I had the privilege recently of photographing one of the most, if not the most, incredible and amazing cities in the world…New York City! New York and I have a long history. I spent the earliest years of my life there before my family moved to Florida when I was four years old. I actually have memories of that time. My Irish grandmother taking me to church to light candles, going to an authentic New York deli, memories of her apartment in Brooklyn. I even remember the not unpleasant smell of the old elevator in her building. As a family we spent a couple of weeks about every third summer or so visiting my cousins in New York and New Jersey. One of my older cousins used to take us into the city for an afternoon at some point during each visit. I remember whenever we would land at Newark Airport I always got a rush of excitement seeing the Manhattan skyline in the distance. The city does something to me.
As an adult I’ve only been to the city once or twice and even then it was only for a few hours and the last time I visited was way back in 1991. A few weeks ago I finally got the chance to spend some real time in New York City when a friend of mine (who used to live in the city) and I went up for a weekend visit. It was an amazing and hectic weekend and reignited my love affair with this amazing city. A city of survivors, a city of success, a city of culture, art and Broadway shows. My first Broadway show “Waitress” starring Tony winner Jessie Mueller who recently played Carole King in the award winning musical “beautiful” was one of many highlights of the trip. New York City truly is the melting pot of the world and there is no other city like it. I’m already looking forward to my next visit which I hope is sooner rather than later!
