It's quite exquisite; I guess people don't like seeing something as traditional as a tree replaced by a mere conical artwork. I agree, but I'd rather see this than a tree completely obscured by a rigid cone of lights.

This is an over 200-year-old fir cut down in Trento in spite of a protest carried out to save it + a petition to the Pope signed by over 50 thousands of people. People were asking the Pope not to agree to this glorious tree being cut down but he ignored them. They also proposed a great (imo) alternative: an artistic tree created from the trees fallen during last months/weeks of hurricanes/gales/storms. To no avail.

The snide comments towards the tree in Trafaglar Square annoys me. It's a gift from Norway to the UK for the help in WWII. People clearly have no idea how much effort is involved in chopping down and transporting a tree that size from Norway to the UK on a boat. It's a real tree from a real forest that's taken decades to grow to that size (the one being used this year is 57 years old) and it's meant to look like that. The lights are draped vertically in the traditional Norwegian style. But yeah, let's make fun of the tree and call it 'sad' because it doesn't look like the farmed, mass produced trees you see everywhere else.
