‘Beige’ Mom Shares She Repainted Her Toddler’s Christmas Tree, Gets Roasted In The Comments
The Christmas season is upon us, pandas! So if you celebrate, it’s time to decorate that tree and turn your home into a cozy, twinkling winter wonderland. There’s no question that Christmas is a bit more magical when you’re a kid, but that doesn’t mean adults shouldn’t get to embrace it too!
That’s why one mom recently decided that she would give her toddler’s tree a DIY makeover. But after sharing her tutorial online, viewers had a lot to say… Below, you’ll find the full video that Nattie Jo Powell posted on TikTok, as well as some of the replies viewers left.

“Go ahead and call me crazy or a sad beige mom for what I’m about to do. Today I’m giving the ‘Step 2 My First Christmas tree’ a total makeover. I’m leaning into my inner Pinterest mom with the vision to neutralize the tree, and I can already hear you thinking that I’m going to ruin my toddler’s Christmas by painting over these colors.
Let’s be real, my daughter’s favorite toys are brown cardboard boxes and clear plastic water bottles. So I really think that she’s a neutral girlie at heart.”

Nattie shared her step by step process of spray painting her daughter’s tree
“After taking a good long look at the tree I headed over to Lowe’s where I picked out all of our spray paint colors. Once I decided which colors of spray paint to use on each part, it was go time.”
“I originally wanted to paint the body of the tree brown, but then I realized, you know what, I want my tree to look a little bit alive. So here I am painting an already green tree another shade of green. It gave it a very realistic Christmas tree look which I love.”

“The gold was way less gold than what I was thinking for the star, but I actually kind of dig the brass antique look. For the tree skirt, I used this satin color paint. When it was time to paint the ornaments, I just took some painter’s tape and I covered the little ornament hooks with those. I wanted to keep those white. After a few hours when the paint dried, I was able to go in with a coat on the backside of the trees and all that was left to do was to let it sit and dry overnight.”

“It was almost time for the moment of truth and see how it all looked together. After putting on the star part of me wants to go back in and add some type of glitter or shine on it.

Here’s how the DIY ornaments turned out. Honestly, I love them, they’re definitely giving organic modern vibe. Might even go back into add some little velvet ribbon bows along the hooks.

Parents tend to go all out for their little ones during Christmas time
When I was a child, Christmas was by far the most magical day of the year. I loved all of the lights, the seasonal films, the delicious food, decorating the tree with my family and of course, the excitement of opening presents in my pajamas with my brothers. While I still love the holiday today, I have to admit that the day feels more like it should be for kiddos. And if you’re a parent, I’m sure the holiday has become all about your little ones.
According to the New York Post, 35% of American parents plan to spend between $50-$150 per child on Christmas gifts, and 19% say they’ll spend over $200 on each kid’s gifts. But it’s not all about presents. Many aspects of the holiday can be magical for little ones, including the tree.
If you’re a mom or dad who has to have a perfect tree and you can’t bear the idea of someone else decorating it, it might be wise to get your children their own tree to deck out however they like. Just keep in mind that if you’re providing them with a tree, it should be theirs. Some supervision is likely necessary when they hang up their ornaments, but allowing them creative control can be great for their imagination and artistic expression.

Learning and being exposed to colors is an important part of a child’s development
In responses to Nattie’s video on TikTok, many viewers pointed out the important role colors play in a child’s development. From about 5 months old, a baby’s color vision is well developed, so it’s recommended that they’re exposed to bright colors frequently from that point on. Utilizing colors can even help kids learn, as one 2018 study found that using colors can help kids understand new topics.
Colors are also linked to emotions, so the more children understand how to differentiate colors and how each makes them feel, the better they may be able to express themselves. For example, a young child may have a hard time using words to explain how they’re feeling, but if they draw a picture, the colors they use might help parents understand where they’re at.
According to childhood development expert Jody LeVos, PhD, learning colors can even help children develop their language skills. LeVos told The Bump that as babies age, they tend to have a preference for bright primary colors. “Toys and objects in these hues could be especially interesting for them (as opposed to more muted hues like pastels),” she explained. These colors are attention grabbing, and parents can teach their children the words for each color by pointing out that “the truck is blue” or that “their blue truck is the same color as their blue pillow,” for example.

