Last year around this time my son happened to find a series of strange and related clues that eventually led to the digging up of buried treasure

The first thing he found was a piece to a map along with a few other strange items

The scrap of paper had some weird stuff on it, but wasn’t folded in any way. If I remember right we had to align it with something to figure out where to fold it. Below is what we saw when it was folded correctly

So under the steps he went

Under the steps was a box. Inside the box we found another part of the treasure map and some more clues

The sheet of paper below just had the letters without all circles in pencil

To figure out which letters to use we had to use one of the clues we found before

There were more clues in the bush in our front yard

One of them was this picture with holes in it

On the back was this weird mark. That’s when it dawned on us

We needed to use two of the other clues we got to find the message

Once we put the paper with letters on the back of the boat picture with holes… the swirly key told us what the correct alignment should look like

When we aligned the letters with the picture with the holes cut out using the key we found the location of the next set of clues

Eventually we found the full map

    Still more clues

    Working it out

My son was thrilled during the entire process

The scrap of paper said “The treasure is shining through the two swords” which meant placing the swords over the sun. Once we over-laid the key on top of the map

We found the location of the treasure!

Is was on the west side of the house. Here is my son digging up the treasure

Eventually I took over while he watched. This is how you react to treasure buried next to your house

One of my hobbies is planning treasure hunts. I planned this one for my children and it was a huge success

Haha my older sister used to do something really similar for me and my brother when we were little! It was in our room so in a much smaller scale but it was so so exciting and fun :). Its the kind of memories you never forget so it is wonderful that you're doing it for your kids - they will truly appreciate it!

Having a wonderful life with children and teaching them logic with fun and reward is the best learning method in these modern times.

What a terrific, challenging and creative gift for your son! More than anything, as a Grandparent, I value the time and energy that you put into creating such a wonderful experience for and with your boy. He's not going to forget that anytime soon. It's a memory for life -- great parenting!

I would have treasure hunts for my son who had ADD. The clues helped him pay attention to solve problems. Oh, it was fun for me as well!

It was a great thing to do for a kid. I just wish the article had been written that way. As it is, I was thinking some previous owner had done it to hide something. Good trick, but poorly presented.
