Museum ‘Bans’ Cameras, Asks People To Sketch Artwork To Truly Appreciate It
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has come up with a brilliant new way to get people interested in their artwork. Though they haven’t banned cameras or phones, they are urging visitors to leave them at home and sketch the artwork at the museum instead!
“In today’s world of mobile phones and media a visit to a museum is often a passive and superficial experience,” they write on their website. “Visitors are easily distracted and do not truly experience beauty, magic and wonder. This is why the Rijksmuseum wants to help visitors discover and appreciate the beauty of art and history through drawing.”
The best part is that anyone can do it; “You don’t even have to be able to draw because this is not about the final result, but rather about looking at what you want to draw. When you do this, you begin to see things you never noticed before. You see proportions, details, lines… you get closer to the artist’s secret.” At their Big Draw event, which was held on the 24th and 25th of October, they even handed out sketch books and pencils to visitors who wanted to draw!

Share on FacebookYou should have sketched those people drawing rather than take a photo, sounds legit isn't?
Creative way for people to memorise what they've seen. A fun fact, when you attempt to sketch or draw your brain is literally on fire, on the off chance you're NOT a natural. Studies show that trying out tasks, which you seem to fail the most at tend to help you more. Not to mention that writing down or drawing (sketching) actually helps you memorise and helps you study few times easier compared to reading and simply viewing (browsing).
Our brain says, "Okay, it's a painting. Next?" Only if you sit down and sketch do you truly SEE what's in front of you.
Well, it's an incentative to make true "art lovers" to stay longer in the museum, and for some ; who want to capture the paintings - *a lot* longer, hopefully they've adjusted the opening hours :D
Great idea! The memories we've got are, nowadays, only photos on our phone or on out laptop. This creative way helps us cherish those moments so they could remainn forever in our always-stressed mind.
In USA it is considered a crime to make any copy in any way. When I had to make sketches for an art class I was told to look and then sneak outside to make my sketch.
My art teacher always said that it isn't in the hand or the materials that create art...it's in learning to see.
Sounds like a good idea but if they had to rely on my art work....too bad! I am not an artist by any means. RC
That is the most patronising thing I have ever heard of. Some of us wait a lifetime to travel to Europe to visit the art galleries and museums. And they don't want us to have something tangible to remember the beautiful artwork. Or is it a ploy to make us spend money in the giftshop buying postcards of the works?
why do you feel you have to buy postcards or take photos? Are your memories not enough?