While a neutral aesthetic at home isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it’s likely harmless for kids
As far as the comments that called Nattie a “sad beige mom” go, this term has recently popped up on the internet as neutral colors have become all the rage in home design and on social media. And while this trend might not be your cup of tea, Dr. Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, a psychologist and professor at the University of Delaware, told TODAY.com that it’s probably harmless.
“I don’t think children are going to be deprived,” Golinkoff says. “I just think the mothers should invest in Spray ‘n Wash. If your kid is wearing all beige, every stain shows up.” As long as kids still have the opportunity to explore colors through painting or creating art projects and are exposed to bright colors through the real world and in books, they likely aren’t going to have any problems.

This is a safety hazard. Baby toys are specially made so babies can suck or nibble at them. Spray paint is toxic to eat, and the color could also come off and get swallowed by baby. This "kidfluencer" isn't just making the tree ugly, she's also endangering her child

Yes!!! My kids decorate our tree every year. None of it coordinates, most are hand made ornaments. I even have hubby's hand made ornaments from the '80s! For years, we zip tied Bumble to the top of the tree as our topper. My youngest is currently obsessed with ALL things Christmas and drawing, so he draws every character from our fave Christmas movies and plasters them all over the house. This is their house, too.

As a 90s kid who was stuck with a wood panel room with cornflower blue and "dusty rose" pink with machine lace and weird teddy bear paintings and dolls and furniture i wasnt allowed to touch I feel so bad for this kid. Aesthetic moms are control freaks

If kid really is a "neutral girly" lets see a couple of preference tests. Sit her down on a play mat with two boxes of the same toys, one in bright colours, and one in neutrals, and record how much time she spends investigating/playing with each. A couple of 20min play sessions should give a pretty clear picture about what colour group holds her interest. Blur out the kid's face, or record her from behind to protect her privacy. Spoiler alert! Toy companies do comparison tests too, and there's a reason they produce colourful toys, instead of saving money on dyes and paints. If you want to be an aesthetic influencer, FFS give your kid a playroom that can be as colourful and messy as they want.

I'll take a guess that brown cardboard and clear plastic are rife in this house, therefore the kid associates them with Mom. I remember seeing a (possibly fake) story online of a beige mom who ditched the aesthetic after their kid exclusively used neutral crayons to colour things.

Right? I can't believe someone could make this thing even more boring. It's got what...four ornaments that you have to hang in exact places. I saw a video where a mom did a whole Christmas corner with her toddler and the set-up looked cute enough but it was right by a banister overlooking the living room. Hahaha, every one of those toys is getting thrown over/through the railing and the finale is the kid trying it.

I grew up with a mom like this and a tree like this. My friends always would say (enviously)- "your house looks like a museum" "your Christmas tree looks like a magazine". I hated every second. I preferred my friends' slightly chaotic, colorful, memorable households and especially their Christmas trees, with ornaments that kids had made over the years. Now that I have my own home and own tree, my Christmas decor is slightly "tacky" and I love everything about it. I lean into the joyful and colorful look gladly.

Ok... well that's what their job is and that's why you the kids PLAY with the toys to see if they like it. So boring. Kid is not going to be interested. Kids really need colours. I understand completely that what she did wasn't exactly colourless, but kids don't have much concept of all the advanced, variations of hues yet, nor are interested. All they know and care about is red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, pink, white, grey, brown and black. Having those contrasting colours makes it easier for them to distinguish and learn the basics of colours and which ones they like. This mom is really doing a disservice to her child. Not only that, she gave that tree to her daughter, so her daughter associates that tree as hers. With her mom swooping in to mess around with her toy, what's her daughter going to think about respecting others belongings?

I'll bet a box of Boston Cream doughnuts (my fave) that she won't allow loud Christmas music to be played while decorating, either. glossing over that silly typo, I completely agree with you! my favorite toys when I was a tot were cardboard boxes and laundry baskets because they could become anything: a boat, a house, a puppet show theater (I still have no idea how I made working pull curtains for that one) and these days, I'm a digital and fiber artist! cardboard boxes were an outlet for my creativity because I could imagine them as any color or space, though I didn't really need to because I actually lived in a house suited for children! well, who needs imagination when you have yummy yummy spray paint

That tree sucks anyway. Those ornaments fall off and roll everywhere if you even breathe in their direction. I finally had to get rid of it after my mother nearly broke her neck tripping on one. If they ever make a new version I hope they find a way to snap the ornaments in rather than have them precariously balanced on slippery plastic!

