“Heritage” was inspired by my Cuban heritage to connect with my roots; showing how I and my siblings navigate the world. Through florals, textiles, color, and mirrors I had created images that are loaded with symbolism.
The use of mirrors to skew my subject matter is intentional as it gives the viewers an altered perception of what is real and what isn’t. Much like how I navigate the world as a mixed woman. The overwhelming use of florals throughout this series is representational of the overwhelming traumas that come with Cuban Americans being displaced from their homeland and have never returned. With my siblings being my muses for self-portraiture I find that I’m interested in the relationship I have with my heritage through my siblings in order to have a more ‘clear’ understanding of self.
When I learned to recognize myself in other people I discovered that everyone became my mirror. I see myself reflected back at me through the eyes and actions of those I love most and those who I do not.
