused on the daily struggle of simply living. Jesus cares about the entirety of each human being's life and heart. Anyone who tells you anything else doesn't get it.
Load More Replies...Interesting that those who are offended by this are the same people that supported separating families.
Most Christian fundamentalists won't get the message. All they hear and see is dark people bad, white people good.
Even though Jesus was almost certainly darker skinned. And was a refugee himself. Hypocrites.
Load More Replies...This is a great idea! I see all the self righteous "Christians" can't see that Jesus helped everyone and you twist the stories from the Bible to meet your sick thoughts. You don't even want to believe Jesus wasn't a white man. Come on people.
As an atheist, this is the kind of Christian who made me want to be the best Christian I could (and in fact, I have attended that church a few times with my Grandmother and used to do Bible day camp there in the summer). The haters are the reason I'm an atheist. S****y people will always be s****y, and good people will always be good. Religion is just window dressing for the individual choices, and I see way too many 'christians' who are just s****y people to think there is any divinity in the word of their god.
I think we often miss the fine balance we fall into from good an evil. We always see evil as temptation, gluttony, selfishness but how often do we see our everyday struggles that are less noticeable of this struggle of power? How many of us only see the select few that come to our country with intentions of harm but ignore the poor and desperate? How many of us would scoff at making less when those others would be grateful for the hard labor that feeds and provides the simplest needs to their families? We enjoy luxury while others fall into suffering. We turn blind to others we see as beneath us, such like the innkeepers that refused Joseph and Mary. We despise those who are poor when they would open their home to us without question. For those who have little to nothing are humbled by the graces that are offered where we would laugh and demean them. We turn to the evil that tempts us to behave immorally to others yet we blind ourselves to kindness and humility God wants.
I agree with Dave Bryant, all comments are interesting, I feel it made the intended point !!!
Matthew Chapter 18, vs 5, "Whover welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me". I have changed a few hearts with this(paraphrased) verse. That is how you change a Christian's mind
Im a Christian who stood up and got into a shouting match w the preacher during his service over this issue.
Load More Replies...I have mixed feelings. I left the Catholic Church when I was 19 because the priest was saying that who doesn't vote for Mr. Orbán (who established a new dictatorship in Hungary during the past few years) is not a faithful Christian. I already had negative feelings towards the Church (not the religion), but this was more that I could handle. No politics in the church is acceptable by me. On the other hand this nativity scene is talking about a very important, originally truly Catholic principle: unconditional love and help, humanity. So I am confused a bit what to feel, but the main message is great. The hateful comments of the bigot "believers" always convince me how good was my choice of leaving institutionalized church. Be peaceful, be kind. It's the most simple rule to follow.
One person's reverent and thoughtful display is another person's blasphemy.
This image tells the story perfectly. It brings it to the heart. Brilliant.
I have to take issue with the writer above who sees the innkeeper as some sort of evil villain who wouldn't rent them a room. According to the story in the bible, the inn was already full and had no rooms. The innkeeper did the equivalent of telling them, we're full, but you're welcome to stay in my garage. After all, if we travel and find that the hotels are all fully booked, do we blame the manager for not having more rooms?
Byron McElfrish is a moron who has absolutely no clue as to the theology I'm sure he feels he is very familiar with. He is trying to spout the "old law" of the Old Testament while not realizing that when Jesus began preaching, he was bringing forth the "new law" of the New Testament. At that point the Old Testament was relegated to being a history rather than the law. Jesus never said one word about homosexuality. Not one.
Meher Baba said, "The only Real Existence is that of the One and Only God, who is the Infinite Self in every finite self." Since Jesus was God Incarnated, I don't see the problem with the presentation.