My parents and I have this tradition that I really love. Each year we take turns decorating the chrisas tree. My mom likes to make it pretty, while my dad and I like making it look funky and using all of the sentimental ornaments. So one year my mom will decorate it, and the next year me and my dad will decorate it. It's a nice compromise I think.

I liked 2 parts to this, the more realistic color of tree green and the additional diy ornaments. But the tree isn't made in that color, therefore either get an alternative (there are tons, this isn't the only "first" Christmas tree out there) or realize that kids things are going to be weird or bright colors.

The neutral colors may not be my cup of tea, but people need to back off. This doesn't make her a bad mom so drop it. There are kids getting abused by parents and you all choose to put all your effort on criticizing a mom who wants a toy to be neutral. I'm so sick of people telling other parents how to parent. Unless a child is actually being harmed then s**t up and focus on your own kids. Chances are they are going to be just as messed up as other kids because there is no perfect way to parent a child. Ugh.

I know most of you disagree but I like this one better. My mum was the exact oposite of this influencer - for her, everything had to be bright, patterned and vivid. And since I was a toddler I prefered more toned colours but nooo, everything had to be bright green, or yellow, or orange. I was soooo happy when finally she let me choose clothes/things I wanted to use! Is the kid happy? If so, there's no problem. And honest to god, 15 m.o. doesn't care about colours all that much.

Unpopular opinion, but I'm a bit different so here it goes... as an Autistic person, bright colors are often painful for me and very overstimulating. A more visually neutral environment likely would have benefited me growing up. I was often very overwhelmed with my environment. Like I said, I'm not the norm and this is probably not great for the majority of kids. Also, I'm hoping the spray paint is safe because kids tend to put everything in their mouths 🤷♀️

Holy cow, people in the article above are way overreacting. So a toddler can't enjoy something if it doesn't have bright colors? I call baloney. What I would be more concerned about is the safety of the paint that she put on there, since the little one is likely to put parts of it in their mouth. But there's nothing wrong with the aesthetic -- it's definitely got color, just a lot more natural. I'm sure the kid wouldn't care one way or the other. But people need something to be angry about, I guess.

Honestly I think it was just done for a video. I doubt the kid will even get a chance to touch it even if she wanted too. Still the way people some people are going beyond roasting to mean is much worse. I was skeptical but it actually came out kind of cute . Although I do agree with her that it needs some better gold & some glitter. Buuutt unless it's non toxic eco glitter again don't give it to the kid. I could support this a few years down the road once the kid is out of everything in their mouth stage. So say 20 or so.😉

Right? I can't believe someone could make this thing even more boring. It's got what...four ornaments that you have to hang in exact places. I saw a video where a mom did a whole Christmas corner with her toddler and the set-up looked cute enough but it was right by a banister overlooking the living room. Hahaha, every one of those toys is getting thrown over/through the railing and the finale is the kid trying it.

I just don't understand. Why have a plastic tree for a toddler if you are just going to repaint it in a way that could be hazardous the moment the kid does what toddlers do and want to play with it.

I grew up with a mom like this and a tree like this. My friends always would say (enviously)- "your house looks like a museum" "your Christmas tree looks like a magazine". I hated every second. I preferred my friends' slightly chaotic, colorful, memorable households and especially their Christmas trees, with ornaments that kids had made over the years. Now that I have my own home and own tree, my Christmas decor is slightly "tacky" and I love everything about it. I lean into the joyful and colorful look gladly.

Does she really think she knows better than the children's research development teams at these toy companies? She claims "for now my daughter doesn't know or voice what she likes." Ok... well that's what their job is and that's why you the kids PLAY with the toys to see if they like it. So boring. Kid is not going to be interested. Funny she never showed her playing with it...baby is probably in a spray paint coma and will start huffing at age 7.

Kids really need colours. I understand completely that what she did wasn't exactly colourless, but kids don't have much concept of all the advanced, variations of hues yet, nor are interested. All they know and care about is red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, pink, white, grey, brown and black. Having those contrasting colours makes it easier for them to distinguish and learn the basics of colours and which ones they like. This mom is really doing a disservice to her child. Not only that, she gave that tree to her daughter, so her daughter associates that tree as hers. With her mom swooping in to mess around with her toy, what's her daughter going to think about respecting others belongings?

I'll bet a box of Boston Cream doughnuts (my fave) that she won't allow loud Christmas music to be played while decorating, either. That child will grow up in a "Don't bother me now, kid, mommy is busy talking to her followers. THEY are important," household. When your IG or TT audience are your 'family' and important people, while your kids and spouse are practically just your roommates, you deserve a kick in the head.

glossing over that silly typo, I completely agree with you! my favorite toys when I was a tot were cardboard boxes and laundry baskets because they could become anything: a boat, a house, a puppet show theater (I still have no idea how I made working pull curtains for that one) and these days, I'm a digital and fiber artist! cardboard boxes were an outlet for my creativity because I could imagine them as any color or space, though I didn't really need to because I actually lived in a house suited for children! well, who needs imagination when you have yummy yummy spray paint

speaking as someone that currently has a beige bedroom (it's a calming color, good for when my chronic pain/illness flares up) if you'd asked little me what color I'd want to paint that dinky little christmas tree, I probably would've said "hot pink!" or "rainbow!" because I was a child and children love color

That tree sucks anyway. Those ornaments fall off and roll everywhere if you even breathe in their direction. I finally had to get rid of it after my mother nearly broke her neck tripping on one. If they ever make a new version I hope they find a way to snap the ornaments in rather than have them precariously balanced on slippery plastic!

My parents and I have this tradition that I really love. Each year we take turns decorating the chrisas tree. My mom likes to make it pretty, while my dad and I like making it look funky and using all of the sentimental ornaments. So one year my mom will decorate it, and the next year me and my dad will decorate it. It's a nice compromise I think.

I liked 2 parts to this, the more realistic color of tree green and the additional diy ornaments. But the tree isn't made in that color, therefore either get an alternative (there are tons, this isn't the only "first" Christmas tree out there) or realize that kids things are going to be weird or bright colors.

The neutral colors may not be my cup of tea, but people need to back off. This doesn't make her a bad mom so drop it. There are kids getting abused by parents and you all choose to put all your effort on criticizing a mom who wants a toy to be neutral. I'm so sick of people telling other parents how to parent. Unless a child is actually being harmed then s**t up and focus on your own kids. Chances are they are going to be just as messed up as other kids because there is no perfect way to parent a child. I know most of you disagree but I like this one better. My mum was the exact oposite of this influencer - for her, everything had to be bright, patterned and vivid. And since I was a toddler I prefered more toned colours but nooo, everything had to be bright green, or yellow, or orange. I was soooo happy when finally she let me choose clothes/things I wanted to use! Is the kid happy? If so, there's no problem. And honest to god, 15 m.o. doesn't care about colours all that much.

Unpopular opinion, but I'm a bit different so here it goes... as an Autistic person, bright colors are often painful for me and very overstimulating. A more visually neutral environment likely would have benefited me growing up. I was often very overwhelmed with my environment. Like I said, I'm not the norm and this is probably not great for the majority of kids. Also, I'm hoping the spray paint is safe because kids tend to put everything in their mouths 🤷♀️

Holy cow, people in the article above are way overreacting. So a toddler can't enjoy something if it doesn't have bright colors? I call baloney. What I would be more concerned about is the safety of the paint that she put on there, since the little one is likely to put parts of it in their mouth. But there's nothing wrong with the aesthetic -- it's definitely got color, just a lot more natural. I'm sure the kid wouldn't care one way or the other. But people need something to be angry about, I guess.

Honestly I think it was just done for a video. I doubt the kid will even get a chance to touch it even if she wanted too. Still the way people some people are going beyond roasting to mean is much worse. I was skeptical but it actually came out kind of cute . Although I do agree with her that it needs some better gold & some glitter. Buuutt unless it's non toxic eco glitter again don't give it to the kid. I could support this a few years down the road once the kid is out of everything in their mouth stage. So say 20 or so.😉
